[Grades] Grades v. Spurs 10/27/2016

If Kawhi Leonard were hurt and had to miss the series, could we beat the Spurs in a 7 game series?

Why are people harping on Kofous? The Cousins/Kofous tandem bullied the hell out of Aldridge/Gasol. So much in fact that Gasol only played 21 minutes and never even got back in the game in the 4th quarter because Pop knew we we're bullying them with our two bigs. I don't care if Kofous missed a flip or two, he chased away one of the best big men in the league.

Afflalo did a good job keep Anderson invisible all game. Ginobili and Mills were both inefficient as well.

Gay may have shot 30% but he still scored 17 on 10 shots thanks to his aggressiveness in getting to the line and almost fouling Kawhi out.

Cousins was just a straight up MVP candidate this game. I don't ever want to hear another trade rumor about him again. The guy lays it out there on the line for this city and is loyal as ****.

Sadly, the game was lost by the bench. If you look at the +/- for the game. Their bench destroyed our bench.

One of the coolest moments of the game was when Patty Mills tried that crossover and Temple jumped right in front of him and stopped him in his tracks. Got Cousins off his seat. Got Joerger off his seat clapping and it got a smart basketball crowd up on their feet and cheering. The fans appreciate it because that's not god given talent, that's just pure effort. Something we haven't seen for years. I have a feeling this team is going to take on a bring your lunch pail to work, blue collar type mentality this year. I just hope the effort lasts and they don't give up if they stumble across a losing streak.

"Bring your lunch pail to work" I like it:) The Construction Worker singing the national anthem with his twin sons at his feet was nice touch.

GO KINGS, BEAT THE THIBIDEAUS!!!!!

He did throw that ball absentmindedly back court vs the Suns - it was pretty bonehead and maybe it got him a day in the doghouse?

Then Ben sits Saturday IMO. Showing the ball to the best Ballhawk in the Association and then giving him a weak foul for an and one is not good. Doing it twice in a row??? That turned the game around for the Spurs.

Ben had 10 pts in 10 minutes of play. Turned the ball over to the best wing defender in the game. Net positive. The problem is that we scored 37 points in the second half. The Spurs just shut the Kings down across the board. Kings are improved, but obviously not on the Spurs level. Spurs decided they were going to win at all costs and the Kings didn't have the fire power to deal with it. (Neither did the Warriors)

The Spurs signed Dedmon in July of this year as a FA. This is the Spurs. They find the gems off the FA wire that outplay other teams' lottery picks. Here's the stat line for Dedmon

245-60-02-243700404+2112

That's 7 rebounds, 4 blocked shots, 5 of 6 from the field, and +21 in 24 minutes for Dedmon. WCS had 0 rebs, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks. That D+ grade is generous.

As for the game, the Spurs have Leonard, the Kings don't. The end. Good coaching by Joerger though.

How on earth do you read that?

One of the best moments I've seen when I saw Joerger and DMC get up like that I damn near got up at home too.

Towards the end the spurs figured out that they just needed to crowd up the paint as usual against us and locked us down. Teams will take that and really dare us to shoot and hit more 3s Barnes/Afflalo/Casspi along with the others MUST make other teams pay or our offense will stall like it did last night. Having Lawson not be a 3PT threat hurts us alot as well, Collison may have a slow release but at the very least his 3PT must be respected. Cuz and Gay just need to realize when the other teams are on to them dominating the paint and sending doubles to swing the ball quickly and decisively, the ball got stuck a little too much last night. Overall we played well for a work in progress and this is before we have really come together as a team.

As mentioned in the game thread Ben is finally being setup properly(Catch and Shoot situations and NOT any dribble drive situations.) Hopefully he builds on that and can expand this little role the coach has carved out for him. Excellent coaching to make use of his talent.

WCS has looked lost out there and at times seems to avoid the ball(good teams notice that and take advantage) he needs to work on his awareness/hands and stop relying on his amazing physical tools to bail him out everytime. Great job by coach in getting the ball into his hands and forcing him to work on awareness and passing from the high post. Oh and hit the weight room, he looks skinnier than last year.

Another thing we haven't talked much about is Lawson's defense. The guy can play defense. He came in here known as a weak defender but I see a guy who hasn't been coached to play defense in the past. He played under Karl for quite a while in Denver and we know how much emphasis Karl puts on defense. Lawson probably couldn't play defense in Denver because he was constantly being switched into big mismatches.

