Tropical Island Movie Draft Thread - ROUND 20 FINISHED!!!

If you keep deleting my posts for no reason after replying to them, people are going to start to think you're talking to yourself.

Why do "we" need to be consistent in all draft threads? Why can't some of them be different? Who needs to know where they "stand"? Why the hell is this all so serious? I really don't get why we need intervention from the so called David Stern of Kingsfans.com to make sure these threads conform to one another.

I'll say this again, but these are fantasy draft threads.

Fantasy. Draft. Threads.

Where we pick movies or girls or music to take to an imaginary island. For fun. Why does everything need to be so perfect? I really see no good reason why I can't make my dumb little change and see how it goes at least.

This isn't rocket science. Or even science. This isn't anything. Its a time waster. At the very least, lets implement trading in the final part here in order to just see if it would work for the full-time of a draft. It could be our little experiment. No one would have to know.

If you are going to change rules at the end draft then you should of told me before. I hate waisting my time. This is bull**** I am sorry but to change the rules when the draft already started is bull****. Why not mention in the beginning that you were going to change the rules. Really I bet some people would not even participate. If these changes stick then I will not post anything in this thread ever again. THANK YOU FOR WAISTING MY TIME.

Um, I'd put that down as a "No" vote.

Alright, I can perhaps go with bringing it back up when the threads over and putting it to a vote. Its less fun and spontaneous, but its much better than having a perpetual "never change anything about the rules of your thread ever, ever never or we'll delete every post ever even hinting it" rule.

I'll give this one up, reluctantly, for now. How about a mod delete a post that actually should be deleted, like the one above?

I'm sorry an idea I thought would be fun had to cause so much trouble. It truly won't happen again.

Why should we have to vote on a ruling change. This should not even come to a vote. If you wanted a trade rule you should have put one in when this draft started. That way people who did not want a trade rule would have not joined. Now if this rule goes through it changes the whole draft and people who did not want the rule just waisted their time.

Ooooooooookay... I'm going to go on record as being completely lost, here.

I went back and undeleted a bunch of posts that initated the entire conversation, just so nobody else will be lost. Soon as this dies down, I will excise them from the thread to get it focused back upon the movies.

Caught up now.

I'm okay with the idea of opening up a period of time after the draft for those who are interested in making trades, but mandatory trades are teh suxors. I like my list the way it is.

And, even if I didn't, there's no way in hell I'm getting The Matrix or Serenity from Brick.

Trades? WTF is this?

You can have my kung fu when you pry it from my cold, dead hands. Why would I trade something I want to keep? If I didn't want it, I wouldn't have drafted it in the first place.

Wooo...did I miss some hot mess in here...:)

For the record my vote would have been hell no. The twist was silly, to stay polite and supportive, and of no real benefit. It also seems like it got back door brought up earlier in the draft seemingly around the LOTH stuff which I think is why I rolled my eyes when I read the genesis of Aleksandar's ire.

I should check to see when I draft again while I'm here and all this crazy stuff broke out...

EDIT: Ok seriously where are we in the draft? Is it Dime Dropper's turn and he's actually no longer participating?

And in my searching through the thread again to figure that out, I read tradepeja's post about rules and boringness. I somehow missed the nugget with the never ever ever evers in it.

You completely missed the point of everybody else who objected to the rule change in your effort to be so obstinate. If the idea of being different and not so run of the mill was so important this brain storm should have occurred earlier in the draft, like when this one was quickly borrowed from the music draft...almost verbatim. If there is any boringness or sameness, lack of originality to be chastised , one will not have far to look to find the reason for it.

Wow...I missed this mess, too. I'll just make a pick and ignore that it ever happened.

A Christmas Story (1983)

ChristmasStoryPoster.JPG

OK...so this movie has lost a bit of its luster now that it's a marathon feature on TNT/TBS on Christmas Eve. But I still love it. And how many of you can say you saw it in the theater in 1983? I CAN! I was in third grade...the only thing I remember is that my friend and I thought it would be cool to sit in the front row...

...dummies.

to save the commish one PM thread in his inbox, my pre-vote is "no."

this is a "draft" thread, not a "league" thread. you play what you're dealt, IMO.

When I think of gangster movies, one movie and only one movie comes to mind (not that one, sorry Francis) and that movie is my next selection, Bonnie & Clyde (1967)

Bonnie_and_Clyde.JPG

This film is iconic, violent, and touching. It makes me like Bonnie and Clyde and sort of make them heroes, much like they were considered when they were actually in action. You want to talk about influential? Without this film, there is no "The Godfather" or the host of films that copied it. A brilliant love story/mobster/gangster film, just brilliant... also, you are welcome to look up this films overall rankings, but you will likely just get depressed that you did not pick this film earlier.

I was just contacted by dime dropper regarding his picks in a couple of drafts, including this one.

