still feel we should have given one scotty brooks a chance, hes taken a young team much like ours, the thunder and has got them playing much much better then under PJ. He saw the problems there before coming in and he saw the problems here under muss but was never given a chance.

Hindsight is 100% and all that. At the time I was against Brooks because he too was inexperienced, and the only head assistant job he had ever had had been 1 yr for Muss, which isn't exactly a recommendation. Also felt he may have been rather slimily backstabbing Muss by buttering up Geoff in his off hours, and there may in fact be a similar knife still sticking out of PJ's back. He's proven he can coach though, so looking back on it, yeah that would have been better. Of course back when I was against Brooks I never really imagined we'd run off gambling on a out of nowhere Reggie Theus either.

I have changed my signature. As down as I've been on Petrie lately, we may need to keep him just to keep the Maloof dumbness in check.

The Maloofs have taken a lot of hits over the years and some of them were deserved. In this instance, however, I have to strongly suspect the validity of this rumor, especially since Amick was so vague about his "source" ...

I'd like to see someone challenge Amick to substantiate his allegations, which I really have to suspect were more of an attempt to rile up the fan base - something the Bee has done for years - on an off-hand comment or something similar and not a legitimate piece of information.

I'm pretty happy with the direction the Maloofs are going at this point in time. I actually wonder at times if Amick is trying to fill the void left at the Bee when R.E. Graswich departed.

It's not a good thing. Oh brother I don't know. Nobody's trying to take anybody's head off here. Let's get that straight.

I think that this a great theory - especially given that I was kind of thinking the same thing. ;) I take anything written in the Bee with a grain of salt.

Who cares, we're a lottery team for 3 years even if we got Red Auerbach. As long as the new coach doesn't drive drunk or brawl with fans, we could just as well insert a cardboard cutout next to the bench.

i think this is quite wrong...

with the potential #1 pick in the draft this offseason, and with a rather young team already, the kings are in need of a head coach and coaching staff who are able to teach the game of NBA basketball and properly manage an NBA locker room. a losing mentality is difficult enough to manage in the nba, and young teams often never fully realize their potential because they never find the confidence necessary to do so...

our own kevin martin is an outstanding example of the strange mental phenomenon that occurs for many players in the nba. in his first couple of seasons he showed promise as an offensive talent, but his confidence was shaky, at best. so often he looked completely lost on both sides of the ball. then, under the tutelage of rick adelman and his coaching staff, things started to click for kevin in his breakout season. he's completely unrecognizable from the scared, uncertain player the kings drafted. while his game still lacks a whole lotta depth, its impossible not to appreciate the value the kings are getting from a #26 pick...

some players don't have the physical tools to cut it in the nba (shelden williams, quincy douby, etc), but most just lack the mental composure to put it all together. a good teacher of the game who can keep a lottery-bound locker room together is VERY important to this kings team going forward, especially when seeing the talent of players like spencer hawes and justin thompson. it'd be a damn shame if terrible coaches like kenny natt continued to stunt (or potentially ruin) the potential of our young guys...

I completely disagree. Next year we wont make the playoffs, but I could see us challenging for a spot the following year. We have too much young talent on this team not to improve. Unless we have major injuries next year, or hire an idiot like Whisenant, this team will show considerable improvement next year. With the added flexibilty of the salaries we have dumped, we are only going to add more young, talented players. We need an experienced coach to come in here and really teach the young guys how to win and play the game the right way. It is a proccess, but a good coach can really help speed it along.

I think if we're going to hire any coach.. its got to be a coach that will be able to develop talent and not necessary a coach who could win a lot of games. I'm pretty positive we won't win many games next season with any coach anyways.

Well, that all depends on what we do in the offseason. You bring in 2 first round picks, a high value free agent/or high value player via trade, PLUS a new coaching staff, and you never know what can happen. I'd like to think that after all of this that we would be better that a 15 win team like we have now.

Because he didn't win a championship. Of course now that just making the playoffs would be cause for celebration, the Adelman firing is put into proper perspective.

Well, whoever comes in has to develop talent to win..

Spencer, JT, 2 picks, Greene... I mean the first 4 are basically your nucleus excluding Martin, Cisco and Noc.

Next year, there will be no Brads, Mikkis, or Salmons clogging up the minutes.

I don't dispute we're getting great value for that pick, but my memory is that Martin's breakout season came with Musselman. despite showing flashes of scoring talent the previous year, mainly as a spot up shooter. And I think it's generally accepted around here that Musselman was an inferior coach to Adelman.

Our team was too awful this year not to improve.

3 years is speculation, but this franchise lacks a franchise player. We've bowed out of the 2010 free agent extravaganza; and while I'm not particularly well informed about draft prospects this year, excitement does seem to be much lower than usual, (ie. no Lebron II.)

I think we sign a good young free agent point guard this summer, draft a project, improve to 30 wins next year, miss out on a franchise caliber player in the draft, improve to 35 wins the next year, and stagnate as our young players run out their rookie contracts and become free agents.

The main reason why the Kings got where they are was not coaching incompetence but talent drain. It will take years to rebuild that talent base, and we really just got started this year.

Forgive me because i haven't read this entire thread, but why not hire Avery Johnson?
Avery Johnson has been talked about as a possibilty for a while. Personally, he would be at the top of my list, follewed by Tom T. in boston. If he commited to 3 or more years, and was willing to work through the rebuilding process, I think he could really change the culture and attitude of the team. Thats something you want to do while players are young, so they don't accept losing and build too many bad habits.

I think it's pretty clear that the Maloofs want a defensive oriented coach. That is why they even consider Wiz in the first place, afterall he did make the Monarchs one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA. Whether that would translate to the Kings i'm not so sure. Most people don't seem to think so. I believe to have a good defensive team you will need defensive players though. Just having a defensive oriented coach may not be the total solution to our defensive flaws. This is where the draft comes in where we could get some defensive players along with a defensive oriented coach to change the whole culture of the team. :)

Well said. Just the turnover in coaches is enough to make a player a cynic and look out for himself rather than the team. We need stability and we need an excellent coach for next year.

First of all, the Kings did not "fire" Adelman. Tthey did not extend his contract when it was to expire. The team was going no where but down at the time and there was nothing Adelman could do especially with the volatile Artest. I believe it was time for him to move on and I think he saw the rebuild coming. If you remember he did take a year off before the Houston gig where they have a core of veterans who play well under his style.

As to Whisnet (sp?) hard to say. The job is to bring a bunch of talented kids along and up into the NBA style of play. Then to get them and others to play defense. Once the "big kids" start to play D in the middle, the Kings will make a major step up in the standings, Donte Greene notwithstanding.

Can Whis do a better job in that situation? IF, and it's a big if, he has a veteran NBA ex-head coach on his staff, then he can probably get the Kings to the next level. But with a staff like Natt's (no head coaching experience and not much assistant time either) they are missing a big learning element.

Coachie can be there but his contribution, tho' valuable, is limited to some key individuals and trying to instill a "pass first philosophy".

Bring in a big name NBA coach? Not unless he has dealt with a bunch of talented kids and taken them to the playoffs. Don't know who that might be.
