[Grades] Grades v. Spurs 10/27/2016

If Kawhi Leonard were hurt and had to miss the series, could we beat the Spurs in a 7 game series?

It took him 77 possessions to get those 81 points. And they needed every one of those. Thunder have Kyle Freaking Singler as a starter (Rudy is very much looking forward to playing OKC after years of hopeless trying to keep up with KD), and 3 rookies logged 60 minutes over 2 games.
Westy will have to be at an undisputed MVP-level for Thunder to earn middle seed.

That's not the point I'm trying to make here. Gay and Cousins just does not work long term or in the present IMO.

You could be right, but its too early to tell under Joerger's system. Both are isolation players, but Cuz is capable of being more, so, with some time to jell, it might work. But I agree on paper, its not a match made in heaven.

Never once has Afflalo been labeled as a "competent" scorer IMO. He is a defensive role player, or at least was coming into the league, that worked on his game and can give you points in spurts but nothing consistent. If Afflalo is supposed to be that guy, we will continue to see the scoring drought such as we have last night, versus the Spurs or not.

I think when you say that Afflalo has never been labeled a competent scorer, I think your being a bit unrealistic. Just what is a competent scorer to you. Has he been a star? No, of course not, but over his career he's been more competent than just about anyone that's played the SG position for the Kings over the last ten years. The last so called competent scorer the Kings had at that position was probably Kevin Martin, and one could argue that Afflalo is a better all around player than Martin. Martin being the better scorer of course.

For his career Afflalo has shot 45.1% overall from the field and 38.5% from the three. Those are very solid stats by anyone's standard. During a six year stretch from 2009 to 2014 he averaged 46.1% overall, and 39.7% from the three. Throughout his career, when he wasn't expected to carry a large part of the scoring load, he's been very competent. So I think that if you look at him as a solid role player, who on occasion can step up and put some points up, there's no problem. If you look at him to be the second coming of Mitch Richmond, then you have a problem.

Preach. Too many of us around here want to get giddy because the Kings are finally committing to defense. That's dandy and all but let's wait a whole season and further evaluate if this team can sustain it through out 82 games and not just the first month or two of the season.

Just what exactly is the point of this post? Do you think we don't know that two games doesn't make a season? This isn't our first rodeo as they say. Were all aware that everything could fall apart and the season could become a disaster. For the first time in a while, the Kings have looked like a well coached team, and you want us to stay depressed and lower our expectations. Why? What's wrong with enjoying the moment?

In my life, I do my best to live in the moment and enjoy it for what it's worth. The past is done and over with, and with the exception of god, no one knows what the future holds. So to my old eyes, the present looks pretty good right now. After tonight, it might not, but until then, Yi Pi!

I think our troubles to score against the Spurs in that 3rd quarter is not really a huge concern because

a) We are not going to play the Spurs every night
b) Rudy won't we up against a defensive stud like Leonard
c) With Collison back that is one extra player we have that can score
d) Players just missed a bunch of wide open shots that they would normally hit

Really, if we play the rest of the season with this sort of intensity at the defensive end, ball sharing and movement on the offense we will be fine. Aginst the Spurs, out of every timeout we hada great set play that we converted on. Good coach. akes the world of difference. Last year we are losing that game by 30 easily.

I would add to you list, that the Kings are learning a new offensive system, and it's been stated that Joerger has only installed one fourth of his offense so far. Plus, it takes time for a team with that many new players to jell and get used to playing with one another.

I am glad this was pointed out Bajaden.
Joerger said the Kings have only about one-quarter to one-third of their offense installed, so he expects them to get “frantic” at times and make mistakes.

The most important thing Joerger wants from the Kings on offense: “Limit the turnovers.”

What he fears is the team allowing offensive trouble to affect its defense. That’s what happened last Tuesday in the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Clippers.

When I say "competent" scorer...I am referring to consistently being able to give you points and being able to make difficult shots when the team struggles to score as a whole. I don't see that in him, we should not be expecting that much out of him anyway. He is the third option I suppose on this team, that's not exactly ideal but it's better than anything else left on the roster until Darren comes back, then I think Afflalo can fit in that 4th option role perfectly.

On this we agree! I might add, that what you describe as competent, is a player that is an upper tier player. I don't think anyone looks at Afflalo as that kind of player, nor expects him to be. So far, he's been everything I expected. His shot has been a little off, but that happens with shooters. I put more emphasis on his overall play.

Many posters on KingsFans.com have a tendency to conflate negativity and "realism."

And I ought to know; we can smell our own.
