Okeeeeee, since I was last checking the draft picks, I see that I have lost yet another one...and yes Warhawk, I am a lollygagger...love Bull Durham!

Bad News Bears 1976

Ahhhhh a lovable rag tag mismatched cellar dwelling little leaguers. Who among us hasn't been part of a team like that? Walter Matthau as beer drinkin' coach Buttermaker and young Tatum O'Neal as the aptly named Amanda Whurlizer the fireballer pitcher who on the side wanted to get and her mom and Buttermaker back together. Kelly Leake the renegade who turns out to be the star of the team. Funny thing happens when they stop sucking and actually start winning. The lure of winning and getting close to the title and the realization that winning or winning at all costs isn't the most important thing is a priceless thing to teach. Um, if you forget the profanity and free flowing beer that also are prevalent. This is still great fun, even though I cringe at some of the scenes... "oh you can't do that nowadays" And who hasn't played with a Timmy Lupus in their day?

The sequels as is mostly the case were lame and the remake with Billy Bob Thornton was horrible. There was no need to update or remake this one.

Alright I got a few spare minutes here to get my pick up before I have to go in order to not slow this thing entirely down. So, with a huge shift from my last pick I will now take probably my only horror flick of the draft:

The Shining - 1980

Heeeeeeeeeeeeere's Johnny. Jack's role in this movie completely makes up for his years of being a Laker fan. Definitely the best horror movie ever made.

Top Gun - 1986



I've been holding off picking this movie because I figured I could get it later and perhaps I could have waited further, but damn I love this movie. This is as good as it gets for me in the 80's and the reason surround sound home theatre was made. I remember the first time I watched Top Gun around the time Bose put out one of their earlier surround systems. AMAZING. So many classic lines and scenes and man was Kelly McGillis smoking in this movie. Maverick, Ice Man, Goose, a short appearence from Meg Ryan. "You can be my wingman any time.....bull****, you can be mine."

alrighty, time for the obligatory horror/scary movie pick (not my cup of tea, these):

the sixth sense - 1999

haley joel osmet (sp?) was quite creepy in this movie, as were all of the dead people. generally, a nicely told story with a twist ending that left audiences buzzing. of course, the first time i watched it, it was a bootleg download, so i really couldn't tell what was going on and by the end, i vaguely knew that the story somehow involved ghosts. oh well.

i see dead people...

I didn't think I'd like this movie. In fact, I was so convinced I'd hate it I put off watching it for a couple of years. When I finally did get trapped into seeing it, I was truly surprised. I loved it!

Napoleon Dynamite - 2004

And ditto on the assessment of Napolean Dynamite...I thought I'd hate it and while not getting trapped I was in a situation where I wasn't able to not not watch it...I got some laughs out of it.

Fargo (1996)

Besides great acting performances, this movie does what I like movies to do: create emotional conflict. William H. Macy's character hatches a plot that ends up killing his wife and yet it's difficult not to feel sorry for him as the situation spins more out of control. Gruesome murders are offset by some pretty funny scenarios. Frances McDormand is outstanding, winning the Oscar for best actress and Macy is brilliant as he comes up with one bad idea after another to dig himself out of his mess. And, of course, great writing AND direction by the Coen brothers.

Crash (2004)
This one caught me by surprise. I rented it one night I was bored, not expecting much. In fact, I wouldn't have rented it only for 3 other films higher on my list were unavailable that night. I knew it had won awards etc., but the storyline appeared a little out of my taste. After watching it, I was stunned. Really, really enjoyed the film, really makes you think about things. Some great performances in their too, I thought Terrence Howard was great, as was Ludacris. Some added humour too. If you haven't seen this film, go get it. It's definitely worth a look.

He Got Game (1998)
Say what you want about Ray Allen in this film, but I thought he was pretty good. He's no Denzel, but who is? Aside from the storyline, it's another flawless performance from my favourite actor, Denzel. I had trouble picking this over another basketball film, but finally went with this one. I think my other contender will be gone by the time my next pick arrives, but oh well. There are about 10 films I could have picked here, and I have a feeling I'll be kicking myself later on. I just know I'm forgetting some films I would have taken here.

Stand By Me - 1986

Great movie from my childhood that reminds me of something that could happen in my hometown. One of the few movies adapted from a Stephen King story that turned out well. I'm not a big Rob Reiner fan, but I just realized that this is my second pick of a film under his direction (When Harry Met Sally). I'd put this film up against just about any other movie from the 80's and I think it holds up well.

I selected Clash of the Titans (1981)

This was Ray Harryhausen's final feature film and a masterpiece of stop-motion animation, a whirlwind of Greek mythology, and, oh yeah, tons and tons of awesome monsters! This movie had a definite impact on my life and I could not be alone on an island without this masterpiece.

And, oh yeah, I am back. Thank you to VF21 for the help!

Napoleon Dynamite - 2004

I selected Napoleon Dynamite as it is the closest to actual depiction of my time in High School... though, my high school experience was decidedly better than Napoleon's, I was totally friends with two or three Napoleon Dynamites. the ultimate High School movie in my opinion AND the funniest movie I have ever seen. Also, this is the next great source for quotes... I mean honestly...

"Hey, Napoleon. What did you do last summer again?"

"I told you! I spent it with my uncle in Alaska hunting wolverines!"

i know i'm supposed to be on a deserted island, but i don't care, i'm sneaking my wife on and we are going to watch our favorite comedy:

zoolander - 2001

IMO, this is the best comedy from the ferrell/wilson/stiller/vaughn/etc. mafia. (as a side: are these the only people making comedy movies these days???) just a flat-out hilarious story line with silly jokes, slapstick action, and breakdance fighting! and the memorable lines come out the wazoo in this movie. definitely something i would watch over and over. so i don't care if this may be a little early, i gots to have my blue steel!

blue steel? ferrari? le tigre?! it's the same look! doesn't anyone else notice this?! i feel like i'm taking crazy pills!!!!

Mugatu's crazy pills line has definitely made it into my regular usage. Zoolander is another one that got crowded out of my pick, but I love that movie.

Clash of the Titans was a movie I had to watch repeatedly...not because I wanted to mind you...because my baby sister LOOOOOOOED it and wanted to watch it over and over when I baby sat her. Ugh...it was cool up til the 45th time I'd seen it... and the monsters were cool.

Good cheesy fun, but I have to admit I in no way anticipated that one getting drafted. Makes me think a little though -- I enjoy a little older stop action type cheese every once in a while. Maybe I should think about digging up one of those old things for my own island.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)



I had to go with a comedy seeing as I have yet to put one on my list. In my estimates this is one of the best to come out of the 90's. If you're not a Jim Carrey fan, you probably hated this movie. I was looking over the "memorable quotes" for this movie on IMDB and was laughing so hard as I read them. (It's actually been a while since I've watched this) Harry and Lloyd will definately bring my island some laughs.