Remember last year when nearly every possession had Rondo switching onto the opposing teams PF or C? I only saw us get caught on bad switches a handful of times last night. Used to be every other time down the court. Goes a long way toward not giving up easy buckets.

My two big takeaways from this game were that Kawhi Leonard is a pretty good basketball player and that guys like playing for Dave Joeger. I really enjoyed watching him coach the game last night. I think we may lack offensive firepower but I imagine the offense will improve with more time and work together. Really liked how they fought at the end when the Spurs clamped down. A lot of fight and a lot of confidence. Boogie is a freak and with a little bit of offensive help and this team may scare some people.

Looking at the team as a whole after the start so far I'm fairly optimistic right now. A good coach, franchise player, solid vets, and a slew of young guys with potential have me hopeful.

It was mentioned during the Kings vs Suns broadcast the Coach Joerger stated he only has 1/4 of the offensive game plan in at this point. I can live with that because the defense is much improved:)

It's 11:20 AM and I haven't read anyone's comments about the game - not on here or TV or the Bee or Amy where.

A few observations. We played good defense in the first half while we were in it.

The Spurs played good defense in the first half and then tightened it up in the second.

We mostly stayed with game in the first half and when their defense tightened up in the second we methodically began to lose our cool and our game. Those that should have led bringing us out of that - Joerger and Cousins - did not. In fact it seemed Cousins led the into the worst of last year's play. He went ne-on-one, so did others, no one moved, they played like they were afraid to pass or move.

An aside: we might have made a better showing of dealing with adversity if we had Collison and not McLemore. But maybe not.

I was pleased that we showed ou good stuff, on offense and defense, before the Spurs forced us to fold our tent. Onward and upward. I'll be there Saturday for my first game and am looking forward to it.

I find the whole "Rudy sucks because he had a bad night against the best defender in the league" argument puzzling.

I think Rudy sucks because he sucks. Has nothing to do with last night . His ball handling is atrocious and he's a ball stopper on offense. He's all hollow stats.

If there are any 2 people that kept us in this game, those 2 are it, and yet you have them as the reason for us losing? Our bench lost us this game in the 3rd quarter. I can't say I agree with your assessment at all.

Also, in the first half, we weren't just "in it" as you say, we were winning the entire time. They made a run and we made a run right back. We were up by 7-9 points on more than several occasions. Experience doomed us. We lack it and they have it in spades.

There you have it. Collison's return should help as well. It will frustrate me to no end to wait patiently for them to get it going but like you I'll enjoy the defense while we wait.

There is no shame is losing to a top 3 team, who just beat the Warriors by 29 points at Golden State 2 days earlier.

The Kings hung tough and did not sulk their heads during the game. You can tell that the players believe in this team.

If Coach Joeger can get the Kings to win the games they should win, we will be close to .500 all season with a good chance to make the playoffs. :)

Two games so far and in both he seems to be more settled and playing to his strengths. I too can see the coaching and getting him into positions where he can succeed happening already. He still struggled a bit in both games at times but when I recalibrate my expectations of what I expect from a roll player he doesn't feel nearly as far off as he used to be. If Joerger helps Ben put more games together like these he will be a serviceable bench player and I imagine many teams will be willing to take a chance with him on his next contract. I don't know how much that will help the Kings but as someone who likes Ben it feels good to think a little bit of success with be coming his way after a tumultuous run with the Kings.

I enjoyed this but someone close to him should have advised him not to go for it on that high note at the end.

Certainly everyone has already read this quote in today's Bee, however, I just thought it was worth repeating:

“Coach Joerger’s . . . got them playing defense after one game already the way they played defense in Memphis,” Popovich said. “That’s because he knows what he’s doing, and it’s a tribute to those guys to pick that up and jump in and buy in all of a sudden.”

Go Joerger and Go Kings!

That's crazy cause the offense isn't that bad our ball movement is pretty good.

As for the opening of the building, it went off without a hitch. Both David Stern and Adam Silver were in attendance to see the event. As was Oklahoma City Thunder owner Clay Bennett, former Sacramento Kings All-Star Chris Webber, mayor Kevin Johnson and a bevy of local celebrities.
