Tropical Island Movie Draft Thread - ROUND 20 FINISHED!!!

Something very interesting has just come to my attention. Haha, this is a sticky situation here after how I just expressed my feelings over this pick and movie, but I got to bring it to everyone elses attention and see how you guys feel. If this has happened before and its been overlooked by myself and everyone else, then I'll just let this go away, but I have to see what you guys feel about this.

Read the following rule, its a rule present in this draft and the music draft (basically verbatim) and has been there since day 1.

24 hour deadline between picks. After 24 hours, the pick advances to the next person. The person whose pick was skipped may still make their pick until the end of the round, but they will no longer have priority.

Then another rule very close to one in the music draft.

If the pick gets back to you before you make your pick from the previous round, you forfeit your pick from the round you missed, and will be an movie short at the end.

I never thought how this is sort of a strange rule for the 1-16 and 16-1 persons. And sure enough, atx missed his first window and then his second (someone even noted that his first 24 was up and to not make the next pick for another 24 hours). After the first pick was up (pick 15.20) round 16 was over. Therefore according to the rule above, his pick (the one he ironically used on Donnie Darko) is void.

Now I know this sounds like a huge ploy for me to get the movie I want, I mean it even sounds like that to me, but I'm asking a serious question here. Should we void his pick, or should I change this rule to where it doesn't affect the book-end drafters as harshly? Because as the rules stand, his 15.20 pick is gone.

Someone pointed this out to me and I just had to see everyone's thoughts. Apologies to atx, I'm not trying to screw you. I wouldn't even draft Darko if I void your pick because that would just be......wrong (well, actually it'd be sweet, sweet justice but....) it would be just messed. Even though you held up the draft 48 hours, it was a holiday, and I think if there were anymore big ones nearby I'd definitely add a rule to stop draft clocks on holidays and holiday weekends.

Man, I should simply not have let it drop.

Given the purpose of such a rule (discouraging deadbets, and possibly discouraging people from storing up picks and then taking 5 in a row or some such), and how its application could easily be unfair -- people picking in the 8/9 slots would have an advantage over those at the 1/16 slots -- maybe best to interpet it as only applying if a FULL ROUND takes place without you replacing it.

Jarmusch is my favorite director, and this is my favorite of his films.

While there's a part of me that feels instant camaraderie with another fan, the part of me that was counting on this being available in a couple of rounds is much more dominant. And much more petty. So... I think I hate you now.

I am actually sorry that I stole your pick since this draft is my least favorite of the 3 I am playing. With 2001 on a different island, I don't even feel like taking any movies with me. In other two drafts I got my No 1's, or at least No 1 b's (the board making my decision easy for me). But you have to shoulder some blame. You could see that I panicked earlier and jumped on Mullholand Falls when you picked Lost Highway. That was close, but luckily we chose different movies from the same director. In Music draft pdx stole Clash and Dead Kennedys to force me to go deep into my punk list.

At any rate, you have a great taste in movies. Shame you can't draft them all that well...

Now, if you guys don't hear from me in 24 hours, call police, tell my family that I love them and Go Kings!

I've no idea what I was thinking. Once you picked London Calling that was a pretty big warning sign. Trust me, I had Clash as my punk-punk choice and DK as my HC punk selection. Had to go to plan B (Ramones) and no DK for my island.

It's that time where I shift gears and start taking my "guilty pleasures", which I doubt are on anyone's list but mine.

For whatever reason, my sophomoric mind could not imagine spending eternity on an island without these, starting with:

Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie - 1996

Since the rules of the draft won't allow me to take the television series, this is a welcome silver medal.

If you've never heard of this, the premise is a guy (and two robots) riff and ridicule terrible movies with sarcastic running commentary as the film plays.

The TV show affectionately called MST3K, ran for 10 years on Comedy Central and later the SciFi channel, gaining a a loyal cult following (with me as a faithful denizen).

While the movie, riffing on This Island Earth, isn't as good as the best episodes on the series, it still has some memorable moments.

And let's face it, even with the greatest movies of all time, after a life time of watching them on cycle, they're going to get old. What better way to extend their "replay value" than to take a page from Mike, Crow and Servo?

Hardly, I've been a fanatic for the series ever since a "turkey day marathon" on comedy central back in '92.

I had it earmarked as my last pick of the draft since we started, but moved it up when I realized my fellow drafter's picks were getting more and more obscure.

I don't mean the series -- I mean that exact movie just popped up out of nowhere last night. Had forgotten they even made a movie version. Thought it might have j9ogged your memory.

