Tropical Island Movie Draft Thread - ROUND 20 FINISHED!!!

Now THIS is a fad lmao!!!!

Um..which I'll join...have seen none of them despite peer pressure to do so, I read the Hobbitt in 6th grade and that's about as far as I'm willing to go.

Warhawk: As commissioner of this fine thread I am going to flex my tiny bit of power here.

The LoTR "trilogy" or "saga" or "long *** group of movies" or "one reallly REALLY long *** movie" whatever you want to call it is loved and hated by many. (I'm part of the former group)

I was going to select Groundhog Day in my next pick. Then, I was going to select the Two Towers when that got stolen away from me. However, I'm feeling nice today.

Though I do see you getting all three of the movies as a huge selling point for votes in the playoffs, it might also been seen as a slight turn off to some. What I'm saying is, you can claim all three. But on one condition, you'll have to forfeit your next pick.

Accept or refuse here or in PM.

If there is a huge public outcry to this, I may crumpled like a folded napkin and not allow it, but it looks to me that half of this thread hates the movies anyway.

I think I am one of two others with critical trilogies on our picked list and I have no trouble with this...(though I would have traded a pick for the rest of the Star Wars films, but no biggie) but does he/she get 3 movies for 2 picks? Shouldn't pick 20 be forfeited as well?

i had a tough time debating between this one and snatch but ultimately like i said snatch got the nod. this movie is awesome. brick- think you'd definitely like it or at least be entertained in the very least.

Its possible -- but you would be surprised just how little I esteem the flood of self-consciously hip/cool garbage of the last 15 years.

Consider this one voice in the outcry.

They were three separate books. Three separate movies. Three of the highest rated movies of all time (heathens such as that commie gogogadget aside). And once you start doing that there is no clean place to draw the line. Star Wars? Matrix? Godfather? Bourne? Its the slippery slope.

I have enough arrows in my quiver to strike all of you with my elven carved bow ;). JK

I actually didn't watch the "fellowship" in the theatre because I was so anti this type of movie. However, I did end up watching it on DVD and ended up enjoying the trilogy with Return of the King being my favorite. I would have picked it somewhere down the line.

Just thought I'd send some positive comments towards your pick Warhawk since there were a run of negative responses.:)

Agreed.

Seconded.

Except that commie remark.

As Warhawk pointed out, and as is obvious to anyone who has seen FoR or TTT, it really isn't three movies. Its one movie. (oh, and its one book too)

As for the other series you mentioned, they are definitely different movies. That's where I draw the line.

Without even addressing the difficulty of drawing a line, which WOULD be an issue, I wouldn't like this move. Even though I'm more into the fun of the draft process than the strategy of the final voting process, there IS a final voting process. I couldn't possibly care less about the LOTR series and would only choose one of the films if I were to name my island Purgatory, so I'm not worried about missing out, but giving Warhawk 21 movies on 19 picks -- three of which are hugely popular -- is an unfair advantage in that voting process.

What's the guiding principle? Personal opinion? It has to be something absolute.

And the books haven't been one book in 50 years. One story. But three books. Three seperately released movies.

First of all, its not difficult where to draw the line. I just did. If you can find any other series or trilogies where it is explicitly obvious that they were meant to be one film, I will consider allowing them too.

Second of all, he'd be getting 19 films on 19 picks by this definiton. Let's see what he has to say about it. Maybe he won't even want to surrender a pick.

All trilogies/series are a continuation of the same story, no more or less so than the LOTR trilogy. The Star Wars trilogy is a continuous storyline, the Matrix trilogy is a continuous storyline (with a "to be concluded" between two of its chapters, no less), the Godfather trilogy is a continuous storyline that overlaps chronologically, etc.

Ultimately, however, I feel its just too late for such a rule change. There are movies that have already been taken that raise these questions. There are movies that I would have taken if I knew the trilogy thing was going to end up negotiable, as I left them off my list specifically because I didn't want to break up a series.

Which points out a problem with this new definition -- I see it very clearly as 21 films on 19 picks, because I see a trilogy of three films given separate release dates as being very clearly three separate films.

OK, I withdraw the suggestion.

Didn't mean to cause such a ruckus, just thought I'd throw it out there given the wiki info.

Move along, move along, nothing to see here. ;)

Amazing how things can work themselves out. You could argue many of trilogies are one complete story and this and that, but very few were intended that way from the beginning.

I doubt 3 spiderman, matrix, or pirates movies would have been made had the first not been a success. In regard to LotR, not only were all of the books one, but all of the movies were filmed simultaneously.

Anyway, I'll stop beating this dead horse now. No rule change, no pick drop, Warhawk only gets RotK. Gonna go update the board.

Love this movie. It gets better with age in my opinion. Who wants to spend their weekend in detention? Not me.

The Breakfast Club 1985

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

(not the word I just uttered when I opened this #$%(#$ thread and saw Breakfast Club, but it will keep the thread PG rated)

So, I'm gonna back away slowly from the Lord of the Rings mess that ensued in my absence ... yikes. Who would have thought a little series about hobbits and elves would cause such an uproar?

Anyway, for my next pick:

"Yeah, Hi, Bill Lumbergh here, letting you know this pick falling to Lowenherz in the fourth round is greaaaat."

Office Space - 1999

This movie has run the gamut from box-office flop, to cult classic, to pop culture phenom, to over-quoted mainstream cliche, to utter icon and all the way its simple office satire and clever one-liners consistantly made me laugh no matter how many times I heard them.

From TPS Reports to Pieces of Flair the film has woven its way seemlessly into our own lexicon simply because it's so frighteningly true to life.

And it doesn't even rely on starpower with Jennifer Aniston and Ron Livingston being the only real headliners, instead putting the satire itself on center stage.

Of course there's also the brilliant use of a classic hip-hop score to off-set the white collar, straight laced office scenes ... and put that No-Talent A** Clown Michael Bolton to shame.

So I'll be glad to never have a case of the Mondays on my island ... now that Milton will be there muttering about the immortal Red Swingline Stapler.

my "tenative" list had this going either in the 6th or 7th round. stupid me, this movie really made me laugh a few times and at the time was fresh as hell. really good pick, i just hope i get some of my other favorite comedys before they are gone.

I had it as a much later pick too, until comedies, both contemporary and classic, started flying off the board.

I'd love to say that I'll get on that but, in truth, I probably won't. I get that a lot of people find it funny, but there's at least a dozen really popular movies that a lot of people have seen that I haven't; actually, that applies to all the other genres as well. I don't even know why I volunteered to participate in this, as the truth is that I really don't watch a whole lot of movies. And most of the movies I watch are all of one type, as you will see starting in the fifth round.

In fact, having just re-checked the draft board, even though we're only very early into the fourth round, there's only one person participating in this thing has a list where I've actually seen all the movies, and that's me; everybody else has at least one movie that I've never seen, and most have two... So I really don't know what possessed me to get involved. :o

you probably share that in common with a lot of people. i just looked over the draft board and only one person other than myself has all movies that i've seen. But I can get not wanting to go out and grab every movie someone suggests. Although, if you can't laugh at Office Space, somethings gotta be wired a little wrong :P ....or maybe right. I dunno which it is.

Oh and btw, it was Warhawk.
