Kings NBA Draft Workouts

As long as the Kings are thinking Cousins or Johnson, then I'm happy. They need to just take whoever is left over.

The end of that article is utterly ridiculous. #5 for a deal with Prince as the main piece? Kings eager to add a veteran small forward? Right, cause we just don't have enough of players at that position. Terrible journalism.

Anyway, if I were Geoff, I'd have no interest in moving down. Cousins or Johnson.

Amusing sure, but the fact is that the Kings have always (at least since Petrie's been GM) run every big man through the exact same workout regardless of what their strength or skillset is. It makes it easier to directly compare them to the rest of the class as well as see how they stack up to players they've brought in during previous years.

Plus its an individual workout. No having him play against other players. There isn't a whole lot of other useful things you can see them do.

If Minny moves, it will be up to try and get Turner. Thats the guy they wanted from the get go. From reading all the Philly papers, they seem content to take Turner. Collins is already talking about how he plans to use him. I know were all looking for any possiblilty that could happen. But just using logic, they don't draft Cousins. And if they don't make a trade, then Cousins falls to us..

If there is a trade, it could be with us. If they've settled on Johnson, but know were seriously looking at Cousins, they could possibly try and hold us up for some kind of compensation. Naturally I hope I'm right about this. I think Johnson is a very good player. But I think Cousins is a difference maker. With Johnson we'll improve. With Cousins, we'll take a giant step toward credibility.

I respect your opinion, and I hope you're right. Givony mentions that Minny won't in fact work out Cousins and it seems they've settled on Johnson, so much so that they have him going 4 in their mock draft now, with Monroe still going to us. If we pass on Cousins OR Johnson for Monroe I'm going to be EXTREMELY disappointed, but especially if Cousins is still there

I was getting ready to post the same article. Glad I found this post first.. Yeah, I guess Petrie has a set workout that he puts everyone through. Aparently Cousins has been working on his shot. I honestly don't have a problem with a center taking shots from 15 to 17 feet on occasion. What I don't want is him hanging out behind the 3pt line.

Lets face it. If Cousins moves out to the elbow and the other team has to respect his shot from there, it helps open up the lane for Evans. I mean if you going to run the pick and roll with Cousins, then he has to be able to hit that mid-range shot.

If we pass on Cousins for Monroe I'll be headed for rehab. The very thought makes me want to throw up..
 
In an interview, Khan raved about Millicic and Nikola Pekovic, said he really want to keep Darko and bring Pekovic over to the states. Keeping Darko is an expensive endeavor, he made $7.5 millions last season and probably looking for a raise. We're talking about a $40-$50 millions contract, you don't give out money like that unless the guy is a major piece. As much as it puzzles me why anyone would think of Millicic as a major piece, whatever, it is what it is. Maybe Khan knows something I don't. But the T-wolves' front court is set with Jefferson/Love/Millicic and possibly Pekovic. They want to fill their wing position, Wesley Johnson makes sense there.

When it comes to the Kings looking to trade their pick, it's just as likely that GP is looking to move UP int he draft. If the Wolves want to trade down to take Johnson, the most likely partner is us or Golden State. The rumor of the Kings looking to trade their pick could be a signal to the T-Wolves - even if Khan is sure the Kings won't draft Johnson, there is no garauntee whoever ends up picking #5 won't.

Furthermore, I'm hard pressed to believe there's anything the Warriors can give the T-Wolves that the Kings can't. My preferred trade is Minny's #4 for #5 + Aileen Vosin (aka Rubio's mistress).

Pick and pop - off. I believe Petrie will pick Cousins but if he doesn't I'm fine with whoever he picks or whatever he does. We do need a veteran talent - anywhere - I believe that is very important to this team now. We need lots of everything. You name it we need it. I don't believe we are just going for a first and second rounder and quit. I think at least, at least the draft and one talented vet and maybe one more. Building for the future is just great but I think the Kings feel the need to get a significant hunk done now.
 
Well for those of us worried that Petrie will pick someone over Cousins based on their jumpshot, here's a big sigh of relief. At least for me...

I'd hate it on draft night but I'd give Petrie a momentary pass if that actually transpired.

Reason being, the ONLY justification for passing on Cousins for Monroe if DC is there at the fifth pick would be that Geoff sees something very substantial in terms of red flags.

And in that case it would be a momentary pass because if the season comes around and reports are that Cousins is out of shape, disinterested, clashing with teammates etc and in short lead to a flame out then I'd praise Petrie for the foresight.

But if the Kings were to pass on him and he translates to the NBA the way I think he will (14-16 ppg 9-10 rpg in his rookie year) then I'd be calling for Geoff's head.

If Cousins is there and his focus really is on basketball and being a force in the league then he could be EXACTLY what this Kings franchise needs.
 
Call me crazy, and I really have no empirical basis for this prediction, but I have a funny feeling we're gonna end up with Favors.

Cousins and Favors have a head-to-head workout in Jersey on June 21, if Cousins is impressive I could see Jersey dealing the pick and someone grabbing Cousins at 3. Now Favors vs. Johnson would be interesting for David Kahn.

Again, Favors more than likely goes #3, and I'm not Carnac, but I just have an odd feeling we'll get Favors...

