Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

26. Or 25. Being near the end of the draft I would rather pick the extra pick period than lose it for "fairness" sake.

And you'll never sell me on Coldplay Dime. :) And I like plenty of mainstream popular stuff for what it is. Never heard a Coldplay song that makes me want to turn the volume up and sing along and hell, I'd do that with Roberta Black, as awful as she is.
OK, I need you to do me a favour. I don't know if you've listened to the song I posted, but I want you to listen to it 4 times randomly throughout the day. Give it a chance. If by the fourth time it's not growing on you then fair enough, I will leave you alone in your Coldplay-less world. But turn up the volume, relax and listen to it at least 4 times. Most Coldplay songs need a few listens to get the best out of them as they aren't as catchy on first hearing.

Anywho, pick coming.

The extra rounds have changed everything for me. I probably wouldn't have gotten to take this band if it weren't for them, but since Brick and Pdx (I think) mentioned an Irish band way back in the draft, I don't want to take the chance that they're taken. Equally there's a good chance no one here has even heard of them, but these guys are the only Irish music band I like. I'm really not into the fiddly-diddly music, but these have so many great drinking songs, I'd feel bad not having them with me. Everyone loves them here.

The Dubliners (picture from when they were young)

If any of you have been to Ireland, there's a good chance you would have heard at least one song from these while on a night out. Little taste of home while on this island (although I suspect people are going to get an image of Irish folk music and leprechauns to-be-sure to-be-sure in every pub etc. from this post - not the case, the Dubliners are more of an exception).

Thanks to the additional rounds, I can finally pick that one band whose absentness from this draft was driving me insane. Thought they'd go in the second or third round, but somehow they didn't. Not sure what the reason for that is, but anyway:

The Smiths

extended writeup when my head stops telling me that I'm a jerk.

Nice pick. I'm probably the only person that's heard all those songs before haha. Irish music is really big where I'm from, where most people (including myself) have Irish roots. In fact, I could probably reel off about 20 bands in the genre that even you probably haven't heard of, but they may only be a local thing. However I was never a HUGE fan of the genre, so I stayed a little closer to my tastes n went with Dropkick

Alright, for this pick I've been considering an Australian Funk band, a Canadian pop/rock duo, an American (although i could've sworn she was canadian as well) Alt Country singer and an American harp player. None of them can be picked in the next round, since that spot has been set in stone from day one. Thus, I'm stuck. Damn. Well, it would probably make most sense to take the band that would brighten the mood the most, seeing as how my island is not exactly short on melancholic, if not actually sad music. However, who am I kidding? How am I supposed to pass up a harp player? Especially a pretty harp player at that.

Joanna Newsom
And in store are dreams so daring
that the night can't stop from staring.
I'll swim sweetly as a herring
through the ether, not despairing.

Go to sleep, you stunning sky;
gently creep cunning by:
A quiet hum is amplified
by your thumb, that you suck dry.

First: Walnut Whales
Favourite: The Milk-Eyed Mender
Why: Someone told me that there was an Alt Folk singer that played harp and that her music amazing. This I refused to believe and said friend convinced me to give it a try. The rest, as they (don't actually) say, was beautiful music. Whether Mz Newsom tells long and incredibly convoluted tales of Monkeys and Bears, or shorter and yet just as beautiful storys of someone quietly falling in love but failing to act on it, I always listen spellbound. Her voice, if unique and somewhat necessitating getting used to, is utterly fascinating and her compositions simply work. One of the few artists, where I can just listen to the music and do nothing else but see the hours fly past.

A bit belated, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in on this pick. Joanna is a local act who grew up in Nevada City, and is actually a good family friend. We were in the same class off and on from 1st grade through high school, and it was really interesting to see the evolution of her as an artist, and person. I know her, and her family very well, and often went to her house for recitals of other local musicians. Growing up, I never thought of Joanna as a popular music artist, more of a trendy/folksy local musician, and it's wonderful to see that she has been able to grow her audience internationally so successfully (popular in Germany huh?). It's pretty inspiring to see someone grow to fame from the start. Wonderful choice jalfa, another example of how you have great taste :).

Yeah, that is who I thought you were talking about after the Flogging Molly pick. So I got one out of two right. Didn't get Alexander's Canadien folk singer, but got the Irish bar band right. ;)

Ok, extra picks mean no more tradeoffs unless I catch a wild hare here (which is likely)... but for now, I'll go with one band I crossed off my list a couple picks ago. Gogol Bordello.

I first encountered these guys when I first moved to Portland. I went to see one of my favorite SoCal bands (who are one of the best live bands I have ever seen) and they were opening for Gogol Bordello. Needless to say by the end of the show I think my favorite live band became my second. These guys are AWESOME. And that's not because they have fancy laser and projection shows, it is just the sheer amount of energy and craziness going on on stage that can make someone who has never heard one song by a band and perhaps prefers a harder brand of music a fan from the first song. They literally had everyone in the building dancing for most of the night. They've branded themselves "Gypsy Punk" but that is just one of those times when you come up with a label because no existing label will do.

