he needs to go back, refine his game and put on some weight.
It would make sense for Rubio to go back to Spain so that he can earn enough to pay off his buyout.
I do not think that he is whining now. He wanted to play in NBA - yes. But also he wanted to play in THE right spot.
His only option now is to either play for Minnesota or not play at alll in the NBA unless they give up his rights, which I'm willing to bet they're in no hurry to do. The whole idea of him having to buy out his existing contract is irrelevant. He wanted the best of both worlds but his agent or whoever advised him on how to manipulate the whole interview/workout proces, made a very big mistake. Much like Bonzi's agent did a few years back.
I'm pretty sure Rubio or his handlers knew the pressure they were putting on teams by not doing workouts. He rolled the dice and crapped out. It's no one's fault but his own IMHO.
I wish him luck in Europe. If He doesn't reach some amicable arrangement with the Timberwolves the only way he's gonna compete against US athletes is in the Olympics in four years.
David Kahn is trying to out incompetent his predecessor in record time.
Reading through all the post-draft news and analysis (just type Ricky Rubio in google news to see what I mean), it appears to me that team Rubio is more concerned about Johny Flynn pick then weather or marketing opportunities in Minnesota. Quite clearly, they want to sit down and get guaranties of playing time, since this is a team that Rubio/his people had no contact with and as much as you don't draft PG #5 to stick him on the bench, you don't draft PG at #6 to stick him on the bench either.
http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/60284/20090702/rubio_will_stay_in_spain_for_two_seasons/According to a report from El Periodico, Ricky Rubio has decided not to come over to the United States to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves and will remain with DKV Joventut for the next two seasons.
Sucks for the T'Wolves, but they still own his rights. DEpending on how Rubio plays in Europe, that could become a more and more valuable asset to the Wolves.
I think the Kings dodged a bullet. Yes he probably would have come over if drafted by the Kings.
But... he is not hungry. Not hungry enough anyway. So I don't want him. I want the guy who smoked all the other players in the workout, that's the one I want.
I agree. He'd actually be playing for almost nothing, if he came over now. I wonder how many here would work at a job for free that didn't really meet their goals for their future. You really can't compare his desire to come to the NBA to anyone else's, because no one else has to pay the amount of money he does to play in the NBA.
The Minnesota Timberwolves' top draft pick, Ricky Rubio, 18, will remain in Spain to play for his DKV Joventut basketball team for the remaining two years of his contract rather than try to move to the NBA this season, El Periodico reported today.

I though I read that Rubio's buyout is actually higher next year?
Looks like he's staying in Spain for 2 years

Thats what the T-Wolves get for not trading him to us for a 2nd round pick..
But seriously... I don't understand what Minnesota's reasoning for all this was. It would have been so much more beneficial for them to draft a player instead of rubio to play at the two spot, maby stephan curry, Derozan, Henderson, or Terrence Williams... They also could have usedd that #18 pick to draft another need... I don't understand how you can put yourself in such a good position to rebuild and pretty much throw it away.
Actually, I don't fault him either. I'm sure he was really disappointed, but sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to. I don't think any of his agents have done him any favors either. I think he needs some time to grow up and get out from under all his "handlers," so he's better equipped to make his own decisions. Remember Peja finally defied his father's wishes to come over to the NBA when he did.If you simply look at his rookie contract, yes. However, the amount of money he would make in endorsement deals would be more than enough to handle his buy out.
Kids only 18, I don't fault him for playing out his European contract. He wanted to test the water and see if he might land in a better situation. Minnesota was not a better situation for him at this time, so he waits. Thats his right and Minni knew that was a possibility when they drafted him.
