Tropical Island Movie Draft Thread - ROUND 20 FINISHED!!!

It's also Memorial Day weekend. I really wouldn't be surprised if D-Mass was gone for the long weekend.

Yeah, but that is why you can PM your next choice(s) to others if you will be away. The limit is also there to prevent the game from dragging on forever, too....

I'd like to keep the energy of a game moving and not start dragging out too long.

I AM on vacation and in an area of Arizona with limited/no access. I thought if this came up that I would be skipped. I did PM my music draft picks before I left but didn't know this draft was starting. Sorry.

I'll clean this up later, but I'll pick:

ALIENS

I know this will cause Brick some heartache, but I've had my pick stolen so many times in the music thread that I had to act early.

Sorry again for the delay. I won't be back in California until Wednesday evening, so if you all are on fire and this thing gets back to me before then, just skip me right away. Don't wait.

Um, yeah...once it's actually started. I don't think anyone expected it to take off as quickly as it did. But whatever... I was simply pointing out the possibility that some of the people might not be around until this evening or tomorrow. Since the draft order wasn't set until Saturday, I don't see how people on vacation could have PM'ed their possible selections.

But D-Mass has checked in and it's all better now, right?

Alright, we'll allow an exception this time for D-Mass. But can some mod change the title of my thread to depict how the draft has indeed started?

Anyway, NoBonus is away, and he sent me his pick. This comes as no surprise, but I was hoping it'd still be around for me...

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - 1977

He didn't leave a summary, but this movie doesn't really need one. This movie is science fiction. It will be remembered and watched forever, along with (most) of its successors.

this should probably come as no surprise also. i was crushed that shawshank was already taken, and so i must retaliate with some violence.

so i definitely didn't expect this to make it to my pick (almost last again- common theme here) but let's just say you took a huge pep out of my step with this pick. i suddenly feel woosie. anyways, this is seriously one of the best movies ever made bar none. it would not have made it back to you, that's for sure.

I expected to see Godfather pretty quick, and it's one of my very favorite movies, but didn't make my list just because I don't think I'd be able to watch it THAT frequently.

As an aside, I put my list together counting on the thought that at least two of my top three picks would be gone by the time it was my turn. If y'all don't start taking them, I'm going to be left with a REALLY tough choice.

I knew neither would make it to me, but Aliens and Star Wars IV are must haves. I'm still sneaking them onto the island somehow whether they are on my list or not. ;)

Since I'm gonna be on this island, and I will only be able to watch the same movies over and over again my picks will have to be more on the entertaining side and less on the "great film" side. However, this pick I believe fits both.

I own this movie, yet any time it is on TV I will still catch myself watching it whether it just started or whether its nearly over. Best Actor, Best Picture, etc. I could have my picture go out and just have the sound and still enjoy this movie because the music and score are just unbelievable. I could go on and on but the greatness of this movie speaks for itself.

I am thrilled to have this movie "slip" to me at #5.

holeee crap, I'm nearly up....time to put the music list down and get revved up for some movies...After losing Shawshank, I have no idea where I'm going for my first pick...I'm distraught... well maybe that's a little overdramatic but I have no priorities any more...I'm going to grab like this is a shopping spree...;)

forrest gump brings back plenty of memories. and i'll agree, the soundtrack is awesome. looking it up on wiki, these songs were in the movie and didn't even make the soundtrack:

Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" - Pete Seeger
"Love Her Madly" - The Doors
"Soul Kitchen" - The Doors
"Hello I Love You" - The Doors
"People Are Strange" - The Doors
"Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"All Along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix
"Running On Empty" – Jackson Browne
"Hey Joe" - Jimi Hendrix
"Get Down Tonight" - KC & The Sunshine Band
"Let's Work Together" - Canned Heat
"Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree" - Tony Orlando & Dawn
"Go Your Own Way" - Fleetwood Mac
"Hanky Panky" - Tommy James and The Shondells

Man, this was a tougher pick than I thought, even with Star Wars IV out of the way. Funny part was, I was trying to chose between three films George Lucas all had a major part in. Damn, I hope I chose right.

