my apologies -- been a little under the weather. Should have had this up hours ago:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

Caught of course in one of those defining draft moments, where I could have a) made a strong statement with my pick; or b) shocked the world (well the board) with my pick; or c) taken one of 2 movies I have ever rated a "10" as my pick, I choose instead to laugh, and laugh hard. The odds of this circling all the way back around to me are not good at all, and so I guess we will just see on the rest. This movie is of course legendary, and yet it remains a bizarre phenomenon -- people either get it and find it to side splittingly pee your pants hilarious, or they don't. And when they don't, I mean its night and day. I once watched this with an early girlfriend on the couch, and she not only did not laugh, she was actively puzzled why I did. Now I ended up doing pretty well on that couch that night, so I am not complaining, but it introduced me to the incredibly black and white, love it or hate it, totally get it or totally do not nature of this film. Fortunately as its 8.5 rating at imdb will indicate, the "get its" far outweigh and this movie retains a huge following more than 30 years after its release. A lot of comedy ages badly, but this stuff was just timeless. And priceless.

Yep, I wondered when this was going to make someone's list. It's only one of the best comedies of all time. Who wants to spend time on their island without some great comedy? :D

Shucks, my #1 ultimate classic comedy just bit the dust ... well played Brick.

For my next pick, I decided to take my own advice and fill the much needed Heroic Quest for Vengence and Sweeping Period Epic niche. But with William Wallace and Maximus Decimus Meridius spoken for ... I'm going with Captain Jack Sparrow.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - 2003

The summer Pirates hit the big screen, it was supposed to be a minor movie among a parade of Blockbusters: The Matrix Reloaded, Terminator 3, The Last Samurai, X-Men 2 and The Hulk to name a few.

But a funny thing happened, Pirates succeed where those movies failed simply by getting the Summer Hit basic formula right: Exciting action scenes, lighthearted comic relief, stylistic but not overbearing special effects, a simple but creative storyline, and characters you cared about, particularly Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow.

It was the first time in a decade I left the theater more excited about a movie than when I went in, and is one of only four films I saw multiple times on the big screen.

Now Capt' Sparrow and I will be marooned on an island where the rum is never gone. At least until we decide to rope ourselves a couple of sea turtles.

P.S. It's funny the Movie Poster boasts "From the producer of Armageddon and Pearl Harbor" as though that's supposed to be a good thing. :D

Ok I want to change course here and pick one of the funniest movies every made about a golf course. I love Bill Murray. He was the movie in my books.

Oh, it is my turn after all. :o

Well, since Brick took my next choice, I have two options. The comedy or the sweeping epic-type film.

Some of the best comedies are going quick, so I think I need to go that way this time and hope what I want to use next will still be available.

I have a couple choices here for the comedy, and I really don't know which way to go. I figure at this point I can't go wrong with:

Young Frankenstein

While not as "slap your knee and laugh out loud" funny as some others, this Mel Brooks movie is classic. A black-and-white parody of the traditional monster flick with a great cast. If I had to miss out on Airplane and Holy Grail, I can't let this one slip by.

I thought Madeline Kahn was especially great here, and Teri Garr was perfect for her role.

One of those movies you can just keep pulling quotes from day and night.

From wiki:

Young Frankenstein is number 28 on Total Film Magazine's "List of the 50 Greatest Comedy Films of All Time", number 56 on Bravo television network's list of the "100 Funniest Movies", number 234 on imdb.com's Top 250 list, and number 13 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 funniest American movies.[2] In 2003, it was deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" by the United States National Film Preservation Board, and selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

Monty Pyton's Life Of Brian (1979)

Seems we have a wave of comedies going so I better get my pick in. Brick already scooped Holly Grail, which makes my choice of which Pyton movie to take really easy. While I think that the Grail movie is much more popular with masses, Life of Brian was the one that got all the critics and film buffs excited, but really there is no difference in quality there, other then obviously more controversial subject of LoB.

I have a feeling that by the time we're done with the draft everyone in the game will have at least one movie with strong Python connection. There is no wrong choices there and they are all extremely re-watchable. There is simply not enough time to watch and laugh AND pay attention to all the jokes first few times around.

I'll spare you the plot synopsis, just in case someone who reads this thread is offended by the premise. And if you avoided this film until now because of controversy and warning like the one in the previous sentence, I urge you to give it a chance.

Hmmm... decisions, decisions... I've still got waaaaaaaaaaay more of my top choices available to me than I expected to at this stage, which has made the strategy angle a little difficult. At the expense of some bigger films that may (or may not? this draft has so far left me baffled), I've decided to go with a film that may have lasted a little longer because it would really sting to lose it completely:

Out of Sight (1998) -- Cool. This movie is just cool as cool can be. The soundtrack, the score, the screenplay, the direction, the laughs, the Clooney... all of it, cool. This is absolutely one of the most watched DVDs in my collection. If I happen to find it on cable, you can bet I'll be stuck to the TV until it's over. The first of a very fruitful Clooney/Soderbergh alliance and, though I like many of their other collaborations, probably still the best. And, as if a dreamy Clooney isn't enough (which, let's be honest, it usually is), this one also features smart and funny performances from Steve Zhan, Don Cheadle, Ving Rhames, and Albert Brooks. Hell, even Jennifer Lopez is good in this one, and that's really saying something.

