ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed early Thursday when a minivan ran a red light and struck the sports car they were traveling in, authorities said.

Adenhart, 22, died after undergoing surgery, University of California, Irvine Medical Center spokesman John Murray said.

A fourth person remained hospitalized in critical condition.

Adenhart and three other people were in a silver Mitsubishi that was struck shortly before 12:30 a.m. local time by a minivan that ran a red light and also hit another vehicle, police said.

The sports car struck a light pole, killing three people inside.

The crash took place just hours after Adenhart, after pitching in a loss against the Oakland Athletics. He got a no-decision after six scoreless innings, giving up seven hits, striking out five and walking three in just his fourth major league start.

This is so tragic and sad. My prayers are with his family and friends.

This really sucks. Nick didn't do bad last night for his first Major League start. The bullpen blew it for him (we miss Frankie already), but he looked decent. Then, the very night he gets his big league career moving, he gets hit by someone running a red light. So sad to hear.

Pretty horrible. My heart is out to Nick's family, the Angels and their fans.

How awful. :( My thoughts and prayers go to his family, friends and the Angels fans, who barely had time to get to know him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the injured and the family and friends of the others who died as well.

As a hardcore Angels fan, I truly can't believe this. It's a tough thing for me to accept that a kid who had so much talent and probably a very long major league career never had the chance to fulfill it like he deserved to. Life's randomness is a cruel thing.

It wasn't his first start, he had I believe 3 starts early last season. Last year he had a very poor season in the minors and this year made the rotation due to the many injuries in the Angels starting rotation.

I knew he had appearances, but I didn't realize he had actually started. And during the broadcast last night, Rory Markus kept saying it was his first career start, so I just accepted it.

Anyways, doesn't change the fact that, like you said, he barely got a chance to start his life, forget his career. It really sucks. They're talking about it on the radio all day here. The Angels game for tonight has been cancelled.

it's crazy cause a fan got into a fight at the game and ended up dying. Idk how but he did. And then to have the car accident later with this kid. What a crazy and sad night.

When there's a "suspected drunk driver" involved, it's not an accident. It's murder.

My heart goes out to all of those touched by this tragedy.

This whole situation is weighing really heavy on me. It's the third major hit and run incident (with multiple fatalities) in two weeks in the LA area and this one hit me especially hard because I watched the game just hours before. And someone almost hit me (on purpose) when I was crossing the street yesterday -- on the same street where the other USC student was killed. And then there's the news about the fan dying at a game a couple days ago when he was hit in the head and fell down some stairs. No one knows who did it, the suspects just ran away. It's really scary being out in the world right now. I don't know if it's related to the recession or if I just think it is, but there's been a lot of this kind of thing lately -- random, careless violence. More than usual. Nick Adenhart was 22 years old. So was the guy who hit his car. It's just so sad.

That was either Monday or Tuesday night, I can't remember which.
