Ok, again…it took me a while to get which of my next three I would chose in what order. I wanted to go here because this was actually next on my list and it makes me have to think less and with Princess Bride now gone, let me take this before I lose another movie I could watch on a loop.

I read the book first when it came out back in the days when my summers meant being out of school, sleeping in and reading for fun - one summer this book came out and sucked me in, in a Jerry Springer sorta way. Then the movie came out a few years later and it probably became the closest thing to watching reality tv before reality tv became all the rage a few years later. I call this a guilty pleasure because I do have qualms about finding as much humor in the camp-ness of this movie, much like finding humor in the craziness that happens in reality television that passes as entertainment– given the subject matter that really isn’t funny. But Faye Dunaway is so freaking over the top in every way that I'm not sure how you don't get lost in the unintended comedic aspects of how this movie plays out. I can't quite put into words what my attraction to this movie is and I doubt the filmmakers intended me to feel this way . I know this film has a cult following, and you can count me and my sisters as followers. We can recite dialogue with the best of them. :o

btw....DAMNIT TO FREAKING HELL ON PRINCESS BRIDE....since I missed getting that in earlier...

;)

Wow, first Shawshank then Princess Bride ... it's been a pretty rough draft for you, hasn't it? Don't worry, I'll send Capn' Sparrow over in the Black Pearl to take you to the islands you really want to be on. :D

I am absolutely loving this thread. The movie picks are great, but the comments you make to each other are priceless.

I just hope Brick makes his soon. I have a sinking feeling my next choice fits right into his cinematic theme park theme and the suspense is killing me.

Nothing to fear Lowenherz. With my action hybrid section off to such a lovely beginning, its time to step on over and nab another all time comedy:

Naked Gun (1988)

I again had three ways to go here, and decided to play the field a bit. Looking ahead, I feel pretty confident that one of the three will be still be there next time I pick (I would not if the snake were heading the other direction), so barring bad luck that can wait until next pick. And I have a strong backup to my perfect 10 movie, although I really hope to nab it later. But now its time to add a second all time comedy to my island to continue my Most Entertaining Strip of Sand This Side of Tahiti theme. And with Airplane off the board, this one stands near supreme for rat a tat tat humor. Had the supreme pleasure of catching this one in the theater back in the day, and its the only time I've literally seen some guy laugh himself right out of his chair and into the aisle. Which was hilarious in and of itself. The presence of OJ Simpson could of course be considered a bit of a distraction, but considering he plays an idiot who is shot numerous times, falls onto a hot stove, steps into a bear trap, gets smashed in the face by a birthday cake, drowns in a harbor, and then ends the movie wheelchair bound and being inadvertently sent hurtling down a flight of stairs and over the upper deck balcony of a baseball stadium by Leslie Nielsen...well, poetic justice, no? :p

"Hey Look, it's Enrico Palazzo!"

That one stung, Brick ... that one stung real bad.

Losing Christmas Vacation and the Naked Gun in the same round ... ouch! I'm just thankful I stepped up and grabbed Office Space while I still could, otherwise I might be marrooned on an island devoid of laughter. Marisa and Claudia would not be pleased.

So what is your choice now? ;)

Please don't take mine - I'd really like to have Attack of the Killer Tomatos! avaialble when I have my turn.... :p

I've quickly realized during the course of this draft I had to change my strategy on the fly and protect some personal favorites whose popular appeal I had greatly underestimated.

And this pick is a prime example. While there are two "classics" I had considered taking here, I'm instead going with a pure popcorn rollercoaster I'd hoped to take much later and gambling the others will survive the gauntlet.

Ocean's Eleven - 2001

A remake of the original 1960 rat pack vehicle (although they have very little in common with each other), this movie takes the basic premise of its predecessor (put together all-star ensamble cast, head to vegas, have some fun, put it on film) and expands on it by adding slick, smooth, one-liner-riden dialogue, a love triangle with a zen-tastic villain to pretend there's a plot and what amounts to a series of back alley three-card monte slights of hand.

And you know what? It works. Not because you're thrilled on the edge of your seat wondering if they'll get caught (they don't), nor because there's an M. Night Shyamalan style twist ending (there isn't), but simply because it's fun, has a smooth jazzy soundtrack and doesn't take itself seriously.

It's nice to know on my island there's going to be a poker night with Danny Ocean as the dealer ... and the house always wins.

Caper flicks are always fun, and that gang always seems to be having a hoot, even in the lamentable sequels.

Ocean's Eleven very nearly made my list, but I figured it would be overkill with Out of Sight already there. Good choice.

Not to mention Se7en and Fight Club to cover your Brad Pitt base. I figured you were trying to corner the market so I had to act fast. :D

Here is my pick. I was going to take it earlier but I thought it might be left in latter rounds, but seeing some of the picks of people I wanted to make sure. It is probably 5th movie of all time for me.

Dark City 1998

Darkcityposter.jpg

This movie was the Matrix before the Matrix. This movie had style, acting and a hell of a story. It really is a like an old detective/Sci Fi/Thiller/ Paranormal movie all one in . This movie I think is one of most rewatchable classics I own on DVD. If you have not watched this what are you waiting for?

