Nene

I know Kiki stared down Thorn last year, but this is different. First, after trading 3 first rounders, I don't think they can move anymore picks for awhile. If I am not mistaken you still cannot trade consecutive first round picks.

Second, Nene has made it plain he wants to start. He knows his payday is coming next year, and he needs starter minutes to increase his value. And as others have already stated, the Nuggets have $210 million worth of PFs already.

Third, despite what Nugget fans will say, they are in more of a win now mode than they realize. Their core guys are no spring chickens, and their cap is trashed. With the exception of Carmelo, their core is in their prime right now. They get their lineup set and they are battling the Suns and Spurs for the next 3-4 years, especially with that homecourt. With the salaries they are already carrying, and Carmelo due for his extension in a year, they are going to be bleeding young talent for the forseeable future regardless. Now, our team is arranged similarly, only with worse talent and no budding producer like Nene. So, there's that. But the Nuggets are on the rise while we are on the decline. They are at that decision making point where they have to ask themselves if they are going to make bold moves in order to shore up holes for a possible championship run. And is Cat the guy? I would say no, but I also wouldn't call for Kiki's head if he pulled the trigger.

Furthermore, what happens when the NHL gets back on track? From an owner's standpoint, the Nuggets need to keep getting more wins and better playoff position in order to maintain interest in that city. The Avs OWN Denver. The Broncos are huge, but the Avs OWN it. I lived in the area for four years, and hand to God you cannot even watch an NBA playoff game in a sports bar until the Avs are eliminated from the NHL playoffs. Very frustrating.

Last year Martin was a restricted free agent so this scenario is a little different. Maybe if we gave them a first round pick(to replace one that they lost) along with Cuttino they would do it.

Here is an interesting interview w/ Nene:
http://www.nba.com/nuggets/news/NeneBrazil_030509.html

With the exception of your first game and your trip to the All-Star Weekend, what was your most exciting game?
Nene: "Oh, versus Sacramento. At Sacramento (April 11). We lost by two points (105-103), with a little mistake at the end of the game. That was definitely the most exciting game of the season."

Who was the most difficult player to guard and who guarded you best?
Nene: "There wasn’t a specific player. Every time I’m going to guard a player who is not well known, or who the media doesn’t talk much about, it’s difficult, because he may get on the court and score 50 points. And it’s always difficult to face double teams."

Who is the player you have the best relationship with?
Nene: "It’s Juwan Howard. He taught me so many things. And I still have a lot to learn from him. I hope he will stay with the team next season."

Juwan Howard recently told you that you remind him of Chris Webber when he was younger. Are you proud of that?
Nene: "For sure. I’m very proud of it. And to hear it from Juwan, who played with Webber in college (at Michigan), it’s a great compliment."

Great, now half the mebers of this website will be against this trade now.

I have no problems with it as long as we get rid of him on time (before a major injury and signing a max deal)

yeah, that was some of what I started to see in the last year that was kind of eye-opening. Don't think he's as good, of coure. Probably less physically gifted. But he really began to show some nifty ball skills (passing, dribbling etc.) to go wiht that banging post game. You could see the potential for an exciting player there -- lot of talent. I still haven't quite forgiven him for that asinine primadonna namechange thing, but the game is blossoming.

I think it's more of a nod to his nationality than an egoistic thing. Remember Pele?

Like I said in the other thread if LA loses Simmons that mean they could go after Mobley with that added attention might force Denver into a sign and trade to get Mobley since LA could sign him out right for more than the MLE. I could see a Nene Mobley deal happening now.

hey, I like that. A positive take on having the Clips after Mobley. :)

Denver is also running out of serious options at OG. Might be Mobley or bust for them.

Mobley doesn't really seem to be someone Donald Sterling is going to open the purse strings for. If the Donald wasn't going to pay up for Simmons why would he pay up for Mobley?

It sure seems as if Mobley's value has gone above the MLE, which could be good for the Kings and the Denver trade. However, the Wizards are under the cap, they have a gaping hole at the 2 and could sign Mobley outright. That makes me nervous.

I think the X factor is Karl's semi infatuation with Mobley.

However, it seems odd that Kiki would come out and say they were not going to trade Nene and then deal him. Not unprecedented, but just odd that he would go public at all if his true intent was to deal Nene.

It is same as LA going after him. If you think about it with money being equal he probably go to the team who has a better shot at winning it all and Denver is better than those two teams mentioned

I've liked the sound of this before, and I like how it sounds more and more likely. LA and Washington will make a play for Cat, and Denver will be goaded into making the deal. Cat should prefer Denver, for reasons stated by Aleksander. I don't know if Sterling's push would be all that serious, he's never been worried about sitting on unused cap space...

If Finely goes to the Nuggets, THIS DEAL IS DEAD!

