Thought I know this admission is near sacrilege for those in my age group, I think I've only made it through The Karate Kid once in my lifetime.

not sure i can watch this over and over again, but the list felt off without a nicholas cage adrenaline movie in it:

face/off - 1997
439px-Face-Off_%28Movie_Poster%29.jpg

i liked cage and travolta's acting in this flick. i'm even willing to forgive that it was directed by john woo, the one trick pony director.

from wiki:
Face/Off is a 1997 action movie directed by John Woo and starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. It tells of how an FBI agent must assume the physical appearance of his sworn enemy in order to stop a terrorist plot and how that same enemy then assumes his.

It is considered Woo's most successful American film, both critically and commercially. The film exemplifies gun fu and heroic bloodshed action sequences, and has Travolta and Cage each playing two personalities. It was the first Hollywood film on which Woo was given complete creative control and was acclaimed by both audiences and critics as a result. Eventually grossing $245 million worldwide, the film was a financial success.

If the draft board absolutely had to have a "nicholas cage adrenaline movie" I'm not sure that's the one I'd pick.

well, "the family man" didn't have enough explosions for me. :p i think i know the one you'd pick, but it just didn't stand out in my mind for some reason. likely because i am not a fan of his british co-star.

Turn off all the lights, turn up the sound, and pop in, my selection Tron (1982).
445px-Tron_poster.jpg

The darkness in this and contrast in this film is life altering... truly, you watch this in the dark or in a movie theater and you will never experience such darkness during a film. The inside the computer sequences are so dark with flashes of light that it is stunning to the senses.

Imagine filming a movie, blowing up each frame, shining a colored light through the still, and filming each frame again from that still... that is half of the Tron magic. The other half, well, let's just say this is the first major motion picture to extensively use computer graphics... in fact:

"In the year it was released", says director Lisberger, "the Motion Picture Academy refused to nominate Tron for special effects because they said we 'cheated' when we used computers which, in the light of what happened, is just mind-boggling". -from Wikipedia

The plot to this film, in my opinion, is more applicable now as a reality of what could happen than as a fantastic computer world back in the 80's.

Ah, the days when Disney took risks and their movies meant something...

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

Ace_ventura_pet_detective.jpg

Love it or hate it...I realized that The Truman Show was not going to satisfy my need for a Jim Carrey comedy and since I lost out on my favorite of his, Dumb and Dumber, I had to pick up this alternate. This is ridiculous, poorly made, and features some truly terrible acting...but I love it. I can't count how many times I've seen it, but I can pretty much recite the entire movie. It launched Jim Carrey's movie career and grossed over 72 million dollars in the US alone. Given the budget of the film, I'm sure some people made some money on it.

Go ahead...let me have it...I expect to be ridiculed...

No ridicule from me, I loved that movie!

My pick;

No Country For Old Men (2007)
Javier Bardem is absolutely brilliant as the phsyco in this movie. Saw this for the first time yesterday and thought it was a very good film. Deserving of a place on my island to take a break from my Denzel collection.

superbad_bigposter.jpg

SuperBad (2007)
Is this still available? I scanned the lists a few times and couldn't see it so I'm guessing it is. I have no idea why. I think the fact that their are alot of older (relatively speaking) posters here is helping me out.
I think this film is hilarious. A great comedy to nab for my island this late on.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was my next pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back to the documentaries...a funny one this time...

Spellbound (2002)

Spellboundposter.jpg

Not only am I a huge science geek, but I also love spelling. I was eligible for the California state spelling bee in 7th grade but elected not to go...one of my regrets in life. This film follows several kids as they progress through the national spelling bee and highlights their lives and preparation (or lack thereof) for the competition...also a lot of their great personality quirks. The filmmakers chose kids from very different walks of life, so the film is as much about America's diversity as it is about the spelling bee. Great film...not too many people I know have seen this, so if you're one of them, go check it out.

I belong to a cult and our bible is, my next selection, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
The_Rocky_Horror_Picture_Show.jpg

This is the ULTIMATE cult classic (so it is surprising it is still available). Weird? Yes! Cheesy? Yes! Singing? Yes! Dancing? Yes! Transvestites? Yes! Aliens? Yes! Zombies? Yes! Mad Scientists? Yes! Marriage? Yes! Murder? Yes! Cannibalism? Yes! Lust? Yes! Still playing every Saturday night at midnight at theaters around the world? YES! Audiences dressed in costume with props and their own scripts insulting the film? YES! YES! YES!