Some others in their music video form:
Not a Crime, American Wedding, Start Wearing Purple

Lastly, I don't care if I get this song, it is too awesome not to share:
La Isla Bonita

Wanna wait to see what the NLRB rules here next week, see if that nudges things back into action. If things look dire though, I will indeed fire up Pretty Girls, just because they forced me into it you understand. :p
I was wondering at what point you would have no choice but to, with what I'm positive would be great regret, initiate another draft honoring the female form...

I love Roy Orbison but I had about 5 other people from that era on my list ahead, great pick though. Most people only think of his ballady stuff but he had some fantastic rock and roll tracks too.

I'm innocent!

Pure as the driven snow even.

Its not my fault the fools can't reach a deal -- my hand may be forced. :p

Haha! My singer's better looking than your singer! :p

Shania Twain

Since y'all were just going to leave her dangling...this is precisely the sort of thing I would not have done with 20 picks which I can with 26 (looks like 26 votes outweigh 24 votes?). Actually I still wouldn't have done it despite the attraction of picking up a country artist (kinda) if I had not pulled up a bunch of her songs and found/remembered that her catalog went a lot deeper with songs I legitmately liked than I recalled.

So anyway, Shania. May have heard of her -- sold more records than God there over a 7 year period (actually that's maybe a bad example, as I don't think God has a record contract and so pretty much any of these artists have sold more records than God). Made country purists mad by being Canadien (which I think we can all admit really is pretty foul), shacking up with a rock producer, adding pop licks to her music, and then showing her belly, which is of course sinful and stuff. And that alone might have been enough for me to like her, as pretty much anything that upsets a country purist makes me happy. But turns out the resulting music was a lot of fun too, and since it wasn't MY music she was perverting, I've always been able to enjoy it without artificial qualms. Some very pretty ballads too.

There was a certain sound that my island was missing. I don’t know if I can describe it, but you’ll know it when you hear it: Garbage

Overproduced? Maybe. But I love the way they hit your speakers hard and pure, and I love Shirley Manson’s voice and presence. I was iffy on picking them due to their small catalog, but with an extra 6 picks there’s definitely a spot for them now. It appears that they’ve recently rebanded after their 2005 breakup with an album in the works. We’ll see how that goes, but even if it’s a flop, their first three albums alone are worth putting them on my island.

Years active: 1994-2005, current?
Catalog: 4 studio albums (~3.5h)
Landmark songs: Stupid Girl, #1 Crush, Push It, I Think I’m Paranoid, Shut Your Mouth (NSFW lyrics)
Songs I keep coming back to:
I think this may be the finest album-ender out there. I just love the fade-out.
And another song that epitomizes Garbage with a big hook.

Alright well I'm heading to bed now and there's been no word yet so no point in delaying this any more. Not that this pick will be a popular one or anything, because I'm not sure if these guys are even known outside of Canada. So AleksandarN may be the only one who even knows these guys. Anyway, my pick is:

The Tragically Hip

AKA "The Hip". Like I said, they have a huge following here in Canada but not sure if they're known internationally. So this is probably an unpopular pick, but may expose some of you to their music. Which is really the interesting part of this draft IMO.

[yt="New Orleans is Sinking"]LAZUsCONjIQ[/yt]
[yt="Locked in the Trunk of A Car"]9-WBZMRFFkU[/yt]
[yt="Fiddler's Green"]aoXM95WyJjM[/yt]

I was wondering if they would be picked. I am glad that they were. Man I am upset I did not get in on this draft. :(

One of those bands where I can literally listen to their music and remember exactly where I was back when I first heard it. One of those nostalgic bands for me and they're still making great music.

Ok, since we decided to go 26 instead of 20, I've been debating about taking this group here since they'd be safe until 26 I'm pretty sure. However, they lead nicely into the rest of my picks so let me introduce The Kimberly Trip,A Sacramento, CA band: Hard Geek Pop with edgy guitars and a sense of humor.
. I was pleasantly suprised to find that my friend's band was actually listed on allmusic and made it possible for me to take. :D

For my next pick, i'm selecting a band which is actually a favorite of my wife. Since i'll be stuck on an island without her, the next best thing would be to listen to her favorite band:

Corrs_43.jpg

I was not able to draft REM, but at least i'll get one of their songs

Yeah, I looked at them too -- was heavily reinvestigating them a few rounds back before I ended up taking Kelly Clarkson and came to the same unfortunate conclusion I have in the past -- that while I have these two songs I really like of theirs when they strayed into sunny pop rock with Breathless and Summer Sunshine, most of their stuff just really slides over to bland ballads and middling pop and just loses my interest. If anything I wish they were more distinctively Celtic or interested in playing thier instruments. Just seems a waste to have 4 instrument playing siblings up theie with traditional Celtic instrumets and then end up just using them for occasional accent touches over the same standard pop beat everybody else is using or light background ambiance on the ballads.

P.S. Too bad you can;t take along the videos huh. :p
