Kings active in trade talks?

Thornton, per reports, is all but gone for Terry. That moves McLemore into the starting five with Terry playing backup minutes at the one and two and McCallum getting 10 minutes or so (assuming Fredette gets moved as well.)

Tony Allen makes a lot of sense if IT is starting point guard for the next several years. I personally don't see that happening, meaning we would need a more well-rounded two.

Allen is getting a bit older, and he's had a few very successful years as a bench guard. I actually think he and Ben could potentially form a pretty solid SG core that can give you what you need on any given night. Also can swing to a smallball SF.

I could understand Cleveland thinking Deng might bolt and wanting to swap him for Gay, who would be likely to stay unless he, too, opts out. Do we do that deal, though? Deng's a much better defender, but a little over a year older, and a free agent this summer.

If I ran the zoo I would be hard pressed NOT to make the trade on principal, BUT with out assurances from Deng that he would resign then I have to bite my lip and pass. Gay and DMC work and even though there are no guarantees he will stay I can't let something that works go for a an uncertain temporary change.

IT and Jimmer for Beno, Shumpert, and Hardaway JR .. who says no? Hardaway JR might be the guy NY says no for. We might have to sweeten it by taking the Felton contract. But I think NY is desperate, and they could serious benefit from grabbing PG like IT who isn't making any money.

A lot of options there. Could add a Bargs for Landry swap. Bargs for MT, etc. If the Knicks are only willing to deal Shumpert and Hardaway JR if they can dump a major salary.

Hell, I'd even take Amare's stupid contract if they would take Thornton, Landry, and Outlaw back.

Yea, there's a lot of that 'we might not be keeping him regardless, gotta get something for him' to that. Which I think PDA has a bit of history with in the Evans / Vasquez swap. Obviously not equal talent, but a case where something is better than nothing.

Hardaway JR is already giving the Knicks nearly 10 points in 20 minutes. Much better defender than Ben.

If we could get Shumpert AND Hardaway Jr. out of Thomas, I think that would be a great return! I don't think NYK would be willing to give up Hardaway Jr. so easily though. I would be willing to a deal centered around gaining Shumpert and a 2015 expiring for Thomas and Landry. We get value back from Thomas all while shedding Landry's terrible contract.

Why do we need to gain a double digit scorer in return? Scoring is not the problem on this team. As I've said before, we don't need to replace Thomas' scoring, we need to replace him with someone who plays defense, runs the offense, and defers to Cousins and Gay. There is much more to basketball than just scoring the ball, and to use "we need at least a double digit scorer back in return" as the prerequisite for trading Thomas is just plain silly. Here's a list of players below that don't average double digits. You really wouldn't take any of these guys back for Thomas? Really?

Yeah I just saw the Clippers rumor pop up. I wasn't really insinuating that it was a rumor. I was just saying that it would be a good deal for the Kings to make.

I agree it would be a nice pick-up for us... but the Knicks seem to be stingy even though they aren't very good. It's as if they want good to great players while giving up trash. Doesn't work like that.

I think another deal is in the works, actually I thought this would turn in a 3 team deal with the Cavaliers. They seem to have wanted Thornton for some reason as well as Jason Terry while the Nets were looking for more size up front which I thought would have turned into Jason Thompson and perhaps something else from the Cavaliers.

There has already been talks that the Kings have inquired about Jarrett Jack and Luol Deng so something might be in play there.

I guess we will see what happens in the next day or so! Terry isn't bad to have around just from an experience standpoint. He's a former champ and was a big part of that run. His wisdom may have benefits of its own. Evans is a rebounding monster. It will make more sense if we do other deals, and they way we are being mentioned around the trade rumor mill, it sounds like that might be a possibility.

In order for the Kings to get Jack/Evans, Nets to get Thornton, Cleveland to get JT/Terry, it would take the Kings receiving either Milers or Gee from Cleveland. Miles is obviously the better player, and expiring.

But I'm not too fond of salary dumping JT. I do, however, understand that long term Landry and Thompson cannot coexist.

