Not entirely. I was from the beginning pissed off that that little gerbil shot our chances of competitiveness in the foot by letting Reke go so he could go chase his own little boo boo safety blanket in Iggy, and then missed on him. I viewed it as missed opportunity when you had all this local momentum, and then you take a dunp on it. it was insutlting really.
Anyway, I do in fact get tanking, but damnit, we have DeMarcus Cousins here, emerging into his prime. We should have Demarcus cousins and Tyreke Evans both emerging into their primes, but whatever. We have a young star. We're 8 years out of our last playoff appearance. We're really largely beyond the tanking stage of the team's life cycle.
And I have several times hinted at an alternate strategy that I saw out there. And that was to take advantage of all the tanking teams to try to assemble a team of stars around Cousins we could never get in other circumstances. Cousins is our #1. We got him. We just need to get #2s and #3s, and in a year when everybody is looking to lose, we might just be able to do it. Boom. Assemble an instantly in its prime playoff caliber team. I'm not requiring that of the front office. In normal circumstances its not even a rational demand. But this year, under these circumstances, I have seen that possibility, and even floated Rudy Gay and Rajon Rondo as two names who could be Cousins' #2 and #3, with IT off the bench.
The problem is I don't trust Rudy Gay not to be selfish. But he's a real talent if Malone could control him. If he would back off the extra chucking...well here's how you could quickly build a competitive team around Cousins with lots of years left on his contract.