Snazzy sleeper pick there. Not on my list, and frankly I am not sure how often I would watch such a thing, but a lot of respect for the dark vision of that one.

Ditto. Didn't make my list because when I owned the DVD I very rarely chose to watch it, but I do think it's a very good film.

Kinda juggling a few picks here hoping that some continue to fall.

Gonna go with another comedy here - need more laughs on my island before my list is done. :D With that thought, I am inviting Ferris Bueller to join me on the island on his Day Off.

I'll start going back to action movies later.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

I love this movie. Matthew Broderick in a great role for him, a PITA sister, a very nice looking GF, and Alan Ruck as his best friend he drags into trouble. This movie hit while I was in high school and captures a lot of the reasons why lots of kids don't want to be in HS to begin with.

Ferris: The key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands. It's a good non-specific symptom; I'm a big believer in it. A lot of people will tell you that a good phony fever is a dead lock, but, uh... you get a nervous mother, you could wind up in a doctor's office. That's worse than school. You fake a stomach cramp, and when you're bent over, moaning and wailing, you lick your palms. It's a little childish and stupid, but then, so is high school.

And the school admin folks were a riot, with great delivery:

Grace: Oh, he's very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, d***heads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude.

Ed Rooney: I don't trust this kid any further than I can throw him.
Grace: Well, with your bad knee Ed, you shouldn't throw anybody... Its true.
Ed Rooney: What is so dangerous about a character like Ferris Bueller is he gives good kids bad ideas.
Grace: Mmm-hmm.
Ed Rooney: Last thing I need at this point in my career is fifteen hundred Ferris Bueller disciples running around these halls. He jeopardizes my ability to effectivley govern this student body.
Grace: Well, makes you look like an *** is what he does, Ed.

Ferris often speaks to the camera/audience with bits of insight, suich as this:

Ferris: I do have a test today. that wasn't bulls***. It's on European socialism. I mean, really, what's the point? I'm not European. I don't plan on being European. So who cares if they're socialists? They could be fascist anarchists. It still doesn't change the fact that I don't own a car. Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I'd still have to bum rides off people.

Anyways, this movie is very much fun and I can't get enough of the Yello song "Oh, Yeah" playing in the background. Always fun to watch Ferris' sister kick the s*** out of the principal, too. :D

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

From Wikipedia:

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a 1975 film directed by Miloš Forman. The film is an adaptation of the 1962 novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. The movie was the first to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director, Screenplay) since It Happened One Night in 1934, an accomplishment not repeated until 1991, by The Silence of the Lambs.

This is probably the first or maybe second real movie I saw as a kid. Made me appreciate movies in a completely different way. I've seen it at least once a year since then and I owned in VHS (pal and ntsc) or DVD most of my life.

At any rate it'd be nice to "have" Jack on the island from time to time. The basketball scene is a huge bonus too!

Yes, this could have been lurking somewhere deep on my list as well. Truly one of the 80's classics, and with a sense of style too.

Mia Sara BTW was the gf, and a crying shame she never really took off as an actress therafter -- she had a sophisticated cute to her.

I was actually kinda worried about you snaking it if I let it fall. Sounds like it was probaly further down your list but I needed to add some more laughs and didn't want it to get away....

Of course, this probably means one or two of the other comedies I have shortlisted might be gone instead, but what can you do?

I think that is one reason this movie is so fun - Ferris plays all the angles and has so much fun doing it.

So was watching the bit parts by Charlie Sheen (boy in police station):

Boy in Police Station: Drugs?
Jeannie: Thank you, no. I'm straight.
Boy in Police Station: I meant, are you in here for drugs?
Jeannie: Why are you here?
Boy in Police Station: Drugs.

and Ben Stein:

Economics Teacher: In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the... Anyone? Anyone?... the Great Depression, passed the... Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?... raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. "Voodoo" economics.

:D

My list is getting difficult to navigate as this draft goes on, I must say. I'm just too damn much of a cinema-phile and have a hard time considering life without my entire DVD collection at my disposal. At some point soon, I'm going to have to start getting strict with myself in editing my choices. Either that, or plan to get stranded on an island within Blockbuster's delivery area. It's just not a good sign when even my own list reminds me of things that I need to add.

In any case, both due to the fact that comedies are starting to get nabbed at a record pace and the fact that my island needs more diversity than my initial pick here would have brought, I am going out of order and once again tapping the Clooney mine for my 5th pick:

ohbrotherwhereartthoudq6.jpg

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) -- I've seen this movie more times than I can even remember -- four times in theaters, more than I would ever care to admit on DVD, and even more on cable -- but no matter how many times I've seen it, there are moments that make me laugh like it's brand new. Everything about this film is spot on, as far as I'm concerned. The direction, the art direction, the period details, the music, the script, the pace, the performances are all wonderfully entertaining. Plus, we finally get to see Clooney living up to the Cary Grant comparisons he's always received, as a large part of Grant's charm was always in his ability to go slapstick as freely and as easily as he could go serious.

I'd love to see Clooney do more work in that vein. Nice pick.
