Since we're on a string of "whew" can I whew right now?....After my list took a boatload of hits the last few days...AND given that I remembered a couple of movies I probably wanted more (life after Shawshankly) more than 12AM needed to be my first pick...I can let out a whew and take this..one of my penultimate watch repetitively movies.....

Airplane 1980

Never get tired of this...I love parody, and this was a masterful crafting of the art.

Surely you can't be serious.... I am serious, and don't call me Shirley..

or

Hospital??? Doctor was is it? ...It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now...

The perfectly deadpan Leslie Nielsen, the weirdly creepy Peter Graves...the clever (or Cleaver ;)) use of Barbara Billingsley, Kareem's rant, the Roger Overs.....the crash landing and multiple gate announcements...gawd..I could go on.....

Love it.

Flight Control: Flight 209 you're clear for takeoff.
Clarence Oveur: Roger.
Roger Murdock: Huh?

Clarence Oveur: What?
FC: Flight 209 clear for vector 324.
Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence.
Clarence Oveur: Roger, Roger, what's our vector, victor?
FC: Now we're in radio clearance, over.
Clarence Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur, over.
Victor Basta: Roger.
Roger Murdock: Huh?
FC: Roger, over.

Roger Murdock: Huh?
Victor Basta: Who?

Hahaha!

So, this is probably my dad's favorite movie. And it might be mine too, I'm not sure what my favorite is, but this is definitely up there in contention. I always remember him watching it when I was a little kid, every year around Christmas. Finally, when I was probably 11, I decided to watch it to. Now, it's just not Christmas if I haven't seen this movie.

Its A Wonderful Life - 1946

There's not much to say about this movie other than its great, and definitely the best Christmas movie ever. Rated the #1 most inspiration movie of all time by AFI, and the 8th best overall, it is seriously a must have on any island. James Stewart and Frank Capra at their best. If you can't be touched or inspired in someway by this movie, then you have no soul. And I'm being serious.

Dammit, now I want to go watch it. But its June.....dammit.

I had about 4 movies I was battling with before I settled on this one. With Braveheart off the board, I had to choose this film.

Gladiator-2000

I absolutely loved this movie. Russell Crowe solidified himself as a Hollywood A lister with his role as Maximus. Joaquin Phoenix was excellent (if not a bit creepy with his passes at his sister) in his role as Commodus. And the role of Proximo by Oliver Reed is often overlooked IMO. Some of the gladiator battles are just incredible with just enough gore to satisfy the macho and not offend the meak (or maybe the weak stomached would be offended?). The imagery of Rome and the Colosseum were spectacular. Again a movie I could never get sick of watching. I leave you with a quote:

"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

That gave me chills the first time I watched the movie.

Tombstone, Matrix, Gladiator, Airplane - you guys are reading my list, aren't you? STOP IT!

Makes me nervous. Twitchy. I might start getting upset. ;)

Gladiator-2000

(#%&*)! ... and further expletives in your general direction!

Gladiator is one of only four movies I actually saw twice in the theaters and I was counting on it to fill my Noble Vengence and Sweeping Epic niche.

First Gump, now Gladiator ... in the words of another Russell Crowe character "this is the second time he has done this to me. There will not be a third"

we won't like you when you get upset... :p i had hoped to take matrix with my pick after this one, but knew it was on most people's list. solid choice, brick.

wow, i just realized that we're only in the second round. since braveheart is off the board, i will have to go with mel's other fine epic, "the patrio...

kidding!

the usual suspects - 1995

403px-Usual_suspects_ver1.jpg

very entertaining film, thought the ensemble cast was very solid and had good chemistry, had a good score, and the ending was an excellent twist at a time when twist endings were still well-thought out instead of tacked on.

"I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." Well I believe in God, and the only thing that scares me is Keyser Soze.

Eh, I was thinking of just going with Krull and calling it a day. But I'll consider it.

Krull works too -- even get a Playboy Playmate out of that one (although who would hire a Playboy Playmate to "act" and then have her keep her clothes on is beyond me).

And poof. Just like that, this movie gets plucked from my list, and its gone.

NoBonus selects Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

With my pick, I select Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

lawrence_of_arabia_ver4.jpg

What is there to say about Lawrence of Arabia? It is only one of the greatest films of all time. Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Claude Rains, Omar Sharif, and Anthony Quinn are just some of the excellent actors in this film who have highly dramatic performances. This movie is both a war movie and a dramatic, historical epic. Let's see, what else? Huge sets, an amazing and true story, destruction of the Ottoman empire, and a brilliant portrayal of one of the greatest leaders the world has ever seen in the tragically short lived T.E. Lawrence (died at age 47). And, oh, did I mention, the special effects are actually "special" still (no lifeless CGI garbage, but actual large landscapes and explosions).

:cough: Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday :cough: I actually liked more than that...but that's what glues me to it...
I figured as much. :p

But to find out that that was Slim's attraction to the flick would be most surprising.
Late responding to this, obviously.

Val Kilmer was good in that movie, no question. But anybody who thinks that he's the best, or has the best scenes in the movie needs to re-watch the scene of Wyatt Earp utterly owning Billy Bob.

Plus, Sam Elliott = the epitome of cool in everything.
