Tropical Island Music Artist Draft - FINIS

Good pick. I actually was considering them but probably wouldn't have gone with them with my last two. They have some good songs and made actual R'n'B music rather than a lot of the modern stuff that you mentioned. I have someone else to fill my void later though, and I couldn't justify taking Boyz over them.

Womanizer, druggy, and degenerate, but man could he play the blues. Continuing with the blues rock theme I'll add one more legend of the genre to my list. With my 19th selection, I choose:

Stevie Ray Vaughan

I missed out on Jimi Hendrix, but I could live with this rendition also

Another artist who was cut short very young (35 via helicopter crash), Stevie Ray Vaughan merged electric riffs with blues rhythms to great effect. He has a very unique sound that is both catchy, and difficult to emulate at the same time. He paved the way for many current rock/blues bands such as Pearl Jam, and his catalog will be a welcome addition to my island stash.

Here's a homage to his wonderful instrumental pieces, I'm not sure who threw in the scantly clad ladies in the bikinis...;)

I think your characterization of him is a little harsh. he had cleaned up in the last few years of his life and as far as I know, he was no more of a womanizer than any other rock star. Great pick though. he's one of the artists that I've been considering for some time now but just couldn't seem to find the room for. He played the guitar like a man possessed. one of the greatest of all time.

Motownphilly? I'd guffaw, but their music is pretty decent. I'll admit to singing along from time to time, and while rumors exist of me serenading a fair lass outside of her dorm room, there has been no video confirmation of such an event.

SRV - his music has grown on me. Lots of emotion behind the guitar; I love his cover of Little Wing.

Spent a nice chunk of the day going "I don't want another xxx artist, I want more of yyy"... well, ultimately I'm going with another guy who does everything, Mr. Shelton Hank Williams III or simply aka Hank III.

They say talent skips a generation, and this Hank definitely got his grandpappy's voice while inheriting the outlaw spirit from both his dad and grandpa. Hank III has mixed traditional country in the style of his grandfather with punk and metal. This year alone he released 4 albums on one day including a 2 disc country album, a country/metal record, a doom-rock along with an album his former label had held back for 8 years. Similar to the Supersuckers and their "big show" approach, Hank's live shows feature multiple sets of his different styles.

Unfortunately not everything he does is fit for posting here so I'll highlight his more traditional stuff today, and maybe link to some of the more risky material at the bottom.
Honoring his grandpa
And of course you know he does his daddy's best tune:

Other stuff:
Pop Country Really Sucks (this one goes by a few better names as well, unfit for the board though), Long Black Veil, Hellbilly Joker, Straight to Hell, 87 Southbound (a song by one of the artists I bounced back and forth between picking here).

Alright, for this pick I've been considering an Australian Funk band, a Canadian pop/rock duo, an American (although i could've sworn she was canadian as well) Alt Country singer and an American harp player. None of them can be picked in the next round, since that spot has been set in stone from day one. Thus, I'm stuck. Damn. Well, it would probably make most sense to take the band that would brighten the mood the most, seeing as how my island is not exactly short on melancholic, if not actually sad music. However, who am I kidding? How am I supposed to pass up a harp player? Especially a pretty harp player at that.

Joanna Newsom
And in store are dreams so daring
that the night can't stop from staring.
I'll swim sweetly as a herring
through the ether, not despairing.

Go to sleep, you stunning sky;
gently creep cunning by:
A quiet hum is amplified
by your thumb, that you suck dry.

First: Walnut Whales
Favourite: The Milk-Eyed Mender
Why: Someone told me that there was an Alt Folk singer that played harp and that her music amazing. This I refused to believe and said friend convinced me to give it a try. The rest, as they (don't actually) say, was beautiful music. Whether Mz Newsom tells long and incredibly convoluted tales of Monkeys and Bears, or shorter and yet just as beautiful storys of someone quietly falling in love but failing to act on it, I always listen spellbound. Her voice, if unique and somewhat necessitating getting used to, is utterly fascinating and her compositions simply work. One of the few artists, where I can just listen to the music and do nothing else but see the hours fly past.

