I feel like the rookie rubbing elbows with the Kings Fans elite. Time to show I belong ... thanks to my new picture posting skills.

Apocalypse Now (1979)

Sure, some might find it overly dark, especially to choose it as one of only twenty movie options for a lifetime. But for me, I've never been so thoroughly engaged by a film as I was the first time I saw Apocalypse Now. I kept wondering how it would keep its pace throughout and continue to top itself as Willard and the crew of PBR Street Gang crept up the river closer to Kurtz.
And it never disappointed.

Listed in the AFI's Top 30 movies of all time. Star power includes the incomprable Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen, a Harrison Ford cameo and a very young Laurence Fishburne plus a memorable score mixing The Doors, The Stones and of course Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries.

I'm gonna be loving the smell of napalm every morning on my island.

I'm noticing from this draft I've underestimated the popular appeal of some of my favorite movies. I was foolish enough to think Shawshank would last until the 2nd or even 3rd round and thought I'd be snagging 12 Angry Men as a sleeper pick much later on. Who knew?

Oh, and Brick, until your pick I never made the connection that Hawkeye was played by Daniel "There Will Be Blood" Day-Lewis. So thanks for the epiphany.

Yes, I'm still recovering from the opening salvo of this draft..(I may eventually get over it...;)) But it should be fun and even more crazy than the music one has been, I at least have a priority of order for the music I'm drafting...this one feels more free for some reason, yet more likely for me not to get what I want. I just realized there probably was a movie I may now not get that I should have drafted as my first. I didn't because I inexplicably forgot to put it on my list despite staring at it everytime I walk past my bookcase. yiiiiikes...

[poker face]....:whistling:....[/poker face]

Alright, we'll allow an exception this time for D-Mass. But can some mod change the title of my thread to depict how the draft has indeed started?

Anyway, NoBonus is away, and he sent me his pick. This comes as no surprise, but I was hoping it'd still be around for me...

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - 1977

He didn't leave a summary, but this movie doesn't really need one. This movie is science fiction. It will be remembered and watched forever, along with (most) of its successors.

I will add a summary:

This is the single greatest science fiction film of all time. No movie is more imitated, parodied or quoted. I understand the argument that Empire Strikes Back is a better film, however, as a single film and not a part of a series, I feel this is the best film (since I am on a desert island and do not have the whole series, this logic makes sense to me). Also, this movie has it all, underdogs, teams of aliens, land and air battles, murder, an empire, mystical powers, love, hate, comedy, violence, and the list goes on. Last note: this film was made before the all-encompassing use of CGI, so the special effects show heart and ingenuity, not a lifeless, cold, CGI representation.

Could this be a little social commentary on episodes I-III? ;)

Probably also the editing on IV-VI for their re-releases. And just to make it clear, the copy of ANH that will be smuggled in on my island will be the original where Han shoots first. :D

Looks like I broke a few hearts with the Shawshank pick. That's the sign of a killer pick :D

I think the reason this broke hearts is because it was expected to be a solid pick later in the first round. I am sure a couple people were eye-ing this title. This does, however, mean certain other titles will fall into the laps of pickers (what do we call them? GMs? Players?). I am guessing the ones that are paying attention will benefit from this. Heck, I picked up Star Wars on the third pick... I was sure it would have been taken already.

I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies, so there was never any danger I'd take it! I have a few in mind for my later rounds. Hopefully they will all be their. I have no idea in what order, though. :(

Ignore the hype. See the original Star Wars movie; it has a lot to offer any moviegoer.

Reason #376 why I'm loving this Movie Draft thread idea: It inspired me to go out and purchase four titles on my draft board that I had not, until now, actually owned.

Thus doing my part to stimulate the economy and cement my status as a patriotic American.

Thanks Geritol ... I mean, Kingfans Movie Draft thread.

Agreed. At the time (1977), the effects were cutting edge and this movie blew the doors open for the sci-fi genre.

