Well, this stinks. ;) Of course, picking where I am, Star Wars IV and V are gone, as is Aliens (probably my #1 movie, especially in the action/sci-fi area). There are some comedies that if I don't choose now will more than likely be gone soon, but I want something "more" for my first pick:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Extended Special Edition)

It was a hard choice between the original and this one (as well as a lot of other movies :p ), but I think the second wins out for outstanding special effects (especially the new Terminator), a fantastic performance by Linda Hamilton, and overall picking up where the first left off and taking the series to new heights.

Along with the movies listed above, this is one of my top 5 favorite action movies of all time. James Cameron can almost do no wrong in a film, this being an excellent example.

It's got some good music in it (Bad to the Bone, You Could be Mine), great fight scenes and special effects, and you can feel the fear and tension/emotion from Linda in this film. Actually, I thought the actor for John Connor in this movie (Edward Furlong) was the weak link, but not enough to make me pass on this. Not the best movie ever, but it has to be on my island. And, since I am sneaking the others on, too, no problem! ;)

One of the best movie baddies I have seen, the new Terminator is ruthless and cunning with the tricks it has up it's liquid metal sleeve.

From wiki:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day, commonly abbreviated as T2, is a 1991 action / science fiction film directed, co-written and co-produced by James Cameron. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong and Robert Patrick. It picks up around ten years after the events of The Terminator, and follows Sarah Connor, her 10-year-old son John, and a protector from the future (as in the first film), as they try to prevent Judgment Day, a day in the future when machines will begin to exterminate the human race.

T2 was a significant box office and critical success. It had an impact on popular culture, and is considered by many to be hugely influential in the genres of action and science fiction.[1] The film's visual effects include many breakthroughs in computer-generated special effects, marking the first use of natural human motion for a CG character and the first computer-generated main character.[2] The film won several awards including four Academy Awards for makeup, sound mixing, sound editing and visual effects.

List updated. Notable that its almost all movies from the 70's and 90's. All good choices though. However, I've never heard of the Glengarry one. Whats that one even about?

Blade Runner (1992 - The Director's Cut)

I don't really have a #1 movie or top 5 or even top 10. I do have a list of movies that I'd like with me on a desert island and that I am pretty sure I could watch over and over and over again (there are some great movies, especially war movies that you just can't say that about).

Very much like Star Wars ep4-6, this movie has gone through so many releases that noone even remembers the original theatrical release.

I love every version, for different reasons, but the original director's cut is my favorite (not the Final Cut). It just feels that way.

The movie is based on Philip K Dick novel, directed by Ridley Scott, Vangelis scored the soundtrack, Harrison Ford in male lead role, Sean Young (pre-insano) is in it, what more can you possibly ask for?

Blade Runner (1992 - The Director's Cut)

Yeah, this is another one I considered, but I wouldn't watch it as often as T2, so I passed knowing it wouldn't make it back to me.

Blade Runner also has Ruger Hauer and Edward James Olmos in impressive roles, and well done. I think some of the "outlandish" aspects of Sebastian's apartment were overdone.

Still, a great choice.

I certainly did not expect to have all of my top choices still available to me with my first pick, and it made the decision process at lot more difficult than I'd anticipated. On the negative side, it could mean that I'll later lose one of my favorite movies even though I technically have the opportunity to save it now. On the positive side, however, it could also mean that I've so completely misjudged the universal must haves that I'll still get a good number of my top choices. Which, for the record, would be sweetness.

In any case, my first pick is:

51vq890ajmlss500bc1.jpg

Se7en (1995) -- A bit of a downer, perhaps, but still an incredibly crafted thriller that has remained every bit as gripping no matter how many times I've seen it. Great writing, really good acting (even from the previously pretty-boy Pitt), effectively creepy, I just really love this film.

And with my pick we go with.....

Schindler's List [1993]

schindler.jpg

From wikipedia - Schindler's List is a 1993 biographical film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Steven Zaillian, telling the story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than one thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust. It was based on the novel Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally, and starred Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ralph Fiennes as Schutzstaffel officer Amon Göth, and Ben Kingsley as Schindler's accountant Itzhak Stern. The film was both a box office success and recipient of seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Score.