My biggest problem with the show was the contrived bits of plot and story they threw in. I would have been perfectly happy to just have a whole show of them talking to the screen, because that's really all I watched for.

That's one of the benefits of the movie. Fast Forward

And as I mentioned, the movie is a faithful adaptation and solid "episode", but it doesn't quite match up to Manos: The Hands of Fate, The Girl in Gold Boots, Werewolf, Hobgoblin, Mitchell, Space Mutiny ect.

Still, good enough.

That should could be depressing at times, though. Far too many of those movies were familiar to me.

Same thing with "Reel Wild Cinema," but that was the most awesome of awesome shows.

Well, I hate to seem like a trend follower again given that last pick, but I've actually had this movie slotted for this spot for a number of rounds now. Ever since the surprise Clash of the Titans pick early in this draft I have been enamored with the idea of taking an old cheesy B-move horror/scifi/fantasy movie with me for a little retro fun. But the problem is that while I consider them a guilty pleasure taken as a whole, I could not come up with one single one which could really bear being watched 100s of times. They are by their nature slight and simple beasts -- part of what makes them so entertaining. So I hit upon this instead:

Tremors (1990)

Not a classic, but one of the most "likable" movies ever made I think -- you have to really dig around to find anybody who really dislikes this movie. Far more fun than scary, its just completely benign and harmless and maybe the best attempt at a horror/comedy yet made. Its connection to my B-movie search is that it is obviously a semi-parody of the whole 1950s B-movie horror tradition, and does a damn fine job both subtly making fun of it, and updating it at the same time. Like almost any successful movie in any genre, what keeps this one so entertaining are all the fun well drawn characters, with Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward in particular real hoots in the lead spots as a couple of uneducated but resourceful handymen battling giant worms to save the isolated town of Perfection, NV (pop. 14). It may have been sullied a tad by three progressively more forgettable straight to video "sequels" (each one bringing back less and less of the original cast), but their mere existence is a testament to the continuing popularity of this cult fav. Its just fun, and I have a feeling may end up having a lot more island lasting power than many "better" movies that would eventually wear out their welcome.

so i was originally not gonna respond to the controversy surrounding my donnie darko pick since i find it so petty and very uh.. interesting that tradepeja had previously only argued in this (and other draft threads) to bend and/or challenge the rules and suddenly he chose to try to apply it in what could be considered shady circumstances but i have to wonder if a decision is gonna be made in a reasonable time frame and also why he and/or this "mystery person" who brought this to his attention neglected to PM me to address this issue. more than willing to move on, just curious what exactly is going on here since no difinitive decision has been posted.

Without addressing the accusations of shadiness (just because I... don't want to go there), I agree with the previous responses in the thread.

Ultimately, I think these drafts were put together as a bit of frivolous offseason fun, and should be approached as such. Your "invalid" pick didn't come much later (in sequence) than it would have in the course of the draft, so I doubt it was much of an inconvenience for anyone. Besides, the circumstances are a bit different for the first and 16th picks than for someone picking in the middle of the round -- missing one pick effectively means you've missed the end of the round and, therefore, don't really have any chance of making a late selection.

I think the pick should be allowed, but that's just my $.02.

Gah, just kidding. I just wanted to pretend I could have it for a sec. I have changed the rule so that you COULD get Donnie Darko, atx. Dammit. The rule now will read as follows:

- If 12 or more picks have been made after any drafter's timed out pick, then that timed out pick is no longer usable and is void.

This still effects book-end drafters a bit harsher than the rest of it, because at 13 picks and up past their first one, they lose both, however their drafting position is an advantage in itself, so they'll have to take this one disadvantage.

On to my real pick:

Wonder Boys - 2000

So I saw this for the first time in film class. It blew me away. One of the funniest, wittiest, and well-thought out scripts I've ever seen. Its got 3 great actors before their recent downward spirals (Tobey McGuire, Katie Holmes, and Michael Douglas) and one before his recent huge surge (Robert Downey Jr.) but they all are brilliant in this one. The characters and story are rediculous but so well-done that its believable.

You have the strange introverted college student James Leer (McGuire), the pot-smoking professor/author (Douglas), the openly gay editor (Downey Jr.), and the cute, smart college girl (guess who). They all affect eachother's lives in weird ways and there are a bunch of strange quirky twists along the way involving things like a dead dog in the trunk, the professors 1000+ page manuscript, a coat once owned by Marilyn Monroe, and stuff even weirder. I would reccomend it for anyone.
