My next pick is proof that even the worst actors can be in at least one watchable movie:

Bloodsport - 1988

I think in future drafts we need to add a rule where draft clocks don't run on holidays, as its obvious why the reason was that atx didn't do his picks yesterday.

BUT there is the option to PM someone else to post your picks should you know you're not going to be available. Of course, after Fourth of July, the next real holiday isn't until Labor Day so it might be a moot point for a long time.

I rolled both of them into 1 for timing out when that happened in the Babes draft. SLight double penalty, but somebody is even here or not, and if they aren't, 2 days of no activity seemed like it would really grind things to a halt.
Oh, very well... but only because I go back to a day schedule starting in the morning, and I'm not staying up until 0400 to make my next pick. :p

I watched a lot of kung fu theatre growing up, but for some reason, they never showed any Jackie Chan movies. As a result, this was my first exposure to him. With my sixteenth pick, I select:

Rumble In the Bronx - 1995

The American President [1995]

I needed another happy flick to keep the clouds (and Brick's snide comments) away from my island. What can I say, I'm a sucker for a good romantic comedy.

I really don't like to watch romantic movies, however, this movie is actually really good. Good pick.

Look, since you abandoned your depressing ways, you have drafted a cutesy movie about a lovable alien, a baseball fantasy, a Disney animated film...you didn't need this. But it is a good flick. ;)

I did need this, Brick. Silence of the Lambs and Schindler's List are both worth at least 2 happy movies. :p

sorry for the long delay, folks. had left on thursday planning to be back friday evening but didn't get home to check in till just now. up next:

Donnie Darko- 2001

I probably could have taken this with my last pick of the draft but i'm taking what I consider my first dark flick with me now. Released in '01, this movie has gained quite a cult following and for very good reason IMO. This movie is weird, different and interesting and probably not for everybody.

Me Myself & Irene 2000

So I was gonna take a foreign movie here but decided that my island is severely lacking in the comedy department. I am picking this Farrelly brothers film because I will need some laughs on this lonely island of mine and this movie is sure to please.

Great pick. Love that movie. Jim Carreys second best movie IMO (after Dumb & Dumber)

My next pick is one of my favorite films from one of my favorite directors.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) -- There's a certain quality to Lasse Hallström's films that I have always really enjoyed. They don't feel at all rushed or overambitious, and are instead perfectly content to just let the story unfold at its own pace. Which, as much as I love my flashy gimmicks, is a very nice change. Though the film that I would probably consider to be his best is one of his early Swedish films, this one is by far my favorite. The story is relatively small in size, the pace is leisurely, its humor always feels genuine and not too precious or glib, and it manages to be touching and sentimental without every being too sappy. However, above all else, it is the performances that hook me -- Johnny Depp is always a treat to watch and is especially good here, Juliet Lewis is surprisingly unannoying, John C. Reilly is understated and really funny, and Leonardo DiCaprio (in his first role since "Growing Pains," I believe) is well worth the Oscar nomination he earned for this one. More than any of the other films I've picked, which are all acquired tastes, I strongly recommend this one to any folks reading this who may not have seen it yet.

I assumed. Fangirl. :p

The guy should just do Johnny Depp, Live Nude at the Apollo, so you could settle down and just have an all time fav. ;)

Nah... not necessary. I love Johnny for his mind.

Well, his cheekbones, too, but I hardly need full nudity to appreciate them.

I was very surprised to see it last this long, frankly. I never had it on my list, just because I don't watch it anywhere near as often as some of the other DVDs in my collection, but it's got to be one of the largest cult hits of recent years.

Women.

There is no man who would EVER say such a thing about a woman he was interested in.

Well...except directly to her if she asked of course. :p

Here is where I get to brag that I met the director of the movie I am picking (Jim Jarmush). OK, I am bragging, I met Jim Jarmush at Belgrade Film Fest in 1991/2. Backstage at a show. Johnny Depp was there too. On his way to filming GGG's last pick. :)

Back to the draft: Jim Jarmush is one of my favorite directors. Not because he is a genius like Kubrick, or makes crazy movies that I can't resist like Lynch does. Jarmush is extremely original, funny and clever and his movies reflect it every bit and then some. Especially his early stuff, which was made on shoestring budgets and with leftover film from Wim Wenders' projects (where Jarmush was assistant). No one that I know of has made more with less in the movies then Jarmush. Kevin Smith and Tarantino all came much later and table was already set for indie filmmakers to make good to great movies on B-movie (or even Z-movie) budgets.