For me, a movie that continues to bring me past tears and into hysterics in the end. As a personal note, when I made the school mock trial team my coaches, as a kind of get to know you, asked that we give a closing argument on our favorite movie. I tried to give a close on this movie, complete with pin from my lapel (if you know the end of this movie, you know what I'm talking about). Needless to say I didn't quite make it all the way through the close without tearing up. Luckily I was already on the team. ;)

So...you would want to be stuck all alone on a desert island watching Schindler's list for the rest of eternity?

Man, you are a glutton. :p

So I turn around for a second and Se7en and T2 are taken. Both really played an impact when they came out. But none can come close to one of my favorite films of all time.

Braveheart
Mel-Gibson---Braveheart-Photograph-.jpg

Some people I have come across just don't get this movie, but I get everything about it. My favorite Mel Gibson film by far and an amazing piece of film. It has it all and I couldn't think of living anywheres without it.

And that's a round! And one loaded with waaay more 90s films than I would've imagined. Requesting another mod fix to the topic title. Thanks.

atxrocker is still up

I feel that my first pick of the second round is extremely strong...

godfather-2.jpg

This movie is so good on so many levels that it would be very hard for me to even try to get my point across. Volumes 1 and 2 of this film are just so incredibly undeniable that i almost taunt you to critique this movie. while part 3 was very unbelonging, this pick is an all time classic.

Well, tis your island, and these things are all taste, but here, I'll bite;): The Godfather series is one of the most overrated pieces of popular entertainment in popular entertainment history. There is merit to it no doubt, but this bizarre fascination with that series, and mob lowlifes in general, is just very strange. And of course it has long since become something that everybody knows they are SUPPOSED to like, so its almost impossible for anybody to come into the series and take a clear headed look at it at this point, and say, so that's it?

All of that said, I think I may have liked 2 better than 1, but you could give me 100 movies on my island and it still wouldn't be there. The only reason I would own it would be to impress other people with -- kinda like the Bible that sits on my shelf. And with nobody else coming around...

hey, you taunted... :p

I know plenty of people who feel the same way.

I think they're all nuts, too. ;)

This is my favorite movie. Great pick.

I did. And I understand where you are coming from. I feel the same way about Scarface in regards to being overrated. (not to say I dislike scarface) But not this film. I can still watch this movie in it's entirety. Everyones opinion can differ on these type of films but life without the Corleone's on my island would be wrong.

In lieu of justifying my pick, I'll just mention my two favorite quotes:

Tombstone-Poster-C10134915.jpeg

"So run, you cur! Tell all the other curs the law is comin'... You tell 'em I'M comin'! And hell's comin' with me, you hear? HELL'S COMIN' WITH ME!"

"Wyatt Earp is my friend."

"Hell, I got lots a friends."

"I don't."

I condsidered adding Tombstone to my list, but left it off. I do love that move, though, despite the fact that I normally HATE westerns. Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday is just awesome.

I hope these islands are close enough to swim to. I'd hate to miss a screening of Blade Runner, A Few Good Men and Braveheart ... which all would have been on my sandy shores if it wasn't for you pesky, meddling kids!

In lieu of justifying my pick, I'll just mention my two favorite quotes:

DAMN! This is actually the movie I was most conflicted about taking as the first rounder - $#&^@(*^@

I just knew you were going to end up taking it for some reason.... AAARRRGHH!

Val Kilmer made that movie.....great performance...

I agree Lowenherz...Dimedropper needs to have a Shawshank screening once a month...I'll bring the butterlike substance if someone will bring the popcorn... (not like I'm still distraught about not getting that movie...this will be part of my healing process...;))

addedum...we apparently will be island hopping for a double bill of A Few Good Men and Tombstone...

I'm gonna need more butterlike substance...

And the next pick goes too.....

Silence of the Lambs [1991]
xin_2510031817364512797549.jpg

Anthony Hopkins scared the crap out of me when I was younger with his performance in this movie. Ok, I admit, He still does.

Well yes, but would they come onto a messageboard and publicly annoounce it? ;)

My opinions are not always original, but my gift for sacrilege remains unrivaled. :p

I knew I should have publicly badmouthed Springsteen when I had the chance. If I went back and did it now, it would just look like I was stealing your schtick.