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - 1980

Arguably, and IMO, the best Star Wars. I wasn't around in '80 for all the hype, and of course, for the huge revelation that comes in this movie. But, the fact that it indeed surpassed that hyped, and had probably the most famous reveal scene in movie history makes it my #1 pick. I could go on and on about how this movie and the other 2 originals affected me as a young kid, but I'd probably run out of room in the post.

You'll hear no argument from me. The best SW movie as far as I am concerned.

However with all the rest of the series probably being scooped up, you are going to spend the rest of your life on your island depressed because the Empire is eternally winning. ;)

MBF Selects....

I am dubbing my draft list “life without shawshank…”Using the same criteria someone else mentioned earlier, I’m also going with a list of movies I always stop and watch on TV no matter what….that’s probably my guiding principle for this draft and it may be a safe bet that these would also be movies I wouldn’t get tired of watching over and over…for a good long while on my island. On that note...my first selection is....

12 Angry Men (1957)

12_angry_men.jpg

A study in convictions for this courtroom drama…literally in multiple senses... I loved Henry Fonda in this movie, the way he made the room turn, the steaminess of the room the emotions that played out, the knife in the table, the yelling, the near brawls, the ensemble of actors…..Shoot, I just love everything about this movie.

Well damn if that is not a surprising, and damn good pick.

I had that tagged for the later rounds, figuring it would be overlooked. Then again I have a law degree, so I am SUPPOSED to like it.

That is an AWESOME movie. I saw it in my last year of high school. Government teacher said we had to see it. I remember liking it a lot, but I forgot the name of it when trying to make my list. I would've guessed it would stay longer too though, good idea.

Also, the movie made me change glasses, to ones that don't make those marks on your nose.

12 Angry Men is another great film that's not on my list.

Which is a trend that, maybe, Brick will finally end. I did not expect to have this many of my top choices still available, and I'm not looking forward to deciding.

I was supposed to have a law degree until I paraprofessionally made the realization that I didn't really want one ;) ......but the fondness for legal stuff still stuck around. There may be more where that came from...just sayin...;)

:)

I am beginning to think that with the Godfather out the way, my first pick may be safe afterall. The way this thing is going who knows though at this point.

With 16 people drafting there is no way it would survive until 4th, maybe even 3rd round. If Music thread has thought us anything it is this: Don't wait until later rounds to pick up less known/less obvious masterpieces.

Last of the Mohicans (1992)

Well there were just too many ways to go here, and absolutely no possibility of protecting them all. I expect half my list to be gone before this thing snakes back to me. Not sure if this one would have, but its a majorly entertaining epic. Its lush, beautifully shot, passionate, violent, stars one of the best actors of his generation in Daniel Day Lewis, and across from Madeleine Stowe at the height of her beauty (and acting chops). Now I will have to insist on my DVD player being able to play zone 2 DVDs (Europe) since the director has been a jerk and insisted on his crappy "Director's Cut" being the only thing available in America (as opposed to my own theatrical copy from Europe). But that little quirk aside, this is an immensely entertaining film, works as action, works as romance, fills a ton of niches with only 20 of these things to take.

great flick. i saw this in the threater when i must have been about 10 and it really left an impression on me. only after viewing again later did i realize how great it really was. and day lewis, as always, was nothing short of spectacular.

Man, this thread is slow. Anyways, I'm surprise no one has picked one of the classic movies of all time. I wished I could have participated. It would have been fun.

You might be able to. I seem to remember a couple people that had to drop out, though they haven't made anything official. Stick around, watch the thread, a spot might open for you.

rockmeister, if you're interested you can still have my spot (you got lots of time to choose your pick since i'm #16) either post in this thread or PM me if you want the spot.

I appreciate the offer, however, I'm not logged into KF that often during TDOS.
