Kings Summer League Info/Questions/Discussion (merged)

well..

1) Hawes shot 4-16, which is pretty awful for a big, but it really wasn't as bad as all that. Showed some variety and feel for the game, inside and out (looks comfortable shooting jumpers wiht range, if not hitting them), and simply wasn't making his shots. Somewhat reminscient of Yi against us the other night actually. Man defense was solid, but was playing aginst awful competition (Visser does not look NBA ready, and nobody else was anybody). Rebounding continues to be a "?" wiht only 6 more tonight in 30+ against scrubs. He has not really looked too slow to get them, nor too weak, he just doesn't. Obviously must be because he is playing next to Justin, because as everybody knows if you play next to a good rebounder you must inevitably suck.

2) Cisco was at it again and pretty dominant (as well as sporadically out of control of course), only this time damn near hurt himself, and then damn near hurt a couple of the Wizards. Its like a 6th grader coming down to play ringer against the 3rd graders. I might well say that whatever he;s out there trying to prove to coach, he's proved, and then sit him down. Its like Kevin or Ron last year. An opportunity to get hurt, and while Cisco will have all of training camp to impress the coaches, this is the only shot most of the rest of these guys are going to get.

3) Justin was back at it as well. There was no size or strength inside to check him, but his success was still largely due to him just being hungry and playing harder than his opponents. Has definitely bulked up too. Not 260, unless everybody currently listed at 260 in fact weighs 300, but did not stand out for being skinny, and if you did not know his history you would not have remarked on his build at all. Could easily be up in the 230-240 range, which is generally big enough for a smallish big.

4) Shakur played solidly donw the strecth of this one. Under control, set people up. Nothing dazzling, but looked like a real PG.

5) Watkins was pretty solid again. Meat and potaties and I don't know if its enough to get a camp invite, but he;s solid at the things he does.

6) Donta Smith scored a lot of points, but I still wasn't overly impressed. Sumemr league scorer = so what. A few nice moves, a few forces, did not get any feel for what was his bread and butter.

7) I missed Douby's early stint. When he came back later to run some point he did ok. Just making the expected pass.

8) Pooh was better this time out in limited minutes.

9) Those announcers...were clearly on drugs. I'm thinking ecstasy -- they just loved everyone. They loved all of our players no matter what they did, all of the other team's players no matter what they did, they loved each other, the guys in the booth. They loved the guys they interviewed..heck, I'm more than a little worried they snuck in a little loving for me in there somewhere. And you know what? They love you too.

10) Reggie gets an F for coming on and talking about his plans (and our "need") for making the playoffs next year. His comments about Brad were interesting though, and either alarming or refreshing. First, he started off talking about Brad like he was definitely going to be back and we were even going to run the team around him (oh yay! ), but then he switched gears and sdtarted talking about the fact that Brad was fat and out of shape at the moment and if he wasn't up to the job... Which actually again might mean he's coming back, because trashing your own player who could be up for a trade isn't really bright. The whole thing did make me wonder how much he and Geoff are talking/on the same page. And if they are...crap.

If I'm playing next to Justin Williams I may just very well choose to slink back in the corner and suck because today you saw what happens when you try to board next to him. You nearly get your arm ripped out of it's socket! Good thing Cisco was OK.

Keep in mind that Williams has one more year "at the next level" even tho it was D-League. And Williams played 3 full years in college vs. only 1 for Hawes. That said, Hawes, as we all know, has the offensive skill set and needs to improve movement and positioning for rebounding. Williams on the other hand, is a leaper, rebounder, shot blocker/changer and........ and ...... that's it!! a 2007 version of Michael Stewart in 1997: 2.4 blk/gm and 7 reb in 20 min/gm!!

Two totally different games. Hawes is a natural center. Williams is a defender at the 4/5 but not either really as he has no offensive game yet beyond 6 ft and is a very poor FT. Not good if you are fighting for rebounds and expect to get fouled a lot. But playing with Hawes is a good pairing at this level as the compliment each other. Whether that translates to the NBA game.... well we'll see come training camp.

The Kings play the last game of the summer league, 7:30pm sunday night vs. the Clips. By then its likely we only get verifiction of what Williams is but not what he can be at the NBA level. Hawes we know more about what he is and what he can do. Now we need to see if he can step up the defense.

Nice assessment. But I haven't seen the defensive liability in Hawes. Of course it may be revealed in preseason, but as of right now, he is far from a liability. From what I've seen, when Hawes and Williams both go after a rebound, Williams beats him by about 1-2 inches. I mean it is really close. Hawes has bad positioning and bad technique which will both undoubtedly be improved. Also, Hawes needs to put about 15 lbs. of muscle in his legs, and about 15 lbs. of muscle in his upper body.

In terms of shotblocking, Hawes blocked 2 that I saw yesterday, and he only got credit for one. He altered a total of 3 shots, and I've said before, if he can alter 3-4 per game, then that will be just fine IMO.

Hawes is a long term project. His discrepancies will definitely be exaggerated at the next level, but I don't expect him to fix everything before he even plays his first real NBA game. It is an ongoing thing. He needs to get stronger, he needs to improve rebounding, he should try to become a better shot-alterer, and he needs to continue to do the things that he does well - scoring and distributing. From what I've seen so far, there is no reason why he cannot be a complete player and a future star for our Kings.

Does anyone know if this is gonna be on nbatv? Kings.com says it is, but when i check my program guide it says the monarchs game!
