Pitch Black 1999

Pitch_Black_poster.JPG

This was Vin's break out role. I think it is also his best role. Third best Sci Fi movie in the last ten years..

Hmmm...sad I had to even think about that before deciding on whetehr it was true or not. I liked Pitch Black. Have watched it several times. Even thought the sequel had some ideas (or at least ambition). But when it starts getting lauded as one of the best in the last decade, that's saying a lot about the competition.

After Dark City and now this, I am slightly wondering about whether you have another particular dark little sleeper scifi flick from the same era on your list or not. I know I simply do not have room for it and would not have expected it to be taken, but now, who knows.

Uh no...no threat from me at all on that one. That was a mess. And yes, I have read the book -- part of WHY I consider it a mess. ;)

And no, the scifi channel's snoozer really wasn't any better of an attempt. I'm not even sure if it can be done. Just IMO it hasn't yet. Great book, or at least I thought so at 12. But just really really hard to adapt.

Yeah, I wasn't sure which way you'd lean on this. I saw the movie before I read the books (and I've read all 6 of Frank's series and 8 of the prequels/sequels by his son) and this movie gave me a visual reference that I couldn't shake. I know it might not be accurate to the books, but I still enjoy the movie on it's own without being too picky about the deviations from the book. I think this is because the book is so difficult to adapt, I don't mind the inconsistencies.

I didn't mean that the sci-fi channel version was better, just more accurate to the original story.

you gotta be ****ting me, had this on my list thinking that nobody else would want it

I had it VERY late on my own list originally, thinking that even though it's fairly well known it likely wouldn't be an essential pick to anyone but me. Like I said, the only reason I took it so soon is because I watched it again last night and realized how bummed I'd be to lose it.

A.I (Artificial Intelligence) 2001

I'll be the first to admit that when this Spielberg flick came out, I had absolutely zero interest in watching it. Couple years after it came out some roommates were watching it on HBO and well, let's just say it really caught me off guard. Despite being nominated for 3 academy awards, I do know some people that do not like this movie. And that's fine with me. Standout performances by Haley Joel Osment, Frances O'connor (as the mother) and Jude law make this movie pretty damn good. Changing things up from most of my other picks here, but this movie was just pretty damn cool in my opinion and the performances were believable.

Yeah... I'm going to have to say this is one place where our various lists steer well clear of each other. One of a very few films that I thought was so bad it literally made me angry while sitting in the theater. Also a film that cemented my belief that Schindler's List and the Indiana Jones franchise are the only worthwhile moments in Spielberg's career. The trip to Rouge City and Jude Law's performance stand out as highlights, nuggets of a story/film that had potential, but the rest... ugh.

EDIT: Amistad was also good.

You know what? That maybe COULD have been a good movie...if they had just ended it when they should have. Sink to the bottom of the lake, fade out...voila! But no, it comes from the bloated Spielberg era, and he just had to throw on 30 minutes of tacked on stuff. Just boo. Good enough concept, but amazingly the problem was it could have used a more disciplined director.

Dances with Wolves 1990

This was a last second change, as I really didn't think I would take another "western" or Kevin Costner movie in my draft, but I couldn't pass it up this late in the draft. Winner of 7 academy awards and nominated for several more, this movie delivers. At the time, this movie was huge and I remember watching it in the theatre at a very young age. I saw it again a couple months back and still really like this movie. I was gonna go with 2 of my darker picks or a foreign one here, but this will do just fine.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid. I was hoping to take it with either of my last two picks. I thought no one would take it:mad:

And with that selection, I am officially building a bridge to Slim's island for movie night. No one's list even comes close to the amount of shout-at-the-screen fun he's got going.

I have seen that.

Really. :o

And atx, nice pick although it would not go on my island. I was not so young when it came out, and saw it multiple times there after it hit video despite the slow pace -- beautiful movie.

