And too I believe the music thread....talk about convergence....:)

Wow holy crap. I knew I was up in the girl thread and have basically been doing a lot of....research since I posted my movie pick and up to now.

But I just checked the music draft and yep, I'm up there too. Didn't get a PM from bozzwell though, the tramp.

Heat is another one of those movies that I think is really good, but didn't make my list. As much as I love it (one of the first DVDs I bought, actually), and as much as I think it's probably a better film than a lot of the ones I'll be choosing, there are movies on my shelf that I watch more often.

alright, time for an action movie pick. i think i will pick a pioneer:

die hard - 1988

Die_hard.jpg

from wiki:

Die Hard is an Academy Award nominated 1988 American action film. It was written by Jeb Stuart and Steven E. de Souza, stars Bruce Willis, Bonnie Bedelia, Alan Rickman, Paul Gleason, Reginald VelJohnson and William Atherton, and was directed by John McTiernan. A critical and commercial success, Die Hard propelled Willis' film career and established Rickman as a popular portrayer of villains in American film. The film also started the Die Hard series.
The movie is based on a 1979 novel by Roderick Thorp titled Nothing Lasts Forever, itself a sequel to the book The Detective, which was previously made into a 1968 movie starring Frank Sinatra.

yippee-ki-yay, m*********er.

My Selection: Saving Private Ryan

With my fourth pick, I select the war epic Saving Private Ryan (1998)

PF_938894_OEM_15MB~Saving-Private-Ryan-Posters.jpg

This movie is the end-all be-all of war films in my opinion. An all-star ensemble cast including Tom Hanks and Matt Damon act brilliantly in the only war movie that really made me feel like I was there, in the thick of bloody combat on the beaches of Normandy... what an epic... what cinematography.. the fact that I am picking this up in the fourth round is a crime, it should have gone in the first round.

Excellent choices.

I think Die Hard had a serious claim on my next selection if it was still available.

er...NoBonus, think maybe you could find a little smaller pic to go with SPR? Playing havoc with the page formatting. :(

My bad... fixed...

Nice pick, BTW. I'd totally forgotten about SPR. Even if I hadn't, I wouldn't have gotten it. It would have been too far down on my list. I have so many films that I absolutely have to have on this island, I'm going to be devastated when someone else takes them. I'm going to be in a major pickle as to what my two picks will be, they're coming up soon.

These two picks are tormenting me. I have about 6 films that are on the same level for me, and I won't see more picks for quite awhile. So here goes:

When Harry Met Sally (1989)

whenharrydvdcover.jpg

Let me begin with a declaration: I HATE chick flicks. This one, however, I really like. It's basically the formula for ones that follow and none have really achieved the same greatness. Billy Crystal is hilarious....and he has to be since he isn't your typical Hollywood "love interest" type. Meg Ryan is great, too. My wife and I enjoy it so much that several quotes from it ended up in our wedding. Gotta have it on the island...if I'm not with my wife, it will at least remind me of her.

My two picks are up...

I hope nobody minds, but I think I'm going to make the picks in the morning, it's almost 3AM where I am and I'm pretty tired. I'll be back early tomorrow to make my picks.

"I'll have what she's having". That is one of the funniest lines in any movie ever. And it is doubly funny because that actress is really Rob Reiner's Mom! This is the first movie from my list to go, but it was down there a ways. I mentioned earlier to Slim that I would be a willing replacement if he wasn't feeling the Movie drafting thing. Let me know...

OK, after some hard, hard thinking I've finally decided my two picks.
My first one is ;

B00005JLG1.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Above The Rim (1994)
This, to me, this is a classic. My favourite basketball film. Also brings back some memories for me. Tupac is great in this, so it's an added bonus for me that I not only get to bring some of his music to my island, but also some of his talent as an actor. This film has a great soundtrack, too. "Regulators", "Pour out a little Liquor", and "Pain" are great songs.

With the first pick of the 5th round, I select ;

american_gangster.jpg

American Gangster (2007)
Yes, it's recent (which seems to be against the trend of this draft) but all the same it's a great film. Sparked a big interest in me and ultimately led to me buying books about Frank Lucas. Another big reason why I like this film ; Dnezel Washington. Denzel is the man! Without a doubt my favourite actor. I've seen all his films except about 2, and every single one of them I've really enjoyed. He is a brilliant actor. Perhaps in years to come this will be looked back at as one of the great gangster films made. The soundtrack is brilliant, I love the music in this, Anthony Hamilton etc..

This decision was really tough for me. There are about 10 films which were interchangable for these two picks. I chose these because I think the other films have the best chance of being overlooked later in the draft. It's a long time before I pick again, so fingers crossed!

Maybe I do like chick flicks???

