Chad Ford mentioned in his chat today that he thought OKC would be willing to trade Nick Collison and a #1 for an expiring contract. Put aside any vitriol you have for Chad Ford for a moment and consider the following:
Kings Trade: Kenny Thomas 8.5M expiring
OKC Trade: Nick Collison 6.25M this year, 6.75M next year. #1 pick (20 or 21 currently), plus whatever smattering of expirings they have to make it all even up.
Why OKC does it: Clearing Collison's cap number for next year puts them in play for a max contract free agent. Bosh would be the perfect fit, but almost any of the top 6 or 7 FA's legitimately vaults them into title contender territory. Losing the pick doesn't hurt too much because they have another #1 and are aleady loaded to the gills with young talented prospects at virtually every position.
Why Sac does it: Collison's a solid defensive player and rebounder who can swing between the 4/5 spots. He's not the shot-blocking eraser we're looking for, but he's a pretty solid upgrade. Similar player to Pollard. The #1 makes it an easy win.