Easy pick for me. This guy makes real R'n'B music, and has easily one of the best voices in the world. It's effortless. Whenever I need a smooth, soulful voice to listen to on my island, I'll have the best of the best.

Brian McKnight

Extra points for getting a basketball related photo? :p

Seriously, one of the best male voices in the world. A class act as a person too, not like a lot of the current idiots who proclaim themselves R&B artists. All you need to do is listen to this to see his talent, and if you don't know him, please do watch it right the way through:

Here we descend into real obscuredom.
There were 4 groups/artists I absolutely wanted in this draft, two of them (Rolling Stones and Waits) were taken before me in the first round, one were The Fall and here is the last one of my all time personal favourites:

Sun City Girls (1979-2007)

Favourite Album: Grotto of Miracles (1986)
Sample Songs: The Shining Path (from Torch of the Mystics, 1990) // Radio Morocco (from Grotto of Miracles) // Kill the Klansmen (Album title not board-friendly)

This is basically very loose psychedelic folk filled with middle-eastern/arabic influences topped with insane singing and surreal lyrics. One of the most deranged things I've ever heard, and I love it. They have a huge catalogue (more than 50 releases if count EPs, singles and live recordings) and it's mostly barely listenable half-***ed improvisation but when they actually focus they can produce some really beautiful and/or entertaining music. They really have that exotic feel that lots of band desperately search for but never obtain.

With this pick I draft, Jefferson Airplane.

They weren’t the most consistent band in my opinion, or else I would have picked them sooner. But when they were on and everything clicked, it was pure magic.

A lot of people tend to see them as a two hit wonder, as “White Rabbit” and “Somebody to Love” get the lion’s share of attention. And those are great songs, but they have many other great songs, too.

Grace Slick is in my trifecta of greatest female rock singers along with Ann Wilson and Stevie Nicks. Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady are great musicians, too.

The group covered quite a bit of musical ground including folk, pop, and country in addition to psychedelic rock

They were also quite innovative and influential and had an impact on the development of what would eventually come to be known as progressive rock. That doesn’t factor into my pick, but it’s worth mentioning just from an academic standpoint.

Brick asked me to hold off before making my 20th pick because there's something he wants to ask everyone before we proceed.

I can confirm that the question Brick wants to ask, is that can people please hold off on drafting Ricky Martin as he forgot to take him and couldn't live without his music? He also added that he thinks he is sooo dreamy, and would hate not to have his voice on his island to remind him of such natural beauty...

Seems legit.

ATTENTION: BIG IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT/QUESTION

Alright, as for my big question, should be fairly obvious. I'll ask it via PM as well:

Do you guys want to extend this draft for another 5 picks?

We're in kind of a unique position here, not knowing when, or if, basketball id going to start again and thus not knowing when the offseason threads should be wrapping up. I was hoping the idiots would reach agreement last week. Now, who knows. We do still have Pretty Girls queued up to go after this one if necessary, and if we 100% knew they weren't playing until January it would be time to just start that up and go. I also have a basketball related project that I would like to recruit some of the top Kings historian types around here for, but without knowing when the season is going to start its hard to know if there will be time for any of that stuff or not.

So, noticed Henkel and NoBonus hint hinting about adding more rounds, and thought I would ask the question. I know a lot of people, myself included, have built our lists thinking there would be 20 rounds and picking accordingly, but that's why I wanted Rookie to stop before the final round, so we'd all be more or less in the same boat if people do want to extend. If not, no problem at all. I am ready with the playoffs and promise to get that right this time, and I don't want to extend things and have that become a burden to peeps or start to have people lose interest and time out and whatnot. So I'll leave it up to you. Would like to hear from most of you before making a decision if possible. Will need a pretty strong majority in order to push thigns out, because like I say I don't want people to start getting bored and drop out.
