And the next pick goes too.....

Silence of the Lambs [1991]

Anthony Hopkins scared the crap out of me when I was younger with his performance in this movie. Ok, I admit, He still does.

great great flick, and might even possibly have earned a place on my isalnd eventually. But bdouble's island remains the gloomiest tropical paradise in town. We could probably spot your island by the rain cloud perpetually overhead. :p

Seriously....I will need a whole new top 10 at this rate...man...

I wasn't young when this movie came out, and by extension I'm not young now...and Hopkins STILL scares the crap out of me in this movie - won't watch it in the dark. And damnit....I find myself saying CLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARIIIIIIISE all creep like he does just for the hell of it....:)

Firstly, YAY!! YAY!! YIPPEE!! WAHOO!!!

Secondly, I must admit that I'm somewhat disgusted in myself to give my first two picks to the same director/lead actor combo because it makes me look like even more of a dorky fangirl than I really am... but the happy dance inspired by getting both of these movies makes it all feel better. My second pick:

Fight Club (1999) -- This movie is such a twisted little mind**** that I sometimes feel like it was made specially for me. Sarcastic, nihilistic, anarchistic, obscene, hilarious, and violent, with a charming little love story (about a girl, a boy, and his split personality) to make up it's creamy nougat center. If I wasn't able to bring my collection of Palahniuk's novels to the island with me, this would stand in nicely.

Hannibal Lecter is my barometer for how much someone terrifies me. For instance, the creepy guy at the back of a dark alley is about a Quarter Lecter while Charles Manson is approaching a Full Lecter. Nothing however is higher than a Full Lecter ... just like nothing is lower than Kelvin; it's just not possible. The man killed a guy in the next cell just by whispering to him.

One of my favorite movies of all-time, but not sure I'd want to spend the rest of my life alone on an island with the good doctor.

Still, a solid if not daring pick. Nice little easy chaser after Schindler's List.;)

I'll give you something happier next time Brickie. I promise. :p

tombstone was a good movie but...didn't anyone else find the climax (with the river shootout, oh, 45 minutes or so from the actual end of the movie) a little out of sorts?

and with no shawshank and no braveheart...my island blows.

Since Godfather movies are gone (Part III don't count) and GGG stole the Fight Club....

Goodfellas (1990)

Fantastic cast, Scorsese at his very best directing, very stylish but never superficially so. Again, I pick in order of re-watchabillity and there are very few movies that I will stop for and watch until the end when surfing cable channels. Most other ones are already picked actually.

And I choose:

Raiders of the Lost Ark

I didn't think this movie would still be here (given recent events), so I have to juggle my selections a bit and hope that some of my others might fall a bit as well.

This movie is full of action, adventure, romance, danger, and snakes ("Why'd it have to be snakes?")! Ford is perfect in this role, and it remains the best of the series. Oh yeah, and having a bunch of Nazis running around in it doesn't hurt much either. :D

From wiki:

When released on June 12, 1981 the $20 million film was a huge success, easily the highest grossing film (earning $384 million worldwide) of that year, and, at the time, one of the highest-grossing movies ever made.[25] It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, in 1982 and won four (Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration). It also won a Special Achievement Award for Sound Effects Editing, bringing the total Oscars to five. It won numerous other awards, including a Grammy and Best Picture at the People's Choice Awards. Spielberg was also nominated for a Golden Globe.[26]

In 1998, the American Film Institute placed the film at number 60 on its top 100 films of the first century of cinema. In 1999, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Indiana Jones has become an icon, being listed as Entertainment Weekly's third favorite action hero, while noting "some of the greatest action scenes ever filmed are strung together like pearls" in this film.[34]

I'm glad this was still available here and am honored to have it on my island. :D

I am hereby sending out evil hands off vibes to Aleksander and Lowenherz as I just realized thee was a perfect 2nd pick to get my isalnd truly off and running.

