Hawes -- numerbs here were a bit deceiving -- maybe the least impressive game of the bunch forhim I think. Maybe even moreso than the 4-16 last time out where he was just missing. Was often overwhlemed by the stength of Morris, and beaten badly on the glass. Also got almost nothing on offense against Morris and had trouble scoring against the set defense where the big guys seemed to disrupt him. Most of his points were when New York was smallballing and had Balkman on him, and off of broken plays. Still showed some sophisticated moves, but when tightly contested threw up a lot of junk. And summer league or not, the rebounding was a bit alarming. Completely invisible on the defensive glass, and the ones he got on the offensive glass were more scooping up loose balls than through overwhelming people in there. And the funny thing is, on the other hand shows better mobility than advertised. He's no KG or whatnot, but it might not be unreasonable to say that he could be the most, ahem, "athletic" center the Kings have had in the last decade.
But there is something amiss in the boardwork. Some guys just have a knack, an instinct, Hawes does not appear to despite moving farily well. On a more positve note the mobility does mean that I think he's fast enoguh to run the court, and while he also does not have the shotblocking knack, he has the mobility and length to get over and challenge. Its just that in the actual NBA he'll get over, challenge, and likely be ignored. But should be able to get a block or two here and there and not be completely invisible. Just not going to scare anybody and no shot at being an intimidator. A few more names that occurred to me watching him: Chris Mihm. Sam Bowie.
Williams -- still looked really good early. Very aggressive and was being checked by Balkman, who is just too small at PF. But quieted down and largely invisible after the fast start.
Shakur -- looked solid as a PG in the early going, but with him at PG, we did not get into things nearly as easily as with Jeter. Some solid defense effort again, but was not able to control Nate. Spent a lot of the game at OG where he had some moments.
Jeter -- looked strong and aggessive attacking the rim, and stabilized the team when he came in. He also was the only King who could hit a jumpshot, and played a dynamic game that I would think might earn him another camp invite.
Watkins -- got little run, but showed a nice little jump hook to prove he has something on offense.
Smith and Young -- were just overwhlemed in the early going by the Knicks wings.
Daniel Artest -- is a freakin' pickup baller. A plump one. I'm jealous -- can I play too?
Caner-Nedley -- was very aggressive on the glass -- apparently did not get Hawes' memo that you can't be aggressive on the boards if there is another aggressive rebounder on the team. Spenser in fact seemed to just cede the boardwork to him. The rest of C-M's game sucked though.
Most of the second quarter was spent in an interview with Malik Rose -- great guy and completely easy/natural interview, and another reason its too bad the Artest to NY thing didn't have legs. If Rose was the returning contract, we would have gotten a replacement Corliss. And after watching this game maybe a Balkman/Collins package of kids might not be so bad anyway. Cisco/Balkman at the 3 would be relentless and have hellacious energy if nothing else.
Nobody was "whirlin' and twirlin" this time out, but Clyde did inform us that Nate was "dishing and swishing" and put some "chillin' on Pooh's thrillin'", which he could do, because turns out that Nate is also "omnipotent".
Not just omnipotent, but "SO omnipotent" because you know, omnipotence needs a modifier and all.
P.S. Listening to Gus and Clyde talk about the new coaches around the league was frustrating -- I could have rattled them off instantly, and these guys struggled for 5 minutes, couldn't think of who Charlotte hired, thought that Wittman might have just been hired in Minnesota, weren't aware that Stotts got fired in Milwaulkee. They should be listening to me announce, not the other way around. Might learn something.
