Simple Win-Win Trade: OKC and Sac

Chad Ford mentioned in his chat today that he thought OKC would be willing to trade Nick Collison and a #1 for an expiring contract. Put aside any vitriol you have for Chad Ford for a moment and consider the following:

Kings Trade: Kenny Thomas 8.5M expiring
OKC Trade: Nick Collison 6.25M this year, 6.75M next year. #1 pick (20 or 21 currently), plus whatever smattering of expirings they have to make it all even up.

Why OKC does it: Clearing Collison's cap number for next year puts them in play for a max contract free agent. Bosh would be the perfect fit, but almost any of the top 6 or 7 FA's legitimately vaults them into title contender territory. Losing the pick doesn't hurt too much because they have another #1 and are aleady loaded to the gills with young talented prospects at virtually every position.

Why Sac does it: Collison's a solid defensive player and rebounder who can swing between the 4/5 spots. He's not the shot-blocking eraser we're looking for, but he's a pretty solid upgrade. Similar player to Pollard. The #1 makes it an easy win.

Well I would love to pick up another first round pick. Not much of a risk involved other than extending our expiring to 2011. I might do it as a last minute deal if nothing else comes up thats better.

Another potential reason for OKC

Clears enough cap space they could eat someone like Al Jefferson's contract and send back something starting with Jeff Green or James Harden.

Point being that even though it seems like a big winner for us, it really helps them too.

If we got one more year of Collison at $6.75M and a pick around 20, that's about as much as we can ask out of KT. Collison won't be The Answer but can give us minutes relatively cheaply, and I like the pick. I'd do it if there wasn't something better in the pipeline.

Now that would work. He is a career 6-7 reb/gm player, seems consistent, decent size. Wonder how much a banger he is down low vs. our Brockness. Makes sense for OKC as K9 can help them in short term and they dump nearly $9M in salary this summer. Hmmmm ;)

THis really helps them in the LeBron sweepstakes because their wings suck........

Oh wait.

They could be angling for Bosh, who's a semi-local guy.

I don't know I would like the pick. But essentially I think we would just be paying 6.7 mil next year for a guy that is no better than Brockman.

I like Collison more than I like Murphy for us because there would be no misconceptions about him taking major minutes from the kids like we've seen sub par vets do in the past.

Im a big fan of getting more picks in this draft. I think there's good frontcourt depth to be had and having another pick or two would be amazing with how GP drafts.

Yeah, there could definitely be some decent defensive big prospects at the Thunder pick--Sanders, Alabi, Varnado... I do this deal and don't look back.

Thats one way to look at it for sure, but I tend to see it this way:

Were essentially buying a mid to late first round pick for 6.7 mil of capspace for 1 year. Thats an agressive move that proves we arent still in "save every dollar" mode. Its a move that can send a message to the fans that they'll still spend the money when they think its worth it. I like it.

Its the same Idea as a deal with NY ( one that I have been talking about for a while ) Give us Jeffries (2 more years ) or Curry ( one more year ) along with a pick and Gallo or Hill for K9/whatever expirings it takes. Give the Knicks there capspace and give us our young talent.

The way I see it, were better off not signing anyone significant this offseason anyways. I rather let our guys develop for another year or 2 and then go out and sign a guy that we need.

I like this, it gives us another year to develop our players and since it will be during a lockout(??) year we may be able to snag someone like we did with Vlade.
