Kings Summer League Info/Questions/Discussion (merged)

It sucks that Spencer had a bad game but he looked kinda tired and it's just summer league+we already saw how much talent he has so its nothing to be worried about IMO.

JWill had some really nice blocks. I like Shakur a lot as well. Cisco was a monster.

Hawes had some bright spots in this game but overall it was a disappointing performance IMO. His jumper wasn't falling but he still settled for it and that's disappointing but there were instances where he wasn't getting the ball in the post. His rebounding, well he was aggressive and going after them but it's like he needed some super glue to hold onto them. His defense was solid, very active.

His conditioning and strength should be his no.1 priority this offseason.

Doesn't anyone realize this kid just turned 19 in April and at this time last year he had just graduated High School  .

This kid has some talent and you can see it out on the Court. His ability to score with either hand in the low post is pretty awesome. I'm excited to watch this kid develop.

I wasn't impressed with Garcia's decision making today. He tried to thread the needle on too many passes, and ended up turning the ball over on many of them. 1/2 A/TO ratio.

Shakur, however, ran the point beautifully. He is a solid ballhandler and controlled the tempo well. 5 assists in only 22 minutes, plus only one turnover. He just needs a jumpshot to be an NBA calibur PG backup

Hawes slowed way down today. WELCOME TO THE NBA ! its always fun to see the college players go from having timed practice hours and much fewer games. get to the NBA and have much longer practices and play so many more games. you can tell hes outa real game shape. Like Oden, KD, and the other bigs. good news is once he gets his endurence back i think he will look more like he did in the first game. and his shots wont be dying at the rim.

Williams is a beast and im pumped on Reggie saying he wants to help Williams become a more balanced player. Wow if he could shoot just the mid range jumper that would be scary.

Garcia looks solid and much improved from this time last year. Hes still outa control. but maybe with more mins he will slow down just a tad.

If we dont resign Price, Shakur will be the man. although i was happy with Price and his growth. he played well at the end of the year and his 3pt shot/ jumpers were starting to go in. it would be tough seeing Price go if it did happen.

Best part of the game, Reggie saying Brad Miller is "QUITE OVER WEIGHT." wow Brad your the worst pro athlete ever. at least shaq was fat with lots of muscle. your just soft!

I love how everyone keeps saying that Brad will be a great mentor to Hawes, they emphasized that on the broadcast. My question is...with what? Conditioning? Brad could stand to learn a few low post moves from Hawes. Anyway here are my impressions of the game.

Spencer Hawes: Was tired and frustrated for most of the game. When he fought for position and was patient with the ball he was fantastic and demanded a double team every time, sometimes that didn't even stop him. His passing was also very crisp as advertised. However that was only a small portion of the game, he forced (and rushed) jump shots almost every time he got the ball in the second half. He also seemed very eager to show his point guard skills but had the butter fingers today. He did seem to fight harder for rebounds, but couldn't seem to hold on. Defense was surprisingly solid though.

Justin Williams: THE BEAST! This guy belongs in the NBA and deserves serious bench minutes. As Theus said, if he learns the game he can be a dominant player. Again probably had 2 to 3 more blocks that didn't get recorded.

Francisco Garcia: CALM DOWN BOY! He might be the best player at summer league and is determined to show that he can do unhuman things out there...the problem is that he is human. The good news is that he really is at a different level than everyone else, but the bad news is that he is more wild than ever. Probably just a symptom of being the man here.

Shakur or Jeter: I actually liked Shakur very much in college, a pretty good scorer but I had no idea he could run the point like this. But on the other hand I knew Jeter could run the point, but he has really developed his scoring abilities in the NBDL last year. This one could go either way and I'd be happy with either.

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
well..

1) Hawes shot 4-16, which is pretty awful for a big, but it really wasn't as bad as all that. Showed some variety and feel for the game, inside and out (looks comfortable shooting jumpers wiht range, if not hitting them), and simply wasn't making his shots. Somewhat reminscient of Yi against us the other night actually. Man defense was solid, but was playing aginst awful competition (Visser does not look NBA ready, and nobody else was anybody). Rebounding continues to be a "?" wiht only 6 more tonight in 30+ against scrubs. He has not really looked too slow to get them, nor too weak, he just doesn't. Obviously must be because he is playing next to Justin, because as everybody knows if you play next to a good rebounder you must inevitably suck.

2) Cisco was at it again and pretty dominant (as well as sporadically out of control of course), only this time damn near hurt himself, and then damn near hurt a couple of the Wizards. Its like a 6th grader coming down to play ringer against the 3rd graders. I might well say that whatever he;s out there trying to prove to coach, he's proved, and then sit him down. Its like Kevin or Ron last year. An opportunity to get hurt, and while Cisco will have all of training camp to impress the coaches, this is the only shot most of the rest of these guys are going to get.

3) Justin was back at it as well. There was no size or strength inside to check him, but his success was still largely due to him just being hungry and playing harder than his opponents. Has definitely bulked up too. Not 260, unless everybody currently listed at 260 in fact weighs 300, but did not stand out for being skinny, and if you did not know his history you would not have remarked on his build at all. Could easily be up in the 230-240 range, which is generally big enough for a smallish big.

4) Shakur played solidly donw the strecth of this one. Under control, set people up. Nothing dazzling, but looked like a real PG.

5) Watkins was pretty solid again. Meat and potaties and I don't know if its enough to get a camp invite, but he;s solid at the things he does.

6) Donta Smith scored a lot of points, but I still wasn't overly impressed. Sumemr league scorer = so what. A few nice moves, a few forces, did not get any feel for what was his bread and butter.

7) I missed Douby's early stint. When he came back later to run some point he did ok. Just making the expected pass.

8) Pooh was better this time out in limited minutes.

9) Those announcers...were clearly on drugs. I'm thinking ecstasy -- they just loved everyone. They loved all of our players no matter what they did, all of the other team's players no matter what they did, they loved each other, the guys in the booth. They loved the guys they interviewed..heck, I'm more than a little worried they snuck in a little loving for me in there somewhere. And you know what? They love you too.

10) Reggie gets an F for coming on and talking about his plans (and our "need") for making the playoffs next year. His comments about Brad were interesting though, and either alarming or refreshing. First, he started off talking about Brad like he was definitely going to be back and we were even going to run the team around him (oh yay! ), but then he switched gears and sdtarted talking about the fact that Brad was fat and out of shape at the moment and if he wasn't up to the job... Which actually again might mean he's coming back, because trashing your own player who could be up for a trade isn't really bright. The whole thing did make me wonder how much he and Geoff are talking/on the same page. And if they are...crap.

These points really interest me.

As far as Cisco is concerned, having we pretty much been saying the same thing since he came into the league? Is he ever going to take it down that necessary notch to remain in control?

I sure like what I'm hearing about Williams. I guess he's been working very hard at the practice facility, too, and has really impressed some people with his dedication.

I have another question about Shakur... does he look to have skills that can be honed into being successful in the NBA?

I think Watkins deserves an invite. And Douby was doing a great job shooting in the first quarter, then in the 2nd he set up some nice plays for some of our scrubs who failed to convert, but I think Douby should continue to develop his ballhandling.

Looking at our depth chart, is there a reason why we couldn't have both Price and Shakur? (Barring any trades of course)

Guards: Bibby, Martin, Douby,

Forwards: Thomas, Abdur-Rahim, Artest, Garcia, Williams, Salmons

Centers: Miller, Hawes

I agree with you on Watkins BawLa, he kinda reminds me of a younger, cheaper Etan Thomas. While not spectacular, he could be a very solid big off the bench a la Scot Pollard style.