Wow! This round has featured some GREAT picks!

And Löwenherz? As long as you promise to show Capt. Jack in exchange, I'll promise to keep your island well stocked with rum!

:D

I was worried about this one...

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial [1982]
et.jpg

From Wikipedia - E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 science fiction film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison and starring Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace and Peter Coyote. It tells the story of Elliott (played by Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends a friendly alien, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help the alien return home while attempting to keep it hidden from their mother and the government.

I love this movie. Always reminds me of when I was a young kid and my parents. And I needed a non-creppy/depressing movie pick. ;)

I'm really surprised this movie lasted this long. I thought for sure it would be in the 1st round. Great pick!

But...but E.T. doesn't die at the end! Nor is he chopped up on an autopsy table while the camera pans away to show thousands of other ETs in holding cells waiting for their own deaths. Nor do the aliens retaliate by launching an awful biological weapon which causes the entire population of Earth to melt into puddles of goo.

Just what kind of horribly depressing nihilistic movie island are you running here??

Maybe he does in the special edition director's cut? That stuff may not have tested well in 1982 and Steven had to cut it out and re-shoot a happier whole 'nother ending after the opening credits....

ET didn't make my list, nor can I sit and watch it. There are some movies that have evoke so much emotion that I can't watch them repeatedly. I may have seen this movie twice since I first saw it in the theater. Which either means I am an emotional sap or the movie was beyond amazing, or perhaps both :)

great pick up...

Too bad. ;)

i think he meant non-creepy and non-depressing

One of my favorite movies ever:

chasing_amy_ver1.jpg

Chasing Amy - 1997

I came across this movie whilst I was stationed in Italy; it spoke to me during a particularly turbulent point in my life. I'd never seen a romantic movie take the angle this one did before.

i always liked that movie.. good choice.

my next two picks are somewhat strategic moves and i want to be sure to take them before they are gone. both are pretty recent releases with the first being:

BourneIdentityfilm.jpg

The Bourne Identity- 2002

I'll be the first to admit, even though I liked some of his previous work I was never a big Matt Damon fan. Sure I enjoyed Rounders and Good Will Hunting as much as the next guy, but I was never really convinced that he was a star until the Bourne series came out. I mean, Damon as Jason Bourne kicked some major *** in this movie. He showed that he can be a serious action star and managed to impress the hell out of me while doing so. With some great fight sequences and a fast pace, this movie became a surprise favorite of mine.

and with the first pick of the 4th round another movie i am taking earlier than some of my older favorites because i'm just not sure how long it would last:

Snatch_special_edition_DVD.jpg

Snatch- 2000

One of my favorite Brad Pitt movies, this one gets the nod over it's predecessor because Pitt steals the show as the pikey and this movie is all around good times. I figure if I find myself stuck on an island looking for entertainment, this movie has buttloads of it to offer.

As long as I'm in the neighborhood, let me go ahead and take my second-favorite Kevin Smith movie, too:

Clerks.jpg

Clerks - 1994

This movie had been out for almost three years before I'd ever heard of it. One of my favorite comedies of all time.

Never seen it. Just added it to my Blockbuster queue. ;)

Alright, good round, draft board all up to date. Glad to see this thing is shaping up nicely. One thing that is strange to me is that it we seem to be going through draft fads.

First it was the sweeping epic fad, now everyone's picking good old cooky comedies. Just coincidence or are people remembering movies from other people's picks? I'll admit I sure am.

Can a mod once again update the thread title, thanks.

I'm not following any fads; I just wanted to get those four out of the way before I got into the meat of my draft; things are going to take a turn when it comes back to me in the fifth...

No fads here, either. My list was put together based solely on which movies from my collection I watch the most. The only strategy/shuffling has come from trying to anticipate how quickly everything will be taken.

I've also been fad-less..the only thing I would say has influenced me has been the decision I made to take All The President's Men when I did instead of the movie I had decided I wanted to go with after having a few days to make a few different top fives. I will admit to looking at the list of movies drafted to see if it was time to go that off the beaten path, at least for the reason why I enjoy that particular film. I still may reshuffle again, I haven't resolved that inner discussion I've been having with myself yet :)

I wasn't so much following fads, as I was scrambling to secure some personal favorites I thought would be safe until much later in the draft.

Löwenherz? As long as you promise to show Capt. Jack in exchange, I'll promise to keep your island well stocked with rum!

:D

Deal! And I'm sure the Cap'n and I can count on commandeering your vote come playoff time.

Commandeer; it's a nautical term. ;)