From wiki (no real spoilers):

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (originally released as Star Wars) is a 1977 space opera film, produced, written, and directed by George Lucas. It was the first of six films released in the Star Wars saga; two subsequent films continue the story while three others act as prequels. Ground-breaking in its use of special effects, this first Star Wars movie is one of the most successful films of all time and is generally considered one of the most influential as well.

Set far in the past in a distant galaxy, the movie tells the story of a plot by a group of freedom fighters known as the Rebel Alliance to destroy the flagship space station/weapon of an oppressive Galactic Empire. The plot follows the tale of farm boy Luke Skywalker who is suddenly thrust into the role of hero when he inadvertantly acquires the robots carrying the schematic plans of the station. He must accompany military general and rebel sympathizer Obi-Wan Kenobi on a mission to rescue the owner of the robots, rebel leader Princess Leia Organa, deliver the plans to the rebel's secret base, and help destroy the station before it reaches the rebel base.

Inspired by films like the Flash Gordon serials and the samurai films of Akira Kurosawa, as well as such critical works as Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Lucas began work on Star Wars in 1973. Produced with a budget of US$11,000,000 and released on May 25, 1977, the film went on to earn $460 million in the United States and $337 million overseas, and receive several awards, including 10 Academy Award nominations. It was re-released several times, sometimes with significant changes; the most notable versions are the 1997 Special Edition and the 2004 DVD release, which were modified with CGI effects and recreated scenes.

If you can, get the original 1977 version, it is unedited and the best. The "updated" versions add a bunch of CGI stuff in the background and some reworked effects. One thing they did was change who shot first in the cantina scene - Han Solo was a bada** and took care of business, in the remake he only shoots after some CGI work makes the bad guy shoot first and he's "defending himself". Ugh.

This is why I will always own a VHS player.

Also from wiki:

Although most changes were minor or cosmetic in nature, some fans believe that Lucas degraded the movie with the additions.[46] For instance, a particularly controversial change in which a bounty hunter named Greedo shoots first when confronting Han Solo has inspired T-shirts brandishing the phrase "Han Shot First."[47]

Edit - and A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back have no stupid Ewok, Jar-Jar, very stupid robot army, or other kiddie characters playing major roles annoying the he** out of most adult movie watchers like the rest do.

Wow. You guys ARE cutthroat. Some excellent choices so far; I'm really enjoying just reading the reasoning behind the selections. Keep up the excellent work!

The talent in this film is amazing. I loved the acting. I could watch this movie every day and still not get bored of it. Not my number 1 pick or top 5 but since you guys already picked some of those movies this was next on my list.

The original editions (at least non-Special Edition "original") are actually available on DVD now, though it looks like they transfered them right over from Laserdisc as they didn't even bother to give them an anamorphic transfer. If Lucas had even done a half decent job I'd gladly retire my Laserdisc as everything else has pretty much finally made its way to DVD now.

Link?

Maybe I'm just a new-age Star Wars fan, but I cherish my remastered original trilogy. Sure the Han shoots first scene sucks bawls, but I can't stand to watch the Death Star explode in the original Star Wars where it looks like someone is drawing flames on a piece of cardboard and holding it up to a projector.

I'll take a few crappy scene changes my George Lucas for just a little bit of eye candy. The meat of all three classics are still there.

I cannot argue that certain scenes were enhanced/improved, it just went a little too far.

Now THERE is a darkhorse first round pick.

P.S. tradepeja, remember to update the draft board/list. A "commisssioner" has duties you know. ;)

I mean DAMN....yet another high draft pick gone.....

This movie was BRILLIANT, totally agree on the talent....

We need a pact that we'll stop stealing each other's higher round picks so we'll all still have picks left at the end of the later rounds...;)

Blame dimedropper, the Shawshank domino effect is why I will only have 12 Angry Men and a bunch of low budget B movies on my island... ;)

I've got plenty to share. My core list -- about 35 titles -- is so far untouched. Counting all the titles I put aside for just-in-case alternates, only one of my 65 ear marked movies has yet been mentioned. I was expecting WAY more of that first group to have been taken by now.