So just a second here, and this will be Dime's #18 and #19 picks, and with DMass and No Bonus already skipped him and having taken #19, it will still be Jerryaki on the snake.

Only one pick left after this. So many movies that I'd love to take along but can't :(. Anyway, after checking over my list, I need to add some comedy.

Happy Gilmore (1996)

I'm not the biggest Sandler fan and his movies are more often "miss" than "hit" with me but this one gets me every time, and its not even Sandlers character that I laugh at the most. Ben Stiller kills me in this movie as the nursing home orderly... "You can trouble me for a warm glass of shut-the-hell-up. Now, you will go to sleep or I will put you to sleep. Check out the name tag. You're in my world now, grandma."
There are also the "WTF?" random moments of the movie that are just hilarious like Happy's "happy place." All in all a good parody on the game of golf.

The fight with Bob Barker was the best

Alrighty, I've apparently thrown my list into the wind and am going by the seat of my pants here.

The Heart of the Game - 2005

heartofthegame_l200606061711.jpg

Given my feelings about Hoop Dreams, I've decided to go with another documentary that's considered "Hoop Dreams for girls." With hip hopster Ludacris lending voice for the commentary this is about a quirky coach, who in his day job is/was a tax law professor, taking over a high school girls basketball team up in Seattle and the rest is an emotionally fascinating journey both on and off the court. One young woman featured in the film like the young men in HD is being heavily recruited by D-I schools but sometimes life throws you a curve ball. Updates on her now say that she's trying fulfill her dream to make it to the WNBA by way of a college in Canada. You'll have to see the film to understand why she's had to take this route. Or they'll have to make another film to follow her as she tries to make it to the pros. It's not about girl's basketball and whether or not you're predisposed to like it or not, it's about sports, competition and learning about life and team. It's a great way to spend time, and since I spend a lot of time watching sports - it's a natural fit for an island. That I happen to like women's basketball...multi-bonus. :)

Hmm..have 3 more "really wants", and only 2 picks to get them. And 2 more "would reqally like to have toos" beyond that. Which sucks -- I need a bigger island. But finally decided that taking this one now would give me maximum flexibility when it comes time with my final pick:

The 40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

An unpredictable mixture of shock scenes, outrageous dialogue, bizarre characters -- very entertaining, and thankfully completely willing to offend anyone and everything (a hallmark of good comedy for me). This movie was not perfect -- there were some dead spots, some misses. And after watching some of Apatow's drippy screechingly unfunny work since, I can't help feeling that he might be going the way of the M. Night Shyamalan. But for all its flaws I found this one, his opening salvo, perhaps the best raunchy comedy since There's Something About Mary. Not sure I really needed more comedy on my island -- I not only have two big ones, but a number of my smaller picks are quite funny hybrids (Tremors, Clueless, Serenity etc.). But its going to take a lot of laughter to get through eternity marooned on some crap island, and so I am loading on up.

mmm, nice pick. But what movies other than that one with Owen Wilson has Apatow been directly involved with that haven't been funny? I can't think of any.

With the draft winding down I've gotta make my last picks count.

So I need a movie with a creative plot, memorable music, sharp comedy

... and All That Jazz

Chicago - 2002

There's a great ensamble cast: Catherine Zeta-Jones is perfect as Grace Kelly, Richard Gere works well as the quick-witted, cold, calculated showman Billy Flynn, even Renee Zellweger in her typical doe-eyed, 14-year-old-esque squeaky and annoying self is ideal for the role of Roxy Hart - a main character you're supposed to paradoxically like and dislike at the same time.

Plus Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly and Taye Diggs add some depth to the supporting chracters (Even if Diggs is little more than an announcer)

There's also a little social commentary about crime, the press, celebrity and fame, but the movie covers up any attempt at pretension by making fun of itself with sly humor and over the top sets and situations.

Of course, what stands out most is the music, with its signature All That Jazz, and additionally: Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle, When You're Good To Mama, Mr. Cellophane, the list goes on.

But unlike other musicals, which have people inexplicably breakout into song and dance, Chicago actually explains it all with the overactive and child-like imagination and borderline insanity of Roxy.

Glad my island's now a whoopee spot
Where the gin is cold, but the piano's hot :D

good movie. surprised it lasted so late. and 40 yr old virgin>>>>>> knocked up times a trillion IMO.

Knocked Up is one of the few huge comedies I've seen that didn't even make me so much as chortle. Usually even the comedies I don't like can get a few shock laughs out of me, but...

Chicago - 2002

This is a movie I own, but was never on my list. I think that where it succeeds it's absolutely wonderful, but where it doesn't... painfully bad in spots.

This, of course, is not helped by the fact that Richard Gere and Rene Zellweger are two actors that I just detest.

My turn to pick an Apatow movie. IMO it is his best yet.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

This made me laugh so many times that a little pee almost came out. I know too much info. But I have not laugh so hard in years. If you have not watched it yet rent it or better yet buy it. It is worth it.