I'd picked nine kung fu movies in a row, and you didn't think I was going to go for The Last Dragon? :D

I was hoping you would forget about that movie and just stick with Asian made. I now have to change my next movie on my list to another of my childhood favorites I had set a side for latter in the draft just because of you. Thank god I pick before you.:D It's not the movie you think it is either.

And with Dances With Wolves off the board I think I'll go in a completely different direction....

Liar Liar [1997]
LiarLiar.jpg

Loved this movie from the moment I saw it. People either love Jim Carrey or they hate him. I love him and this, to me, is his best comedy. You can keep Ace, and Dumb and Dumber, but give me my liar liar.

Cop: You know why I pulled you over?
Fletcher: Depends on how long you were following me!
Cop: Why don't we just take it from the top?
Fletcher: Here goes: I sped. I followed too closely. I ran a stop sign. I almost hit a Chevy. I sped some more. I failed to yield at a crosswalk. I changed lanes at the intersection. I changed lanes without signaling while running a red light and *speeding*!
Cop: Is that all?
Fletcher: No... I have unpaid parking tickets.
[groans]
Fletcher: ... be gentle.

Unless I have any last minute changes, I think my dark and violent quota is officially fulfilled. So, to fully kick off the lighter and brighter side of Gadget:

Follow the Fleet (1936) -- Remember a couple picks ago when I mentioned that I could easily put together a top 20 using only films from 1932-1945? Well, I could take that a step further -- I could easily put together a top 20 using only musicals from 1932-1945. Easily. I was exposed to just about every style/era of film and music as a child, thanks to my parents, and the early musicals became an obsession for me before I was even old enough to know what was going on. And, while I can't remember back far enough to know which of these films I saw first, or which was the one/the moment that inspired this obsession (and, when I was younger that's definitely what it was), I do know that Follow the Fleet is THE film that made me want to be a dancer. I wanted to move like that. I also know that Fred and Ginger are THE reason that, when I did start dancing, I made sure to dedicate a lot of time to both tap and ballroom -- I wanted to be ready just in case I was ever approached by a dapper gent who'd romance me with a spontaneous, yet immaculately choreographed, fox trot. And, who knows? It could still happen. With supporting performances from Randolf Scott and Harriet Hilliard (her first scene is as a school teacher who's quickly told she looks far too intelligent to land a man... ah, the 30's... I've yet to figure out if she took that advice in order to get Ozzie), cameos from Betty Grable and a VERY young Lucille Ball, as well as a capuchin monkey in a sailor suit... well, how could I not choose this one?

Ok got a question who is going to steal my 20th rank pick before me. Cast Away. It would be a shame if someone picks it before me.:D

Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb (1964)

When in doubt what to pick next, I can't really go wrong with another Kubrick movie, can I?

Well, I guess I can bolster my superhero movie quotient with:

Spider-man 2 (2004)

I think we've all been beating around this one for a while, and I really like the Doc Oc fights, so I'm gonna take it and not look back. Personally, I think it is one of the best superhero movies ever made.

From wiki:

Spider-Man 2 opened in the United States on June 30, 2004 and grossed $40.4 million in its first day; this was the second highest opening day, after The Matrix Reloaded.[22] In its first six days the film had grossed over $180 million[23] and eventually went on to gross $373.5 million, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 2004, behind Shrek 2. Worldwide, the film grossed $783.8 million, ranking behind Shrek 2 and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Spider-Man 2's gross is currently among the all-time top ten grossing films domestically (#10) and is among the top twenty-five worldwide (#21).[24]

Spider-Man 2 won an Academy Award for Visual Effects, and was nominated for Sound and Sound Editing.[25] The film won Saturn Awards for Best Actor, Best Director, Best Fantasy Film, Best Special Effects, and Best Writer, while being nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Music.[26] It was nominated for two BAFTA awards for Special Visual Effects and Sound.[27] AFI listed the movie as one of the 10 best films of 2004.[28] Spider-Man 2 topped Rotten Tomatoes's list of the best-reviewed comic book movies of all time, beating out X2: X-Men United, Batman Begins and Superman.[29]
