I need some action picks on my island....didn't notice how thin I was on that. The most actiony movie I have so far is Empire Strikes Back. With that said I pick...
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - 1989
The best Indiana Jones not named Raiders of the Lost Ark, this one packs in just as much action and comedy as the others, with a few added twists spread over one of the more complex Indiana plots. Sean Connery is awesome as Jones' dad and its too bad he didn't come back to play him in Crystal Skulls, it really would've made that film better. Their chemistry is awesome in this movie, providing many hilarious and tense scenes.

Elsa: [to Indy] I'll never forget how vonderful it vas.
Professor Henry Jones: Why thank you. It was rather wonderful.
Elsa: [kisses Indy] Zat's how Austrians say goodbye.

My next two movies are similar in the sense that I watched them the first time either on a whim or without much expectation going in and walked out deeply moved for different yet similar reasons.
The Game – 1997
David Fincher has gotten some love already, so I’m going add more. I’m not one you could call a Michael Douglas fan either, but dude can create characters that are engrossing. This movie allows us to watch the high rise high money mover & shaker control freak get stripped bare emotionally in an all encompassing psychological game and the process he goes through and his life goes from complete structure to out of control – this movie sucked me in because things happen to Douglas and as a viewer I was kept equally as off kilter as he is.
Some people complain about the ending and how far fetched it was, I think I did maybe after I watched it for the second time but when I saw this the first time I remember thinking O M G...and trying to figure out how the game people screwed up so badly... And still, every time I watch this, I’m hooked into the uncomfortable-ness that goes along with watching Nicholas Van Orton’s structured life go to unstructured hell. I watch this movie repeatedly and every time I notice a new piece of the thread of the intricacies of the game in which Douglas’ character is involved. Dark film, dark action, dark build up to how the game ends. Great stuff.

Not to mention the not only would I have capped my brother for such a stunt, but I would have hunted down each and every member of the organization behind the game, then their families, and then their pets crowd.
But of course that's good for you, as it meant I was no threat to steal your movie.

Okay, well the movie I was going to take before I remembered Good Will Hunting is still there...and yet I still have a hard time seeing anybody behind me in the draft order taking it in this loop. All my worries were about you 1-7 people, not you 9-16ers. So, I am going to procrastinate on that one again, and probably get bit eventually. Thus I go a different way:
The Thing (1982)
Remember (likely not) when I said I still had one of the few 10 rated movies I have ever given lurking out there ready to take? No, it was not a Godfather sequel, or Casablanca, or any of that tripe. It was this. And the 10 is because it is damn near perfect at what it was designed to do -- which is scare the poop out of you. I am extraordinarily hard to scare, in a cinematic sense at least. Ghosts? Lazy, and I don't believe in them. Serial killer? I'd kick his scrawny psycho ***. But this...I was not initially sure I even wanted this on my island...do I really want to sit on a lonely island watching scary movies after dark? But once I decided to take one along as a representative, this was a no brainer. It is quite possibly the scariest film ever made.

RE: The Thing - Have you seen the original from 1951? Watched it a couple times with my dad - a good movie, especially for the time.
I really don't enjoy movies like the remake at all. I don't get "horror" flicks. I like Aliens and the like (action/sci-fi-horror?), but some movies cross a boundary that I do not find appealing and can't really get into the movie. Gore, straight horror, etc., has no draw. Casablanca - 1942
Yes, on the surface it's an American patriotism propganda film supported by a rickety love triangle posing as plot. Actually though, that's just window dressing.
What makes the movie is the metaphorical on-screen chess match between Rick Blain and Captian Louis Renault, because really, the movie isn't about Rick and Ilsa's steamy love afair, eventually leading the cynical Rick to become a self-sacrificing patriot.
It's actually just the prologue to the eventual partnership of Rick and Louis.
And it's no coincidence some of the best dialogue in the movie is between the two:
Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.
I love chess, and I love watching two masters feeling each other out, building strategies, positioning, sacrificing peices, misdirecting the opponent and eventually one moving in for the kill.
That's what Casablanca is to me ... and it doesn't hurt that the Babes on my island will enjoy the romance angle and wall-to-wall catchphrases.

Dazed and Confused 1993

Again I find myself picking and choosing which direction to go. Lots of movies still to choose from, but which would be in danger of being taken if I don't grab it soon?
Gonna pass on a couple older favorites this round to beef up my superhero quota and hope they are still there later:
Iron Man (2008)
I really enjoyed this movie. And surprisingly, it wasn't as much for the action scenes as the character development/humor of of Tony Stark as played by Robert Downey Jr., who is perfect in this role. Special effects were very well done. Action scenes fun to watch. Gwyneth Paltrow was great as his assistant as well. I didn't even recognize Jeff Bridges at first.
While the film can be a bit slow in a couple points, it was a lot of fun and really nailed what I like in a superhero movie - character and development with a good bit of action. I think the sequel will bump up the action a bit now that the character has been well introduced.

1971 was a great year. Kubrick made Clockwork Orange, as only Kubrick could make it.

if the mrs is squeamish, you might want to leave her out of it and definitely NOT around the kids. I still have issues with the "singing in the rain" scene, it took several years and repeated viewings of the original singing in the rain movie to remove that image from my mind.

My next is another film that I thought for sure would have been gone long ago, but I'm very glad it's not.
Boogie Nights (1997) -- I remember when this movie came out being intrigued by the cast (which is just fantastic), and curious based on the subject matter, but I really had no idea what to expect otherwise. I didn't know what Mark Whalberg would be capable of as an actor (as it turns out, he's been one of my favorites of the last decade), I didn't know whether or not Burt Reynolds' "comeback" would work, I didn't know much about PT Anderson other than a bit of acclaim from his (barely known) first effort, and I was fully prepared for this to be a failed experiment. However, I was not prepared for it to work both as hilarious comedy and as genuinely moving drama. I wasn't prepared for it to be genuinely good. As is the case with most of the films on my list so far, I've watched this one countless times since its release, and it's still fresh. Also, as an added bonus, bringing along the extra suped up DVD edition is like taking two movies -- the commentary track, intentionally making fun of commentary tracks, is almost as enjoyable as the film itself.

Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Cane, Scarlett Johansson, and David Bowie (yeah, that David Bowie). Love this movie. Doesn't hurt that I have a slight man crush on Mr. Jackman AND Mr. Bale.

The Cider House Rules- 1999
I remember when I saw this movie my girlfriend at the time had rented it to watch together. It was some time after it left the threatres and I honestly didn't have much interest in it. But after watching for just a couple of minutes, I was definitely into it. This movie showcases Toby Maguire's best performance (in my opinion) and some wonderful efforts from the very beautiful Charlize Theron, Michael Cane and even featues Erykah Badu. The acting is all around great and the story keeps you intrigued. It also won two academy awards. Yeah, it comes with me.

I don't know that I could convincingly tell myself, or anyone else, that this is actually a good film. However, it is one of my very favorites as far as escapist entertainment is concerned. And, yes, just to get it out of the way (since Brick's already pointed out my common thread of hunky leading men), Brandon Lee was friggin' gorgeous. He was also charismatic and engaging enough, despite the rather glaring fact that he's not much of an actor, that this likely would have launched a very fruitful career... had it not been for that little on-set gun accident. In any case, this is the first of my list that I feel is completely frivolous, but I'm okay with that. My inner 14-year-old boy can't live without this one.

Lebowski was on and off my list more times than I can count, but I ultimately decided to sacrifice it. Otherwise, it probably would have gone with my last pick. Solid choice.
