Either the people of KingsFans.com have no appreciation for the frivolous, or people are camping out at AFI and Oscar websites. The "epic" quotient is nuts 'round these parts.

Hey, like in a fantasy hoops draft, you pick the rare commodities first.

I'd be going pretty much all frivolous which I think is largely why I sat out. I'd still have gone after LA Confidential and possibly one or two others that have gone so far. Give it another round or two.

I resent that! Pulp Fiction is the epitome of cinematic junk food frivolously celebrating pop culture. It's admired simply because it's beautifully crafted and revolutionarily designed cinematic junk food.

As for Apocalypse Now, it's my favorite movie AND just happens to be rather critically acclaimed. But it's one of maybe only five movies AFI and I actually agree on.

I would have picked it as my number one overall regardless of the draft rules: "Movie you'd take on a desert island", "Favorite War Epic", "Best movie that mostly takes place on a boat" whatever, it was going to be my number one.

And besides, there'd be a lot more quality frivilous choices if you weren't busy swiping them from underneath my feet Mrs. Tyler Durden.

I think that was more a dig at my pick, but, seriously, regardless of what AFI or anyone says, Lawrence of Arabia is a must have for my collection; I just figure it's rating as one of the great films of all time would make it a hot commodity in the draft so I needed to pick it up early.

What a silly notion, people picking consensus all-time great movies as their early picks.

I don't get it either.

D-Mass is the only thing that stands between me and two of my favourite (and IMO best) films of my lifetime. I have 3 on my mind, so no matter what happens it's a win-win. Can't wait! I like this better than the music thread!

I bet I can guess your picks:
Leonard Part 6
Gigli

I have a terrified feeling dime dropper has his eye on one or both of the two I'm hoping to take with my next two picks.

Evil hands-off vibe

Gigli

I can assure you I've never even heard of those films! Remember, I'm just a baby amidst a sea of wise old men (and women) on this board! The films I'm thinking of are relatively new, and only one of the three isn't from the 00s. I shall give no more away than that!

haha, how old are you dime? btw....he was joking, all of those movies are terrible.

Oh, and Gigli is fairly recent as well. So you can't blame not knowing it on your age. It actually became quite popular for being one of the worst reviewed movies ever.

I'm 17. I'm sure I'll lose alot of credibility on the main boards for sharing my youth, but it won't affect me! I'm pretty mature for my age.

I'm not from America, so maybe that's why I've never heard of those movies. Doesn't seem like much of a loss!

I just turned 18 a few months ago. So, its no big deal. Sure, plenty of people here are older, but as long as you don't go around picking Lil' Bow Wow movies I think you'll be okay.

What are you talking about? "Like Mike" was going to be my next pick... :D

No big deal, but there are always going to be a few posters who think because you're young you don't know your stuff. There's no chance of me picking any Bow Wow! I think my taste in movies is pretty good. We'll see.

Also, this is a game where you pick the movies YOU would want on a desert island... so how can you make a wrong pick?

I was talking about the main boards with regards to basketball knowledge, but your point still stands! I agree, in this thread their are no wrong picks.

... or was that rhetorical?

Next pick!

Apollo 13 - 1995

I'm a physical and life science teacher so I'm going to have a fair amount of science films in my picks. This is regarded as one of the most scientifically accurate films of all time and it just happens to be a pretty unbelievable story. I show it in my physics classes every year to wrap up our astronomy unit and to reflect on concepts of motion and forces. A great movie, and one that I definitely need on my island.

Wasn't a dig at anyone/anyone's pick, for the record. Just a general snarky comment based on the fact that this draft is not at all going the way I would have assumed at the beginning.

Yay! My two films escaped unscathed.

OK, my next pick is ;

the-departed.jpg

The Departed (2006)
What can I say? I thought this would be taken in the 1st round. Obviously not a fan favourite of the Kings! I thought this was a great movie. Great director, great cast, great acting and great storyline. This film had everything. Twists, turns etc. Huge hit worldwide. Really didn't expect it to be here. Will probably be looked back on as a classic in years to come. Recieved alot of hype, but I think it lived up to it.

I also have the next pick...excellent! This is a toughie, because there is another film as well as the one I'm about to pick, that I really love. Ultimately, there is only one I can go for! This is it ;

Boyz N Da Hood (1991)
Seriously, if you haven't seen the film don't even think about judging this pick. So here's the story ; About a year ago, I rented this film having never seen it before. The idea was that I was bored and since I hadn't seen it, it would pass a couple hours. I really wasn't expecting much as it isn't really the type of film I'd go for. This film struck me so hard that it's something I'll never forget. It is more than just a film about a group of young men from the 'hood. It is more than just another violent, gangster film. This has a deeper meaning, a deeper story than what appears on the surface. The acting is harsh and inspiring. You get so involved in the film that for a few hours you experience the lives of these young men (at least I did). It hit me hard. It instantly became one of my favourite films of all time. After watching it I sat back and thought "Wow, that was not what I was expecting". 16 years after the film was released it still had this impact. It stood, and will continue to stand, the test of time. It was nominated for many awards and was widely recognised as a very influential film. I could write about if for much longer, but I won't bore everyone. If you haven't seen it, watch it. Watch it with an open mind and watch it closely. No distractions.
Unless you're offended easily by language or violence, in which case don't watch it. However, it does have a story and this is just an all round great film. It will make you think about life.

Alright nice picks. I thought the Departed was a taaad overrated. It was really, really good mind you but its just another gangster film at its heart. Except maybe with a slightly more complicated story.

The ending was surprising though, and I'm glad it finally got Scorsese a best Director.

Though he did a better job, in the better movie of its kind, Goodfellas. If you liked Departed and haven't seen Goodfellas, you are doing yourself a disservice.

Also, can a mod change the title to 3rd round, thanks.

this movie was on my list, but i figured someone (looks at ggg:p) would snag it before it got back to me. this movie just seemed to come out at the right time and hit alot of all the right issues. i'm surprised you had not seen it till a year ago, but not at all surprised it would make anyones list.

and to whoever picked the usual suspects, thanks for ruining my life. a couple years ago, i picked this movie as my favorite. life without Keyser Söze is gonna suck. oh and kevin spacey is phenomenal in this movie. easily my favorite performance of his.

Solid picks, dime...

Here's my third round pick:

Swingers - 1996

Swingers_ver2.jpg

A bit high for some people, but a must have for me. I actually didn't see this until 2001 or so when I was living in Los Angeles and I think it is a better movie if you've lived in LA.; the late night trek to Vegas, the bumper-to-bumper caravan of cars into the Hollywood Hills for a party with each car containing only the driver (nobody walks in LA, and people don't carpool either...), Cafe 101, The Dresden, The Derby, etc. Great movie, great cast of fairly unknowns at the time: Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Heather Graham, etc. Launched a lot of careers and made a lot of money for only a $250,000 budget. Love every minute of it.
