Sunshine -- for those who like their scifi smart, this was pretty good (and reasonably smart...as long as you did not think too hard ;) ). Kind of a near miss on mind blowingness, but not feeling the last 1/3.
I think I agree with you on this. Just saw it this afternoon.....and I agree that it slips toward the end after the "twist" - if they were able to make this movie without that part, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.....

saw the following over the holidays:

valkyrie - ok, but given that we know what happens historically to hitler, kind of took the "suspense" out of this "suspense thriller."

benjamin button - so-so, but would not watch again. tries too hard to be forrest gump-ish (same director), and it was hard to really care for any of the characters. lots of curious choices throughout the movie that just made me scratch my head.

I watched Left Behind last night. Needless to say it was awful, I think even if you liked the books, you could not deny how awful the quality of just about every element of this movie was. I hear the next two are even so much worse that the book authors sued the production company, which makes me very curious to see them as well :)

Tropic Thunder -- often very funny in a strange mix of lowbrow and sly inside movie humor stuff. About what I originally expected, although as it turns out I was actually a bit disappointed after hearing a "you gotta watch this" review from a friend. Some of the many cameos were great, with Tom Cruise taking his new nut persona to hilarious heights.

Im kind of surprised alot of you guys/gals hated knocked up .. I thought it was pretty good.

Street Kings better than I thought

24 Redemption I'll call it a movie , I missed it the first time around and watched it last night .. Last season was my first season of 24 since season one so I feel like I lost a big chunk of information in between .. anyways - pretty good 'movie'

After reading what Bill Simmons (ESPN) wrote about The Wrestler Im going to try and go see it this week .. I used to be a wrestling fan and it looks pretty good. anyone see it?

The Wrestler is on my list as I've enjoyed Aronofsky's other films (though that is tempered a bit by listening to his commentary track on Pi where he comes off thinking he's the second coming). I've heard Vince McMahon doesn't want anyone to see it, which sounds very amusing. I'm not sure its playing in wide release yet which likely means Portland doesn't have it. We're still second class in that regard.

I loved the end of this movie, actually. If you like this one, you'd probably like Wicker Park, also.

Same writer, different director.

David Fincher being at the helm is one of the main reasons I'm interested in seeing it, actually.

It's not here, either. Distributors have no love for the Pacific Northwest.

The weird thing about Portland is we've certainly got the culture for early releases of this variety and plenty of theaters that cater to this crowd, not to mention more and more Hollywood projects are shooting up here, we've got Hollywood screenwriting and directing talent here and we've got an animation/effects shop with big Nike bucks backing it.

I think Seattle does alright, but I checked and they don't have it either. LA, SF, Chicago, Boston/Cambridge and DC Metro only.

Re: Benjamin Button - 2 people just today have walked into my office telling me they saw it this weekend and didn't like it, so I probably won't consider it until DVD release especially with the little guy around.

But funnily enough it was actually a co-workers rant ~10 years ago that actually inspired me to see Pi. He kept going on and on about how it was the worst movie he had ever seen, and I figure anything that provokes that kind of reaction is worth seeing.

Just watched a big ol' slice of 80's cheese called Vision Quest.

I'm a sucker for eighties movies. Eighties movies teen flicks? Even more. Eighties movies teen flicks centered around sports (in this case, high school wrestling)? We have a winner.

I remember that flick. Set to a Madonna track when she was just getting started as I recall.

Hrmm... I just realized that I haven't watched a single movie since the last time I posted in this thread. Not even on cable. I'm pissing away money on HBO and Cinemax...

I plan to break the streak over the weekend, though; CJ's been bugging me to take him to see Bolt.

We took our 5-year old to see it and he really liked it. As did we. Yes, it is Disney and predictable. But we liked it anyways.

Saw Eagle Eye and I found it really entertaining and enjoyable. Not the most realistic movie, but I thought the pieces fell together nicely at the end. Am I the only one who found this similar to I,Robot (minus the actual robots)? And not just because Shia was in both.

Five? My son's almost twelve, Hawk... is this going to be too "kiddie" for him?
Maybe - I obviously don't know him. It is along the lines of other recent Disney/Pixar films. If he has liked Incredibles, Toy Story, etc, etc, he'd probably like this one, too.

I'd take him and enjoy. Like most recent animated films, there is stuff in there for adults, too.

just a warning for people with children thinking about taking them to see Marley and me. My sister took my 4yr old niece and she's still having issues about the ending.
the dog dies

Valkyrie - It was a good, not great movie. While Cruise is decent, I agree with a review I read that there are other actors in this movie who likely would have been more compelling in the lead role. Kenneth Brannagh for one. Cruise just didn't convince me that his character was the natural leader.

On the other hand, I didn't really know that this attempt, the last, was only one of 15 known attempts by Germans to assassinate Hitler. (So much for German efficiency. :p)

And it reminds you that there are people willing to risk not just their own lives, but the lives of their entire families for what they believe is right.

Edit to add:

I watched "Crónicas" on Comcast On Demand over the weekend. A 2004 film starring John Leguizamo in his first Spanish language film (subtitled). He's a reporter covering a violent mob incident in Ecuador. He uncovers a possible lead to the identity of a pedophile serial killer. This is one creepy killer, partly because he's quite beloved by friends, family and neighbors.

Anyway, reporters after sensationalism get hit hard in this story. The tension is over whether someone makes things right, makes the correct moral choice. It's a hard movie to watch.

The surroundings and people seem quite realistic, but there are some stereotypes here and some extraneous scenes/stories that don't add much. I wouldn't call it a great movie, but I did find it quite interesting.

"Burn After Reading" - I still don't get the fascination of Coen Brothers films. I really wanted to like this film as I like virtually all the actors, but it just didn't happen. I didn't like it; I didn't hate it. I actually found it totaly forgettable...

Uh oh... I just picked up Wanted at the video store this afternoon to replace the aforementioned disappointment.

...sigh...

Maybe I'll just watch Ironman again instead.

Wanted is way cheesy, but I enjoyed it.

But, then again, I don't know how valuable my opinion will be -- I also absolutely loved Burn After Reading.

Saw "The Painted Veil" recently. Wasn't really expecting much, as I tend to gravitate more towards art house type films, but I was pleasantly surprised by it.