I like the deal for experience purposes. Terry is a champion, a good lockerroom guy and someone who has been a productive SG for 10+ years now, I think Ben can benefit from a guy like Jason. Evans is also a positive guy who's known for doing everything in his power to win. You can't have enough guys who hate losing.

He's not the best despite a lot of what I've read on here. And he's been on decent / winning teams for a while now. Issues here would NOT surprise me.

It wouldn't surprise me either, but at least the Kings finally have their backup PG. Andre Miller probably would have been even more of an issue if we traded for him. Also I think even if Terry isn't the perfect lockerroom guy he still improves the culture. Terry has issues with losing, Thornton has issues with not being the man and those are totally different and from what we've heard around here the past couple of years I don't think Thornton was a good influence at all.

You could just as easily say they plan on keeping IT and preferred to have Thornton's contract broken into smaller movable pieces to facilitate getting under the luxury tax after doing so. We'll see.

Arr yes, the Magic. I think that depends on how serious they are with converting Oladipo to a PG. They also have two lottery picks, I don't see how they don't come away with a PG from the draft. They are also in rebuilding mode, and teams in that stage usually don't throw big money at starting role players. Plus, if they are to make a big splash at PG, the guy they most definitely will target is Kyle Lowdry, not IT.

The most likely scenario for the Magic is that they use the lottery picks on a PG and a big man; and continue to develop the youngster next season and then make a FA splash in 2015.

You're right they have been toying with the notion of turning Oladipo into a PG, but I'm sure if the right PG came along they would be fine with pushing Oladipo back to SG. Now is Thomas that PG? Personally, I would say no as I don't think he will find much success as a starting PG, but that's just my opinion. The Magic could have a totally different opinion.

It's possible that they come away with a PG in the draft, but I don't see how someone could say "I don't see how they don't come away with a PG from the draft." That's quite an assumption. Their future core is Oladipo, Harris, Harkless, Nicholson, Vucevic, Lamb, and O'Quinn. I don't know about you, but I don't see any star players in that bunch to take them to the promise land. If I'm them, I'm drafting BPA either to land that star or to get the best possible asset to trade for a star. I don't think they're in a position to draft by need thus I don't think it is wise to say "I don't see how they don't come away with a PG from the draft."

I agree that Lowry is the better player and thus the better option for them, but there is no guarantee they will be able to sign him as like all FAs. At 27, would he be willing to go to a team that is very deep into their rebuild or would he prefer a team that is further along and already has some pieces in place to compete (like the Kings - Cousins and Gay)?

With all that being said, I agree with how the Magic should operate. They should draft for BPA with both their picks, maintain cap flexibility for the strong free agent class in 2015, and they should try to play and develop their youngsters in the 2014-2015 season either to do just that and develop them or to showcase them for a trade for a star player. However, just because we feel this way, it doesn't mean the Magic's FO feels the same way.

Eh, movable pieces for your franchise player with a 20.9 PER =/= movable pieces for a guy with a 9.8 PER who has never clicked with your head coach and plays the same position as your recent lottery pick.

Anyone else worried that Terry will hate coming to a team with no chance of playoff basketball? He won a ring with Dallas, then went to Boston looking to win which didn't work out, then in NJ the plan was also to contend and while they aren't, can still make the playoffs. Of course I'd say he probably couldn't help a playoff team at this point, or maybe any team but that won't matter all that much if he doesn't want to be in a rebuilding situation as an old vet, which wouldn't be surprising at all.

I'm not a that big a fan of this deal at all standing on its own, whether we got Reggie to thug it up for a few mins next to Cuz or not. We'll see, deadline hasn't arrived yet.

THE KINGS ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS. The team we see today or next week or even at the beginning of next season is not going to be the perfect team. It's gonna take time to do what needs to be done because, as much as some of you don't want to accept it, we don't have a lot of tasty morsels out there to dangle in front of potential trade partners.

Give the front office a freaking chance.