This film is THE cult classic... is stars a very young cast including Meatloaf, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, and Tim Curry.... Just one of those films that is a part of a lot of people's lives... I will never forget seeing this film in Portland, Oregon for the first and second time on the big screen with all of the costumes, props, and fishnet... just tremendous and fun... EVERYONE should see this film in the theater... everyone!

Go ahead...let me have it...I expect to be ridiculed...

Ridiculed?

I consider that the first, last, and only time Jim Carrey has ever been funny. I was willing to put up with and go with the ridiculous camera mugging for that one whacky character, but grew thoroughly and completely tired of it therafter. Had this one down as one of my alternates for my last few picks if I decided to add in an extra comedy. P.S. the ridiculousness and poor acting is part of what makes the movie funny you know.

Now Tron on the other hand.... :p

Never seen Tron...

Don't get me wrong...I love the bad acting and such, and I completely recognize that's part of the formula of that movie. I just have a lot of friends and family members who hate that movie with every fiber of their being. They just never got on board with Jim Carrey's brand of physical comedy. I just assume there are many people on here with the same reaction to it. Not that I care...there are a heck of a lot of movies on this draft that I don't like...we'll leave it at that...

:p

There's only one Jim Carrey movie that I considered for my list, and it's still available. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was the kind of movie that cracked me up the first time I saw it, but I've had absolutely no need to watch it again since.

If it's still on your list, you had better take that movie. I think I know exactly which one you want...

...and it's mine.

Unless, of course, you're STILL looking to punish me for that whole Louis Prima incident...

It's all yours. It wound up far enough down on my alternate list that it is now mathematically impossible for me to ever take it.

Cool. Actually, since my last posting I thought of another Carrey movie I could see you picking. Either way, I'm safe...

I loved everything about Tron, obviously the lightcycles were the coolest thing ever, but there was plenty of other cool stuff for a young computer geek. Plus I loved the video games and other Tron junk. I still gravitate to Discs of Tron at the retro arcade we have here in Portland.

Forgot to comment on the Rocky Horror pick earlier, but that was nice to see on someone's list. It's a movie that I own but seldom ever watch, so I couldn't justify giving it a spot on my island, but Tim Curry is just pure awesomeness in that film. Obviously in a different class than a stereotypically "great" bit of acting, but his commitment is admirable and it's, easily, one of the most fun to watch performances I've seen.

RHPS: I went every weekend, sometimes twice between my 16th and 17th birthdays, in at least 4 different cities - was always fun to compare different lines in each city, or the first time you'd try one of your own in a new place and the response it got. A lot of fun, but I don't think I went more than a handful of times once I got to college.

I did catch it on Broadway twice, hard to separate the actors from a movie you've seen 100 times but it was pretty fun. I guess it didn't do great so they always brought out special guests - one time was Dick Cavett as the criminologist, the other was Sally Jessie Raphael. Cavett was absolutely hillarious. One had Sebastian Bach of Skid Row fame as Riff Raff, the other had Joan Jett as Columbia, I thought both were slightly miscast there.

Watching it alone though, its rather terrible. I had the soundtrack on my music draft until the revelation that 1950s lps featuring previously released singles weren't "compilations".

Ugh.....I got a PM named "movie draft" and didn't look at it....my bad, wasn't about me being up

Any of you that saw my pick...you can't take it though. I'm calling commish powers on this one :D

slim's got the market cornered on the true kung fu flicks, so i'll go with an americanized one:

dragon: the bruce lee story (1993)
Storyofdragon.JPG

jason scott lee gave a good portrayal of the real bruce lee (just a tad chunkier), and the fighting scenes were superb. i actually like the martial arts in this movie a lot better than the hong kong wire-fu films i've seen, and more than recently acclaimed movies like crouching tiger.

My favorite scene was where they were filming (The Big Boss?) and the guy came out of the van and had an unscripted fight with Bruce... And then Bruce destroyed the film after the fight was over.
