Good pick -- it was a pure two horse horror race for me betwen Alien and The Thing. There just are no other viable competitiors, and it makes me beyond sad that I can say that 25-30 years after those two classics came out. I was even thinking of opening up a full on horror wing with both of them in it, but unless I get to bring along my hot babes to snuggle with, I didn't want the nightmares. ;)

@$$%^#@#@$$@#^^%&&^*$@#%@$#. Dammit Brick, you had to take it, didn't you....

Call it a saavy gamble on your part and leave it at that.

Oh Warhawk...you almost make me feel bad. :p

Then I remember that you snuck up to take Ferris and Demolition Man, and my sympathy rapidly evaporates.

Ok my next pick is a comedy classic

American Pie 1999

That scene says it all. I think Jim's dad (Eugene Levy) and Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott) are comic gold. It does not matter how many times I watch this movie I still laugh.

Despite being a Buffy/Angel nut and having this film recommended to me countless times (including by you on more than one occasion), I'm embarrassed to admit that I still haven't seen it. :o

Methinks it may be time to move it up in my Blockbuster queue.

If you're a Buffy/Angel nut bump the Firefly series up ahead of it so that you can get full appreciation of the movie. Were only 14 of them shot, and I think at least 10 of those 14 were gold. The pilot was a little wonky (and may have cost the series its life) but after that...makes you want to vomit that people were watching Survivor 15 and The Bachelor instead.

Done.

Probably won't have a chance to watch it until I'm done with summer classes, but I should be getting the first discs in a couple of days.

Speaking of Harrison Ford, one of the most torturous movies I ever sat through starred Harrison Ford. (1999) I'm generally a fan too, but man this one was awful. (Withholding title just in case someone is thinking about it, though I doubt it)

I think I know the movie you're talking about and if you got through all of that movie, you got further than I did...

After being one of the biggest stars of the 80s and early 90s, I am trying to think of any movie of Harrison's post 1995 that wasn't torturous. There was a reason he faded away there until they revived Indy.

although he was quite good in the jimmy kimmel video "i'm f****** ben affleck." :D

At this point I have 2 movies I'm picking from, but I think the other will slide, so I'll choose:

Spaceballs - 1987

I wanted to nail this comedy for the "Island Spoof Comedy Night" movie double feature. My second and final Mel Brooks movie. Plenty of more "romantic" movies to choose from later. ;)

It stars Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Dick Van Patten, Joan Rivers, Michael Winslow, and Dom DeLuise.

A list of movies parodied in this film is full of classics: Star Wars (the main movie parodied), Star Trek, Alien, and Planet of the Apes, among others. The comedy is great and comes at you fast.

Here's hoping I am paying Brick back for Serenity. :p And do yourself a favor, watch the Firefly series first (Serenity is based off the TV series Firefly). I saw Serenity and liked it so much I bought Firefly without seeing it first - that's how much I liked Serenity.

Colonel Sandurz: Prepair ship for light speed.
Dark Helmet: No, no, no. Light speed is too slow.
Colonel Sandurz: Light speed is too slow?
Dark Helmet: Yes. We're gonna have go right to... ludicrous speed.
[everybody gasps]
Colonel Sandurz: Ludicrous speed? Sir, we've never gone that fast before. I do'nt know if this ship can take it.
Dark Helmet: What's the matter Colonel Sandurz? Chicken?

Lone Starr: What the hell was that noise?
Dot Matrix: That was my virgin-alarm. It's programmed to go off before you do!

Commanderette Zircon: Shall I have Snotty beam you down, sir?
President Skroob: I don't know about this beaming stuff? Is it safe?
Commanderette Zircon: Oh yes, sir. Snotty beamed me twice last night. It was wonderful.

Dark Helmet: You have the ring, and I see your Schwartz is as big as mine. Let's see how well you handle it.

Dark Helmet: [breathes heavily, Darth Vader-style] I can't breathe in this thing!

I have been going out of my skin the last few days waiting to make this pick, for the record. It's a movie that I left off my original list just because I was certain it wouldn't make it to my first pick. When, shortly after my most recent pick, I realized that I didn't remember anyone actually picking it, I had to check the draft board about five times just to make sure -- I was that stunned to find it still available.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) -- And here's where I just have to assume that this was a massive oversight on the part of... well, everyone. Despite the darkness, violence, and weirdness of most of the rest of my list, I like to laugh, too, and this movie definitely gets me. Before Rob Reiner got whisked away by sappy chick flicks and anti-on-screen-smoking campaigns, he directed and co-wrote one of the first, and probably still the best, of the "mockumentary" genre. As with the Christopher Guest & Co. comedies that have followed (another startling ommission here, as far as I'm concerned), the tone is spot on. Every little detail is perfect, the writing is brilliant, and the performances are hilarious (and NEVER played for laughs -- the secret to all great humor). My island is now "one louder." Stranded life is starting to look pretty good.

I didn't really care for it. It had moments. But that was about it for me. Just, eh. Felt like I wasted my time with it.

Okay, a quite notorious movie back in the day (and my day goes pretty far back :p), but you were worried somebody was going to nab it first round in 2008? Even I was just a young'un when it came out, and some of our drafters were probably still just gleams in daddy's eye. ;)

Yes, I did.

But I'll gladly continue to misjudge everyone here if it means I get to keep all of my movies.

Besides... I was only six when it came out.

Oh, I think it is imminently draftable and am not at all surprised to see somebody take it, I just was assuming round one was going to be more of Godfather/Casablanca/Star Wars/Pulp Fiction etc. type monsters (I was not entirely right either, and of course thought I was being sneaky bucking how I thought things were going to go right from the start).

Wow...that was an interesting run of comedies...I barely can say I've seen Spaceballs, I've been told how funny and must see A Fish Called Wanda and Spinal Tap are, and I have managed to still not see either...I may need to get on that some day :)

Austin Powers, gone.
American Pie, gone.
Spinal Tap, gone.
Spaceballs, gone.

did someone post my list somewhere?

Yep, I knew coming in that Bozz was going to be one of the consistent threats to my portfolio through this thing. :(

BTW, I did watch Princes Bride like you recommended last TDOS and it was everything you said it would be. Thanks. I think it's safe to mention it now as everything from your list from last year is gone now.

i know i've been slacking on getting on the comedy bandwagon here, but geez, i didn't expect both spinal tap and space balls to be gone. both were on my list.

Well that's too famous a movie not to be in danger from somebody at some point. Not me, mind you. But somebody. ;)

I don't think this pick was really in any danger, but I figured I'd go here with it anyway. You just never can tell

2001: A Space Odyssey
2001_A_Space_odyssey.gif

Two words sum up this movie - "Hello Dave"

Wiki site if anyone is interested.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001:_A_Space_Odyssey_(film)

Every round so far, I passed on it thinking that it would be picking it too high in this particular draft. This is my all time favorite movie and I cannot possibly imagine there being a better movie in my lifetime, or ever. Almost every aspect of it is perfect for me. For me, this game is over, you win.

Now I have to go and change my PIN on all my accounts... Damn you... ;)

This is kind of a borderline pick for me: some might make the case that it's not really a kung fu movie, as it doesn't have a lot of action in terms of hand-to-hand. But, it makes up for it with lots of bloody swordplay, which is another important element of kung fu classics. It is also chock-full of dialogue and other imagery that is an homage to classic kung fu movies.

With my ninth round pick, I select:
