My goodness... so much discussion for a trio of boring movies? :p

My next pick:

rushmorever1ch7.jpg

Rushmore (1998)
-- I fell in love with this film when I saw it in theaters and have followed the Anderson/Wilson collaboration ever since, specifically because of my fondness for this movie. From a technical standpoint, the writing is great, the direction is beautiful (though subtly so), the use of music is FANTASTIC, and Bill Murry gives one of my very favorite performances ever. I think my favorite thing about this film, however, is its tone -- it manages to keep/show off the quirky and sarcastic writing that is still present in their later films, but feels far less staged.

Way of the dragon- 1972

Also released in america under the title Return of the dragon, I had to pick up this Bruce Lee movie now. I have always been a huge Bruce Lee fan and had to bring some of his *** kicking to my island. Known for the colliseum brawl with Chuck Norris, this movie never gets old.

Ha! Slim has lured that entire end of the snake into a Kung Fu death spasm. :D

And lest we lose the exccellent momentum of today, do not forget to PM yourself for your second pick atx. ;)

Full_Metal_Jacket-_1987.jpg

Full Metal Jacket- 1987

An 80s war movie that takes me back to the old days. R.Lee Emery is classic in this flick and it's one of my favorites.

I got a question I know some T.V. movies are not acceptable but how about the movie IT. That movie freaked me out when I was young.

Well, I think its time for this...

Finding Nemo [2003]

"Just keep swimming, just keep swimming."

I love this movie. Its probably worse now that I have a son, but there was a soft, warm spot in my heart before he was born, so I can't completely blame it on him.

That is a brilliant pick... and was totally my next pick! Such a good story... such solid animation... just brilliant.

Very nice pick. That was an awesome movie.

My next pick:

Bringing Up Baby (1938)
-- Rule #1: Gadget hates almost all romantic comedies. Rule #2: With very few exceptions, the ones she doesn't hate were all made pre-1950. This is one of my very favorite films of any era/genre/whatever. It's just... perfect. There was just something about the pacing and snappiness of dialog from these 30s/40s comedies that has, sadly, completely disappeared from contemporary cinema. O Brother, Where Art Thou? came close, and a few other films have made valiant efforts to get there, but nothing has yet captured the right feel. There were several films that I could have taken to fill the same need on my island, in fact I could have easily put together two full lists using only films from about 1932-1945, but this is my clear favorite and the obvious choice in the event I only get around to one such selection.

Angel Heart (1987)

Just have to bring Micky with me to the island. Just have to. Could not decide between this and one other Mickey Rourke movie, in the end figured out that the athmosphere and soundtrack will make this one more re-watchable.

According to wikipedia, movie did not fare well in original release. I saw it back in the old country and as far as I could tell it was a huge hit back there. Even though Wikipedia goes on to say that movie eventually became cult classic, I still find it difficult to believe that it wasn't a hit movie. My friends and I saw it something like 5 times in just one summer.

EDIT: could not find a better image of the poster. Apparently, web filtering at work has determined that all the sites hosting decent sized images of the poster a "profane".

Does your work filter wikipedia? That's where I have been getting all my movie/music pics from, including this one above.

P.S. And I barely remember that movie -- and by name only. pretty sure I've never seen it. So no, not a big hit for whatever reason. Mickey was supposed to turn into a megastar and just never took off.

I guess I am too lazy/dumb to click on the tumbnail and link to the large pic on wikipedia. Thanks!

I am going to add to (OK, OK, kick off) the romantic comedy portion of my list with:

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)

A wonderful old film with Cary Grant where he's a confirmed bachelor who has decided to get married to the "girl next door" but gets wrapped up in his two wonderfully pleasant aunts killing lonely men with arsenic in elderberry wine and his mentally disturbed brother who thinks he's Theodore Roosevelt burying yellow fever victims in the basement. Oh, yeah, and throw in his other brother Johnny, a multiple murderer hiding out in the house after undergoing plastic surgery to change his looks. And the alcoholic plastic surgeon. And his new wife waiting next door for him to get ready to leave on their honeymoon.

Anyways, I love this movie and am glad to have it with me. :D

From wiki:

The contemporary critical reviews were uniformly positive. The New York Times critic summed up the majority view, "As a whole, 'Arsenic and Old Lace,' the Warner picture which came to the Strand yesterday, is good macabre fun." Variety declared, "Capra's production, not elaborate, captures the color and spirit of the play, while the able writing team of Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein has turned in a very workable, tightly-compressed script. Capra's own intelligent direction rounds out."