Yep. Gotta root for Phoenix to pull it off with Nash maybe as a recruiter. But they may be feeling the burn if they have to max out JJ, and have already added Bell. Maybe Detroit or Miami will come swopping in and help us out. Both could use a shooter.

Obviously. Hopefully Dallas drags that out long enough that Denver gets tired of waiting.

Well, apparently denver wants to make a decision on Cat in the next 5 days because of a buyout provision in Lenard's contract that expires on the 14th. So if everybody can just hold off for another week, we amy still have a shot, and maybe Denver gets a little nervous up against the deadline and makes a move. Maybe. (still hard for me to really see them doing this, just because i would not myself, but I'm hoping).

Maybe there is hope after all

Michael Finley, Dallas Mavericks

Status: Amnesty buyout candidate for unrestricted free agency, turned 32 on March 6 and is entering his 11th season

2004-05 numbers: 64 games, 36.8 minutes, 15.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.6 assists, .427 FG; .407 3-point; .831 FT

Suitors: Detroit, Phoenix, Miami, Chicago and several other contenders

Final destination: The new CBA will allow the Mavericks to get him out of the luxury tax zone, pay his contract and allow him to be signed on the cheap. He could very well end up back with the Suns, just like Steve Nash, or even go home to Chicago. But Pistons president Joe Dumars can be very persuasive, so I'll go with Detroit.

I don't think we are getting Nene. Nuggets won too many games with the SG rotation they had to give up Nene.

Although it would me damn nice to get him.

I have to agree with you forlorn. If i'm the nuggets, i wouldn't give this kid with huge upside that adds tremendous depth for an undersized off guard that is only looking to get his when he's on the floor.

+ This year they get Lenard back and they add former ACC player of the year Julius Hodge to all of this. They pulled it off last year(when Karl came in) and this year they are already in better shape. Even by not doing anything conserning their 2-guard "problem" the Nuggets are at LEAST a 45-50 win team next season

The Nuggets would be stupid to make this deal. But as a Kings die hard, I'm praying to god they'll cave

Again, I think if there is any hope of it happening what will tip the scales is the reality that Nene is not going to be happy without a lot more minutes and a lot more money spent on him. Talent for talent? Not unless they are fools. But now, let's get finances involved, and all of a sudden strange moves begin to take place.

That and the possibility that Denver feels the pressure to get someone right now rather than waiting til the season or after next season. If GP can sweeten the pot with a first rounder plus Cat then that may get it done. Does anyone know if the Kings are owed a first rounder from another team in the upcoming years?

Owed draft picks from someone else, that would be new. It seems like the Kings have thrown around draft picks like the picks were hot potatoes or something.

I do believe the Nuggets will be balking at Nene, and you have to ask how much better is Cat than the best guy they could get through other (non-Nene) means. But a couple of things:

1) Can the Nuggets keep Nene happy and afford him after next season? Obviously their fans would like to keep him, as would I in their shoes -- part of what makes people think of them as dangerous is their deep and talented frontcourt. But if he's not happy coming off the bench (and he's not) and he expects to be paid like a starter/major payer (and he does) Denver might be forced to do something with him no matter how much they like him. Not as simple as "we want to keep Nene". Obviously they do, but may not be practical to keep him and so they use him to patch their OG hole with an established starter rather than have a guy not happy about not starting angling for more money than they can pay him.

-- flipside of that argument is if they can hold onto him for another couple of years, sooner or later Camby will be getting old and you slide Nene in there, But hard to sell a kid on that sort of timetable.

2) if they are reluctant, we might be able to coax them into it but taking Nene, Lenard AND Najera, and trading them back a piece along with Mobley. An ending contract such as Tag to give them cap room (Najera has a big/long contract) or maybe a post guy such as Corliss or something to help replace the loss of Nene. And of course there are always picks.

Anyway, unless they are 100% sure of Nene's spot with thie future team and have a plan on how he's going to end up starting for them in the fairly immediate future, it might be doable.

personally i dont think nene will be in denver within a year. however he wont be traded this summer.

right now nene is happy and wants to stay but when the time comes and he wants a star contract we wont give it to him IMO>

The nene trade is the best trade available for us right now. We gotta do the trade. I'm not saying its the best trade we could do, but it makes a lot of sense right now. The nugs need the sg and we need big men, so why not do it. Right now, I'm not even worried about his stats, but the stats that brick brings up are very interesting. He seems like he has a lot of upside and at 22, we can't pass this trade up. Also, those stats of him filling in for camby are very interesting as well. I think if veshon is throwen into the deal, then we will have more sg's then we need and I think one of them will be thrwon into another trade either down the road or even this summer as a lot of changes are set to occur. I think that either kevin martin or veshon would go and garcia would stay as he seems like more of a future 2 guard in the nba, imho. It should be a very interesting offseason nontheless.

i do hope you realize a nene-mobley trade never existed.
