Finally got round to watching "Letters from Iwo Jima". Thought it was a really great film. Despite all the awards etc., I wasn't expecting it to be my cup of tea (even though I'm a big fan of war films). It surpassed my expectations by quite some bit. One of my favourite films I've ever seen.
Certainly miles ahead of Flags Of Our Fathers, which I found boring. Maybe that's why I was expecting Letters to be a disappointing movie.
If you haven't seen it, watch it. I particularly like the cast; they were excellent, particularly the main character (Siago).

I watched Tropic Thunder with my wife on Sunday. My mom was visiting and we got to watch a movie with minimal baby interuption, it was great. I enjoyed the movie, my wife fell asleep. Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr were a lot of fun and Stiller was Stiller.
Slightly bummed to find out The Wrestler made it to Portland (I checked the times Friday and there weren't any posted) and I missed my chance to see a movie in the theater. I'd also like to see that 3-d movie because I love 3-d.

Rented Pineapple Express on Saturday night. Thought it was hilarious, haven't laughed that much in a long time. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if many found it a bit 'not funny'.

I watched 2 movies on Saturday. Went out to see Milk, and stayed in to see Dan in Real Life. Milk was really well done and impecibly historically acurate. Sean Penn was very good too, as was James Franco. It makes me wonder if prop 8 would have passed if this movie came out 6 months earlier.
I watched Dan in Real Life instead of most of the Kings lost to the Bucks. I like all of the old school family activities, it reminds me of my childhood family reunions. The shower scene is really funny too...

Maid of Honor -- Not even remotely my decision. At all. But, at least I was treated to a delicious lunch this afternoon for being nice enough to sit through it. Without making too many snide comments.

Zodiac - I heard great things about this movie so I just had to see it. But honestly, I found it booooorrrriiinnnnggggg. I could barely stay awake for it. It got like 8/10 stars (user ratings) on IMDB, and I have no idea why. I don't know anything about the real Zodiac killer, but...I did not like this.
It was movie night tonight, so a friend and I went to see Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Better than I expected. Not many gaps/holes in it like many movies in this vein. Again, the fighting/action shots are filmed too closely and choppy to get a real good view at what is going on sometimes, and the oversized crossbows are a bit of a stretch, but it was not bad at all. We both enjoyed it.
Burn After Reading - cute little piece of fluff film, but would have been much better if they were not letting the f-word fly all the time. I mean, come on, it really loses effect when it is used like that, and is really unneccesary. It doesn't offend me, but it really just diminishes the enjoyment of the film.

Milk -- Really, really good. The performances were amazing across the board. Including Sean Penn, whom I usually find overrated. The way Gus Van Sant mixed new and archival footage was also quite impressive. I have, unfortunately, seen very few of the big Oscar nominees this year, but this one is at the top of my list so far.
Hancock -- Watching this film, it felt like it didn't know what kind of movie it wanted to be. Watching some of the DVD bonus features, they mentioned that the original script, which was quite dark, was tweaked a bit to make the film more accessible, and I think that's where the problem was. Ultimately, while I think the film was heavily flawed, I enjoyed it more than I thought it would. Too bad with the tweaking, though; I think it could have been much better if they'd either stayed completely dark or gone completely silly.

I particularly liked the shot of the armored boat driver catching a 50-cal (or whatever it was) right through the torso and the camera angle showing the shot trough the torso, and the boat wall, to see light on the other side. Until he crumples, of course.
Oh yeah, this is the newest Rambo movie, BTW.

Slumdog Millionaire...
With a toddler in the house, we rarely get out to see movies anymore. We try to catch one Oscar-nominated film every year but we rarely end up seeing the one that eventually wins for best picture. I think we might have nailed it this year. This movie had a bit of everything...it was made even better by the fact that I knew very little about it going in. Just a great film.

I was hoping someone would see Slumdog and comment on it. I'm really looking forward to it coming out on video. After watching the Golden Globes, it just seemed like it would be well worth watching...

In addition to the 350+ pages of assigned reading I did this weekend, I managed to squeeze in a couple of movies.
Zack & Miri Make a Porno -- Not the best of the Kevin Smith films, but had some pretty big laughs and was surprisingly sweet at times. I had heard good about it, but was still expecting to be let down; I wasn't. Not brilliant, but amusing.
RocknRolla -- Loved it. Not surprising, really, since I'm an admitted Guy Ritchie fangirl (with the exception of Swept Away, for which I fully blame his illustrious ex). It's not as good as his first two films, but if you liked them, you'll likely enjoy this one, too. Plus, it features Idris Elba. Hard to go wrong, there.