That being said my ideal pick would be Cousins

I've had that same feeling for a while. Yes, Favors seems like a much better fit alongside Brook Lopez than Cousins, but that doesn't mean New Jersey won't roll the dice with DC if they think he's the better prospect.

And honestly, I could see New Jersey grabbing Wes Johnson if he really impresseses. Hell, Philly could take Cousins and Turner could fall into Jersey's lap. Either way, I absolutely don't see Minny taking Favors.

I think it's a much more likely scenario than people realize. I think Wall and Turner will be off the board. Wall is absolutely going #1 and even if for some reason Philly passes on Turner, I don't think he wouldn't get past NJ and Minn but even that's a possibility.

In my mind one of the top five players in this draft will be available. And right now it seems to me that there are pretty much even odds of it being Favors, Cousins or Johnson with a VERY slim chance of it being Turner. After consensus top 3 pick Paul Pierce falling to 10 I'm not ruling anything out other than Wall not being available at pick #2.

And honestly, I'd be okay with whichever of those players is available.

In terms of what I'd want for the Kings I have them ranked Cousins, Johnson (really), Turner and then Favors but I really think any of them could help this Kings team.

Why wouldn't Minny take Favors? They have two talented offensive big men who can rebound, but are very unathletic and can't protect the rim. Favors would be the perfect compliment to either of them.
 
I found this on a wolves message board. its a summary of kahn on a local radio show. but it has some good info... says their number one IS NOT available for trade.

Great nuggets

- Thinks it's entirely possible Derrick Favors becomes the best player out of this draft class, reminds us Favors is still only 18, has a terrific body for an 18 year old, is a sweet, quiet kid, will be in Minnesota for a workout on Thursday.

- Says #1 pick is not available for trade

- Says #2 pick is only available if a team is willing to take on a bad contract

- Says #3 pick he believes is available, but hasn't decided yet if they'd want to trade up to 3 or if they'd rather pick at 4.

- Wolves didn't cancel Cousins workout, Cousins' agent has decided, based on the Wolves current roster, the Wolves won't pick him. (Apparently his agent doesn't understand Kahn is a wheeler and dealer)

- Says he likes Gordono Heyward, but would be "shocked" if he's available at #16.

- Says they like Pekovic, but they haven't decided yet if they'll keep him or trade him.

- Says he likes Pittman and Pittman's body, didn't like it a year ago.

- Confirms Al-Faruq Aminu is considered the #3 ranked wing in this draft, but likes him and will bring him in for a workout. Reminds us he's very young.

- They will be bringing in almost everybody because we've got picks everywhere in the first round.

- Says he will be calling Cousins' agent very soon to try to get him to allow a workout, and says if we feel he's the guy at 4, we'll select him regardless and they already have info and an interview with him from before.

- Says Wall obviously won't come in for a workout, but also Turner's agent won't allow him to workout anywhere except with teams in the top 2. Turner's agent is trying to sell this hard that this is a two player draft, but Kahn says that's not necessarily correct. Turner won't be working out for NJ Nets either, so it's not a knock on the Wolves.

You're right, they could think that rotation would work well. And Kahn did take Flynn and Rubio in the same draft so you can't really predict what he'll do. But all year the T'Wolves have suffered from trying to play two PFs, neither of which is cut out to be a center in the NBA. I don't see why they would add to that log jam with another guy whose best position is the 4.

Butler's Gordon Hayward is getting serious looks from the Clippers, Jazz, Pacers and Bucks. But could he go even higher than No. 8. The Sacramento Kings (drafting at No. 5) have been pushing to get Hayward in and will have Hayward and Nevada's Luke Babbitt in for a workout on June 23rd, the day before the draft. Could the Kings take Hayward ahed of the two guys we have highest on their board -- DeMarcus Cousins and Greg Monore? Probably not. But the Kings have been talking to several teams about moving down in the draft. The Kings are looking for veterans and have been shopping Andres Nocioni and Francisco Garcia to see if they can get any takers. If they do move down a few notches, both players could be intriguing.

If Petrie trades down just to dish off Cisco or Nocioni I'll be upset enough. If he does it so he can take another SF with high basketball IQ and good scoring instincts I'll be livid.

Have to hope that there is nothing to these rumors.
 
I don't like the sound of that at all...well, other than the moving
Nocioni/Garcia part.

I wonder if this was a pre Cousins workout rumor...

The trading down rumor does match what Nocioni was told by the team that "they would attempt to trade him on draft day" This doesn't have the makings of a kings pistons swap does it? 5 and Noc for 7 and prince? ugg.

I do like Geoff referred to as "The Petrie" however. haha.

What if Cousins isn't pickable by the Kings, that is, they don't want him and aren't going to pick him. What are the best scenarios then. This probably won't occur but it is certainly a reasonable possibility. Their choices: pick someone else, the obvious being Johnson, Monroe, etc.; trade up or down, both of those provide an opportunity to move someone on the roster now and/or acquire a player from another team. In other words if not Cousins, who?
 
If Cousins dominates Favors in the upcoming New Jersey workout, we could see Favors fall to us. yes we can dream :)
 
Well, the rumor is from Chad Ford. I don't think he has a very good track record of predicting what Petrie will do.
