Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

For my next pick, i'm selecting a band which is actually a favorite of my wife. Since i'll be stuck on an island without her, the next best thing would be to listen to her favorite band:

View attachment 3902

I was not able to draft REM, but at least i'll get one of their songs

Good pick, was considering them but they wouldn't have made it.

Not usually into love songs but this is a great one:

Side note: Jim Corr is actually a conspiracy nut nowadays, you wouldn't believe some of the crazy junk he comes out with. Really delusional - he has his own website for anyone that wants some entertainment.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
One of my favorite songs:

Oh sure, but that's an old Irish folk tune that everyone covers eventually. Its also an example of more of the type of band I wish they were all the time.

They've just always frustrated me as a group with seemingly wasted potential who I want to like more than I do. But who knows, Andrea has a beautiful voice, but I have no feel at all for the relative chops of the rest of the siblings. And since seemingly every single person in Ireland buys every single one of their albums, or did, their formula seems to be working just fine for them, thx.

P.S. and yes on Runaway btw. Had forgotten that one.

The Corrs were a fairly successful band, but they were never huge in Ireland. They got decent air time and everyone would have known who they were, but to say most people bought their album would be wrong. In fact I'd say they were more successful internationally than they were at home. Irish music isn't very popular here, it's very much in the minority.

I will take my favorite 80's electro-dance group...

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD)

They have the perfect mix of brooding darkness, but are upbeat enough to not come off whiny... love OMD!

My next selection... I have been a big fan since I was in High School of this guy; I will add a little New Orleans to my list:

Harry Connick, Jr.

Great big band sound... great voice, excellent pianist... love the style...

One of my favorite songs of all time by anyone...

And he is one heck of a pianist.

not to contradict an Irishman about his own country, but..maybe you were just hanging with the wrong crowd? ;)

Those multi-platinum numbers in Ireland look really impressive until you realize that a platinum certification in Ireland is 15,000 sales, not 1,000,000 as in the U.S. Proportionally it's about the same in terms of population size, though. "Talk On Corners" sold about one copy in Ireland for every 15 people, so that's pretty solid.

Heh, that's what being six years old during their peak will do to your objectivity. When I was growing up they were never very popular, well at least not among people of my age group. So yes, my perception is obviously skewered!

Don't you speak ill about the Bubbles! He's not assuming, just confident. And a very nice guy by all accounts. And in my humble opinion, a significantly better singer than Mr. Connick.

There I go, blowing my own trumpet again :p
He may be a better singer, technically, but I think Harry Connick is the better musician and has better style/musical taste, but that is subjective.

If this thing had ended up with Bubbles taken early and Harry completely ignored, I might have lost my damn mind. Though that likely is just a sign of my age. And bias. My general obsession with New Orleans (starting at about age 15), and fondness for swing and big band music, meant that Connick was at the top of my musical world for a lot of years. His recent stuff doesn't do as much for me -- has gotten a little overly sentimental, perhaps -- but at his peak he was flat out great. (And managed a sincerity I find sorely lacking in Buble's stuff). Also, I've been lucky enough to see him live twice, once with his big band and once with his funk band, and even fifteen or so years later I think they might still be the two best concerts I've ever seen. Hell of an entertainer in person, and one of those annoying types who over the course of the show plays almost every instrument on the stage obnoxiously well. But... that's an awful long way of saying "good pick."

Also, have intentionally tried to avoid adding supplemental videos to anyone's picks, but have got to in this case:
In other words, the 1992 New York Big Band Concert DVD (source of NoBonus's clips, as well) is worth checking out.

Oh the irony after months of hating everything, it would be one of my mom's favorite artists that makes GGG gooey.

Here ya go GGG:

Lap it up. :p
On my short list for worst movie ever. I left the theater hating mankind and hoping that some sort of Vogon catastrophe would save us from ourselves.

Yeah, that was my next pick. Jerk. Great voice.
I had planned to take her a couple rounds ago but I couldn't let Lennon or The Band fall any more. Plus you already have Cat Power and Joanna Newsom, you have enough sweet female singer songwriters.

I did not know they're already on their fifth album, might've looked more closely otherwise. Love this one:
I have to admit I thought they were at four albums. I should check out their debut at some point.

In honor of the 20th round finishing up, instead of posting youtube clips in here, which I'm pretty bad at getting around to, I just made a couple playlists that contain the clips I would use. I have two lists:

KingsFans Music Draft Short List
KingsFans Music Draft Long List

The short list is one song per artist and right now the long list is three songs per artist (including the ones on the short list). So if you remember who I've taken and want to check any of them out stroll on over to the playlist of your choice. Note that I just put the songs in the order of where I took the artist, so it's not necessarily my favorites at the top or some fancy mixtape style setup. ;)

As a reminder of who I've taken:
Nas
Black Eyed Peas
Lauryn Hill
Genesis
Mos Def
Tracy Chapman
Santana
Outkast
Kanye West
Jewel
Maroon 5
Air Supply
Ray Charles
Janet Jackson
Snoop Dogg
Chuck Berry
Wyclef Jean
Hootie and the Blowfish
TLC
Roy Orbison

As a rule, I don't believe this can be true. At all. And there will (probably) be at least one more addition to that list.

By the way, you clearly are a better person than me for picking the picture you selected, and not one of the more gratuitious pics out there, to get our dear commish behind the pick. Seeing as how I'd have totally gone there.
