Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

My next pick:

The 5th Dimension

Sweet soulful sounds... and Marilyn McCoo! (Oh, that Marilyn McCoo!!!) I love their sound, they cover songs by Laura Nyro, one of the best songwriters ever... born a fan of this group.

As a follow up to my two-part pick, I will take:

The Sex Pistols

Punk rock at it's very best... only one real album, but oh my what an album! Discovered this album in high school... and it was basically THE album of that time in my life...

what music can I pick to remind me of my two year old son, you ask? That I might actually want to listen to repeatedly? Newsboys

Newsboys are a Christian pop rock band founded in 1985 in Mooloolaba, Australia. They have released 14 studio albums, six of which have been certified gold. Currently, the band consists of lead vocalist Michael Tait, keyboardist Jeff Frankenstein, guitarist Jody Davis, and drummer Duncan Phillips.

because, he likes to dance to this:

Jeez this thing is flying now! I know that at least my next pick is safe from everyone, so I think I'm gonna hold off a bit n wait for official word from the commish about the dukes situation, since there was no real resolution there yet. But I'm on the east coast and heading to bed in a few hours so if I don't hear back by then then I'll post my pick rather than potentially holding this up for another night.

Actually no, that would kind of be problematic -- be no way then for a skipped person to ever make there next pick on time.
Sure there would be. As soon as all missed picks have been caught up then the individual's 24 window is restored. So if you miss a pick you can make it up whenever you return. As long as you return and make up that pick before your next one, then all is well. But if your turn reappears before you've come back, it is simply skipped because the assumption is that as long as you have missed picks to make up, you're always "on the clock" anyway.

edit: Oh, and dang it... I thought for sure Lennon was taken already.

I'm all for going deeper. Not so much for the big names, though, I think I'd rather...indulge in some of my baser instincts then.
If this kept going I would do a mix of both. It's just kind of shocking that some of the bigger name artist are still out there at this point.

Alright well I'm heading to bed now and there's been no word yet so no point in delaying this any more. Not that this pick will be a popular one or anything, because I'm not sure if these guys are even known outside of Canada. So AleksandarN may be the only one who even knows these guys. Anyway, my pick is:

The Tragically Hip

AKA "The Hip". Like I said, they have a huge following here in Canada but not sure if they're known internationally. So this is probably an unpopular pick, but may expose some of you to their music. Which is really the interesting part of this draft IMO.

Sorry for the delay, half way through my write-up my computer tweeked out on me.

2 picks left and I've yet to get any country. Figured by the make up of this draft, these guys would be safe but the MCC pick scared me a bit! This duo is real country to me..

Brooks and Dunn

Sorry guys, I haven't been able to log in for a week. I had surgery on my right eye, it was an emergency so I had no time to leave a message or send my picks to someone to post for me.

Brick, can I make my makeup picks now?

The sooner the better. Put them up, man! ;)

As it comes down to the end of the draft, I feel that I have to go with the band that I could least live without. I think my choice has actually answered that question for me: “How can I live without you, if it means I’ve gotta get a job?” - Cracker.

I pick Cracker not so much because I feel that my island needs an infusion of alt-country, it’s more that, as a band, I keep going back to them over and over again. The band formed out of the ashes of Camper Van Beethoven, picking up guitarist Johnny Hickman and hit the ground running with their tongue-in-cheek self-derogatory redneck rock. They got a fair bit of radio play off of their second album and then kind of faded from view, but the good music kept coming...

Years active: 1990-present
Catalog: 8 studio albums (~7.5h), 2 live albums, 2 redux albums (~4h)
Landmark songs: Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now), Low, Eurotrash Girl, Been Around The World, Shine
Songs I keep coming back to:
I can hardly imagine my island without Big Dipper, one of my favorite songs of all time:
And here's something a bit more upbeat:

I hate you!!

I had him for my last pick.
Wow, I don't think I've been told that since high school...lol.

And here I was all set to commend you on your comeback picks..I mean if you are going to be fashionably late to the party, the very least you can do is bring excellent company..
I do hope your eye is okay and that you heal quickly.

lol. Thanks Proph. It's not actually the eye itself, it's the Lacrimal duct(tear duct) that's got blocked and infected. The whole right side of my face was swollen.

Anyway, now I have to think of a replacement pick for Jason Mraz. Great pick by the way.

Satriani and Steve Vai? That's some good island tunes right there.

There's something I want to post w/ Steve Vai, but it includes a band (or possibly individuals) that have not yet been picked. Alas, I shall wait.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Ok, so my list may seem an unlikely place for these next artists to end up -- indeed despite our general preferences in this draft I am surprised they are still available. But I've always had the utmost respect for what they can do and they scratch an itch I've had for vocal harmonies on my island in a major way:

Boyz II Men

Now R&B is clearly not my music. In fact in its modern incarnation as a bad form of synthesized urban pop singing about how I am going to sex you baby, I find much of it vaguely pathetic. But Boyz II Men were something else, featuring nearly perfect vocal harmonies, singing many songs nearly acappella, which is something I love and am glad to have on the island, and turning out some seriously beautiful songs that worked no matter if you were an R&B guy, a rocker, or whatever.

In the early 2000s they lost one of their four original members to health problems (the bass voice) but continued on in diminished form spedning much of the decade doing covers of everything from old motown to modern pop rock and country songs. Some of the covers are quite good, and as with Joe Cocker, Joan Jett, Social D etc. in this sort of draft I consider good covers to be a major bonus point actually, bringing more variety of msuic to my island.