Accordingly I would like to announce that Aleksander has PM'd me with this choice:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0372832/

And Lowenherz followed it up with this one:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384803/

So onto my pick....:D

I like the way one of the reviews begins:

"Tabasco Sauce in your eyes would be better than this "

Brick, I'm surprised at you. I clearly PM'd "Manos: The Hands of Fate", followed by "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" and "Howard the Duck". I wasn't going to get to Alien 51 until round five at the earliest.

Ah! A true movie connoisseur. :p

My apologies...I get those mixed up sometimes.

This is REALLY fun. We should consider doing variations of the movie game... like B-movies, horror films, sci-fi films, etc...

Well that sucked the two I wanted on my next pick were taken by Warhawk and bozwell. I hate you both lol. So here is my next pick

L.A. Confidential

La_confidential.jpg

I love the style of this film. The acting was phenomenal. I have watched this movie around 10 times and still not bored of it. This is probably best acting job Kim Basinger has every done and probably the only movie other then 9 1/2 Weeks I really liked her in.

L.A. Confidential is a GREAT pick, and the first movie taken from my core list. I just got sucked into watching it again on cable a couple days ago (even though I own the DVD), and it will be missed on my island.

small request, for everyone's movie descriptions, if you can make sure to add the year, that'd be great. Just to save me time from looking each one up on imdb

btw, i've never seen that movie...maybe i'll check it out

You all have obliterated my draft board past this point (thanks), but on the bright side, my alternate number one pick is still on the board ...

... 'til now

Pulp-Fiction-Poster-C12345529.jpeg

Pulp Fiction - 1994

The movie that actually managed to resurrect John Travolta's career (until Battlefield Earth killed it again)

A tongue-in-cheek homage to 70s blaxplotation films, 40s pulp magazines, neo-noir and pop culture, Tarantino displays his trademark mix of ironic humor and gratuitous violence before it became cliched for him to do so.

Stars a cast of heavy hitters including Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Harvey Keitel, Uma Thurman, Christopher Walken and Ving Rhames, has an insanely memorable sound track (who could ever get Dick Dale's rendition of Misirlou out of their heads?) and the type of quirky, sharp and fast paced dialogue you expect from Tarantino.

And on top of that, there's a slightly poingnant theme of redemption throughout. Jules' line "I'm trying real hard to be the Shepard" sticks with you well after the credits roll.

A briefcase washed up onto my beach, and when I opened it, behind the golden glow I found a royale with cheese and this DVD.

Better question: who would want to? A constant loop of Dick Dale makes every day happy. :D

This pick... a bit of a blessing and a curse, I must say. I'm sad to see it (finally) go, but it was one of three movies running in a dead heat for my next pick, so this will make that choice a little easier.

Whew!

L.A. Confidential is a great movie (and Russel Crowe's turn it in was just amazing in its intensity). Pulp Fiction is a great movie. I was not a serious threat to take either as they were a way down my lists after my purer entertainments. But I congratulate both of you...on not taking a movie I needed to fill out a major niche for me. :p

200px-The_Matrix_Poster.jpg

The Matrix (1999) -- Yes, as DMass correctly guessed I would have been a considerable threat to take Aliens to fill the scifi action category on my island (I would not have been much of a threat to the Star Wars series which faded considerably in my estimation as I grew up and went back to it as an adult). But this is a great 1b choice for that niche, and despite being somewhat stained by the failed sequels and overall weirdness that has enveloped the Wachowski brothers since, its still an iconic movie that inspired all sorts of imitators of its trenchcoat fetish and bullettime special effects. Best of it all it had a brain, and succeeded wildly not only as action flick, but also as mind blowing scifi. You all can groan in angst and darkness on your islands all you want -- my island is going to be more entertaining than if I was marrooned in Vegas. ;)

Et tu, Brick?

This was going to be my next choice, now that Pulp Fiction is off the table. I even watched it this afternoon to reaffirm my decision.

Meaniehead.

:(

I have been following the choices with great interest and enjoyment. I am surprised that Matrix lasted this long.