So here is my combination Christmas/comedy movie for December viewing:

The Ref (1994)

This one doesn't have a lot of big names:

Denis Leary - Gus
Judy Davis - Caroline Chasseur
Kevin Spacey - Lloyd Chasseur

but I needed to have Spacey on my island and a little more Denis Leary doesn't hurt, either.

While the bits with their son are probably the weakest part of the film, the interplay between these three is great.

Denis is the robber with the gun holding Judy and Kevin hostage in their home while the town is being searched door-to-door for he and his drunk getaway man after a botched robbery attempt. She had an affair, and counseling is not going well, to say the least. Then the extended family shows up, and Denis is pretending to be their counsellor over Christmas dinner. I love Kevin Spacey in this movie.

Not the greatest movie ever, but this is my own "Christmas" movie I watch every year.

Caroline: How can we both be in the marriage and I'm miserable and you're content?
Lloyd: Luck?

Caroline: I had this dream...
Lloyd: Do we have to do dreams?
Caroline: I'm in this restaurant, and the waiter brings me my entree. It was a salad. It was Lloyd's head on a plate of spinach with his p**** sticking out of his ear. And I said, "I didn't order this." And the waiter said, "Oh you must try it, it's a delicacy. But don't eat the p****, it's just garnish."
Dr. Wong: Lloyd, what do you think about the dream?
Lloyd: I think she should stop telling it at dinner parties to all our friends.

Lloyd: You know what I'm going to get you next Christmas, Mom? A big wooden cross, so that every time you feel unappreciated for your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it.

Gus: What is the matter with you? I thought Mothers were sweet and nice a-a-and Patient. I know loan sharks who are more forgiving than you. Your husband ain't dead, lady. He's hiding.

Gus: Sit down, Connie.
Connie Chasseur: Excuse me, but I am not one of your patients.
Gus: You're gonna be somebody's patient if you don't get your a** back down in that chair.
John Chasseur: Wow!
Gus: I swear to God, you hit that kid one more time and I will stick that pig's head right up your a**!
Connie Chasseur: Gary, are you gonna let him talk to me like that?
Gary Chasseur: Well, he is a doctor.

Jarmusch is my favorite director, and this is my favorite of his films.

While there's a part of me that feels instant camaraderie with another fan, the part of me that was counting on this being available in a couple of rounds is much more dominant. And much more petty. So... I think I hate you now.

Sorry.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, that was an awesome turn of emotion...I want to be like you one day...so I'm taking notes...this is going under the notes on calling people "meanieface" or "meaniehead" because I have been much too nice (well, once I stopped whining and otherwise getting indignant) about people stealing stuff off my movie list. I need a rougher edge to me and you are my role model.

;)

Since dime dropper hasn't checked back in and I'm online right now, I'm going to go ahead and select my next film. I'm not sure this is any competition for his anyway...

March of the Penguins (2005)

Marchofthepenguins_bigposter.jpg

Anyone who knows me well knows that if the rules of this draft were a bit different, my list would look something like this:

1.) Planet Earth
2.) Blue Planet
3.) PBS's Evolution series
4.) Life of Birds
5.) Life of Mammals
6.) etc.....

My TV is on the Science Channel, Discovery, Animal Planet, National Geographic, etc. most of the time. So when I get the chance to pick a feature film that is a science documentary, I'm doing it. March of the Penguins, an Oscar winning film for best documentary, displays the hardships faced by emperor penguins in Antarctica as they fulfill their life's work...reproduction. It features brilliant narration from Morgan Freeman, which may account for a lot of its popularity in the U.S. I love it not only as an amazing natural drama, but also because it offered the opportunity for movie-goers to actually learn something when they went to the theater. It has everything good fictional dramas have...an interesting plot, struggles and hardships, conflict, intrigue, sadness, joy, and redemption (and other stuff, too, but I'm not very poetic).

And penguins...who doesn't love penguins?

Best. Pick. Evar.