Reverend Harper: Have you ever tried to persuade him that he wasn't Teddy Roosevelt?
Abby Brewster: Oh, no.
Martha Brewster: Oh, he's so happy being Teddy Roosevelt.
Abby Brewster: Oh... Do you remember, Martha, once, a long time ago, we thought if he'd be George Washington, it would be a change for him, and we suggested it.
Martha Brewster: And do you know what happened? He just stayed under his bed for days and wouldn't be anybody.

Mortimer Brewster: Now look, darling, how did he die?
Abby Brewster: Oh, Mortimer, don't be so inquisitive. The gentleman died because he drank some wine with poison in it.
Mortimer Brewster: Well, how did the poison get in the wine?
Martha Brewster: Well, we put in wine because it's less noticeable. When it's in tea it has a distinct odor.

[Discussing the body count]
Dr. Einstein: You got twelve, they got twelve.
[Angrily grabs Dr. Einstein's necktie]
Jonathan Brewster: I've got thirteen!
Dr. Einstein: No, Johnny, twelve - don't brag.
Jonathan Brewster: Thirteen! There's Mr. Spinalzo and the first one in London, two in Johannesburg, one in Sydney, one in Melbourne, two in San Francisco, one in Phoenix, Arizona...
Dr. Einstein: Phoenix?
Jonathan Brewster: The filling station...
Dr. Einstein: Filling station? Oh!
[Slits throat]
Dr. Einstein: Yes.
Jonathan Brewster: Then three in Chicago and one in South Bend.
Dr. Einstein: You cannot count the one in South Bend. He died of pneumonia!
Jonathan Brewster: He wouldn't have died of pneumonia if I hadn't shot him!
Dr. Einstein: No, no, Johnny. You cannot count him. You got twelve, they got twelve. The old ladies is just as good as you are!

here is my next movie. Man I love the 80's.

Beverly hills Cop 1984

404px-Beverly_Hills_Cop.jpg

This was Eddie Murphy's prime. Watching this, Coming to America and his stand up RAW. I often wondered what happen to Eddie. He is not the same. He lost his edge IMO, it is a shame.

With Captain Willard, Vincent Vega & Julius, Ellen Ripley and Blondie already on my island, I'm going to drastically switch gears and select a movie that most probably wouldn't expect to be on my list of favorites.

Let me help you off the boat, Ms. Golightly.

Breakfast-At-Tiffanys-Poster-C11738524.jpeg

Breakfast at Tiffany's - 1961

I was forced to watch this several years back by a girlfriend on an otherwise forgettable evening. And to my utter shock, midway through the first erratic scene in Holly's apartment, I was already mesmerized by Audrey Hepburn.

There are several quirky things I enjoy about this movie, but the main thing is simply watching Hepburn absolutely put the film on her back and carry it to the finish line. It's like watching Lebron carry the Cavs through the playoffs; it's just so fun to see a talent like Hepburn take an eccentric, but watered-down (thanks to the studios) Capote-novella-to-big-screen translation, and make it into a classic.

I don't care that Capote wanted Marlyn Monroe to play Holly, nor that Holly's role as a call girl and the original ending were "hollywood-ized" to take off the edge. This movie works because of Hepburn.

And the funny thing is, flashforward to the present and I can't remember the name of the girlfriend who introduced us, but I'm ecstatic to have Ms. Golightly coming to my island.

Oh, and one more thing. On my island all of the dispicable scenes with Mickey Rooney will be banned and the movie will be slightly altered so that Mr. Yunioshi is the consistantly complaining, but unseen neighbor upstairs.

The Hunt For Red October (1990)

Well I am going to buck the recent old rom com fad (and thank it for distracting peeps) and swoop back in to scoop up one more great action hybrid (this one action/spy thriller). After losing out on a number of good ones while taking comedies, westerns, romances etc., was glad to see one of the elite still remaining out there. A late Cold War Tom Clancy classic about a nuclear submarine and its captain and the cat and mouse showdown which ensues when it goes AWOL. Also guarantees me a movie with one of my favorite actors (Sean Connery -- who always had great screen presence, but frequently lousy tastes in the projects he took).
