Second Point Guard Battle Royal Sunday

Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, Johnny Flynn, Tony Douglas, Nick Calathes, and Patty Mills.

Thoughts?

From reports earlier this week, seems Evans & Flynn should be top two. Will be nice to see how they do against each other. Curry seems more a shooting PG or 2-guard, Calathes has agreed to play in Greece I think but might be good draft at 31 and let him work there a year or so. Mills is borderline 1st round and more likely second round. Will anxiously await feedback sunday.

I'm not big on Tony Douglas, but it generally looks like a good group. I hope they'll focus on stuff that shows what those guys would be like as PGs, that'd be a lot more useful than seeing how they do at taking uncontested shots.

From my best understanding, Tony is a good defender. I think having him in the group is good so we can see how some of these guys do offensively against a defensive specialist.

It's not just about the 4th pick, Gary. We've got the 23 and the 31 to think about and it would be silly not to see guys just because they're not lottery caliber.

Yah.. I was meaning the 4th for guys like Curry, and Evans.. Flynn MAYBE, but he's still kind of iffy in my books.

I wouldn't mind giving Calathes a chance if he doesn't go overseas with the 31st pick.

Slight revision to the pre-draft workouts schedule:

Jonny Flynn has been added to tomorrow’s pre-Draft workout at the Kings practice facility, joining Stephen Curry, Toney Douglas, Tyreke Evans, Nick Calathes, and Courtney Fells. This will be the second visit for Flynn, Evans, and Calathes.

On Monday, the previously-announced Sam Young will be joined by Patty Mills, Derrick Brown, Ryan Toolson, Gordon Watt, and Lawrence Hill. This will be Brown’s second visit to Sacramento.

I like Douglas. I don't think anybody likes him at #4, but the latter part of the first round, or better yet, the first pick of the 2nd round, you bet.

Douglas was co-defensive player of the year in his conference. He also can shoot the ball. I'd really like to see go up against Curry. Wouldn't surprise me if he outshined him.

He sounds intriguing. Does he have any ability to penetrate or finish at the rim. I'm guessing not too much or we would be talking about him earlier in the first round. However, could be a worthwhile gamble late. We could use a feisty defensive minded point guard. Although, if we do draft a PG early, I would not be surprised to see Petrie snag Heytvelt with 31.

Douglas is a shooting guard and I don't think he's athletic enough to be as good of a defender at the NBA level. Would rather have Beaubois.

I'm curious why you don't think he's a good athlete. Even at the combine he scored well in the lateral quickness drills and the speed drills. His vertical was the only thing that was average at best for a small man. He was a very good defender in college. My only problem with him is that I don't think he's a point guard, which leaves him a tad small for the shooting guard position. Which is why he's not ranked higher. I could see him as a Bobby Jackson type player off the bench. Someone to change the pace a little and defend.

However, I think the Kings have greater needs before that luxury.

which is why im against drafting him..

we need a point guard a flat out good point guard not another scorer who wont pass the ball

why do people think Curry wont pass. I dont get it. He averaged 5.6 assists per game with no help at all, take a look at some of the other top point guards in this draft with better teams and see how they passed the ball ..

Holiday - 3.7 assists
Flynn - 6.7
Evans - 3.9
Jennings - 2.3
Rubio ( ACB ) - 6.1

Only Flynn and Rubio had better assist numbers.

Part of it is that those numbers are misleading. Curry used such a incredibly high number of possessions for his team that his numbers were inflated. Even players like Marbury put up solid assist numbers, but that doesn't mean they are setting up their teammates or are playing like a pure point guard. It just means they dominate the ball and of course some of their passes will turn into assists.

Now I don't think Curry is a ball hog like Marbury, but I agree he will never be a pure PG.

There is a difference between someone who has the ability to pass, and someone who is a natural playmaker. I think Curry has the ability to pass, especially when getting triple-teamed at davidson. He often had no choice. It was either pass or force up another shot over 2 or 3 defenders. But personally, I don't think he is a natural playmaker, which would be more of what this team needs. I would rather see Flynn or Rubio running our fastbreak instead of Curry.

Exactly.. Look at Iverson.. Even HE said he wasn't a PG, but he still averages 7 assists? Why? Because he ALWAYS has the ball!!!

You can't really look at the assist numbers for guys that average almost 30ppg because odds are those assists are because they couldn't find a shot for themselves and got a bailout bucket from a teammate.

The counter argument then is that he had ALL the defensive attention and STILL managed to pull out 6 assists a game. Curry is going to be a solid player.

That argument actually proves the opposite point you're trying to make. If he has all the defensive attention (ie a double team and guys sagging off their own men) then it stands to reason that someone is wide open. Getting the ball to that guy shows that he can be a passer when he needs to, but it hardly proves that he can be a playmaker.

Bailout buckets. I can say with almost 100% certainty that 3 of those assists on average per game was Curry passing because he had nothing for himself and it was a catch and shoot from who he passed to.

I don't mind taking a #1 shooter on a team, but nobody in this draft are capable of carrying an NBA team as the #1 option. Because of that a bunch of red flags go off in my head when I see guys like Curry, Teague, or Evans.