Jerry Maguire (1996)

Jerry_Maguire_movie_poster.jpg

Thing is...is this a chick flick? Because it's sure disguised with sports pretty well! I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but he was very good in this. Cuba Gooding Jr. won his famous Oscar (which apparently ruined his career...), and we saw the first real appearance of Renee Zellweger. Lots of great athlete cameos and some great one-liners. I'm passing up a lot of my higher-ranked movies just to take this one...hopefully it pays off.

NoBonus Pick: The Wizard of Oz (1939)

With "The Crow, Part 2" not being selected yet, I will pick The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The-Tin-Man-from-The-Wizard-of-Oz-Giclee-Print-C12522902.jpeg

Why pick The Wizard of Oz, you say? How about this... this is both the greatest fantasy movie of all time AND the greatest musical of all time. This movie defines fantasy and is an all time favorite for so many reasons... let's see... a green witch on a flying broom (who is eventually dispatched with a bucket of water), flying monkeys, a tin man, the scarecrow, the sham that is the Wizard, munchkins, a good witch who flies around in a bubble, poppies, and those incredible songs... This movie is part of all of our souls, like it or not, as it is both part of most of our childhoods and a huge influence on other films and popular culture.

For my island, I need at least one musical in my collection and why not get the best? Better to get first rate songs stuck in my head than third rate songs. Plus, I am a kid at heart, so I must have this film.

but elphaba was good! she was good!!!!!!!!!

with oz out of the running, i'll have to go with another childhood favorite:

the princess bride - 1987

coverlg.jpg

swash-buckling, comical villains, witty zingers, and true romance. all in all, an enjoyable romp into the fantasy realm. and colombo was in it too!!!

You only think I guessed wrong! That's what's so funny! I switched glasses when your back was turned! Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha...

::falls over dead::

Damn. Assumed there was no chance I would get that one given my priorities, but still, damn.

And I assure you, I'm not the only one saying that.

I will, however, try to ignore the fact that you implied it was a backup choice for Oz. ;)

I was all set and prepared to take Princess Bride with my next pick. I had even begun to think about what I would write about it. Aaargh:mad: That said, I decided to tap into a different genre, one that has yet to be delved into (unless you count Above the Rim). The Sports movie.

The Natural-1984

When I played little league baseball, I wanted to be Roy Hobbs. I wanted to knock the cover off the ball, I wanted to smash the ball into the lights and have them explode like fireworks as I rounded the bases in slow motion and the theme music played. Again, a movie I always end up wathcing when it is on TV and one I definately want on my island.

Godfather....American History X.......Usual Suspects......Die Hard.......??Princess Bride??? I soooo did not have you taking this movie. Great pick though.

And now for probably my favorite comedy ever. This is another Christmas movie pick, but hell, who gives a damn.

christmas_vacation.jpg

Christmas Vacation - 1984

Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid, and Bev Diangelo in their prime, with the hilarious co-starring of a very young and hilarious Julia Louise-Dreyfuss. Like Wizard of Oz above, this classic is in the tops of two categories. Its not only the funniest holiday movie ever (not one of, there's nothing even close), but it is a top 10 Christmas movie as well. It was hard to pick between this and the equally funny prequel Vacation, but I have seen this movie more and appreciate it much more than its prequel. Its another movie I can't go without every Christmas season, and I have probably seen it over 30 times, despite the fact I've only been alive for 18 Christmases.

I understand many people out there aren't going out on a whim an taking every movie each person her recommends. I would just suggest for the few out there willing who haven't seen this, write this movie down somewhere, and when Christmas comes around go out and rent it. Sit down with the family and well, try not to laugh. Then you can tell me about how much you failed later.

Who in the world hasn't seen this one? Honestly?

Christmas Vacation - 1984

I hope you're satisfied. You just ruined Christmas on my island for eternity.

My family's Thanksgiving tradition includes Pumpkin Pies from leftover frozen Jack-O-Latern insides, Street Football at halftime of the NFL games and National Lampoon's Chirstmas Vacation to usher in the Holiday Season.

And you sir, have ended all that! Hallalujah, Holy @#$%, where's the Tylenol?

meaniehead mikki fikki ;)

Who in the world hasn't seen this one? Honestly?

*looks Slim's way*

and Lowen: if you hadn't taken Office Space, Christmas Vacation may have slipped my mind....I guess there won't be Christmas on your island, just like mine will be missing all TPS reports and staplers

A Christmas eve tradition in my house.

(This was released in 1989 and not 1984)

Peter Gibbons or Clark W. Griswold?

Milton Waddams or Cousin Eddie?

Bill Lumbergh or Mr. Frank Shirley?

Jennifer Aniston or Five Minutes of Nicolette Scorsese?

Tough Call.

the princess bride - 1987

I love this movie and had it as one of my alternates. There were too many ahead of it on the list for me to grab it, but I am surprised that it lasted this long.

Also, for the record, this:
never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

is fantastic advice, despite Vizzini's inconceivable demise.
