Rubio might stay in spain for another year or two according to his dad

People seem to be equating refusing to play for a team and deciding to play overseas until his contract runs out. International players do it all the time.

Yes, but only the children like Fran Vasquez actually say they are coming over, and then abruptly change their mind. Another mama's boy from Spain too, maybe something cultural. I think this may be some of the stuff that got Rubio in some trouble in this draft. Don't want to work out. Only want to go certian places. Maybe I come over maybe I don't. You've got to be a lot more of a surefire star than Rubio is to be able to pull that kind of stuff.

What is up with Rubio trying to walk all over the NBA ? Talk about a false sense of entitlement.

No its not. He is already under contract with another team, and if he is going to pay the buyout in large part out of his own pocket it has to be a good situation and make sense. Playing for a team that also drafted a top 3 pg (in this draft) doesn't make much sense for rubio or the twolves.

If he weren't paying 4 million dollars out of his pocket to play in the NBA I would agree with you.

He will get his money but refusing to work out for teams (at first). Talks down Memphis. Now he is talking down Minn.

He should sign his contract and play. He gives me the vibe that everyone should bow down to him because he will be next great thing in the nba. He seems to be looking past his rookie contract and waiting for a max deal before has stepped on the court.

Reminds me alot like Yi and he turned out terrible.

He needs to stfu and play. Who cares where you going or how many minutes you get. This is the NBA you have to earn your money and respect.

Rubio isn't NBA ready not only because of his body. He still has a very boyish demeanor where it seems like mom and dad has to take care of his everything once he steps off the court.

I really don't see Americans who are raised to be more macho and older guys in the league will listen to a guy that looks and acts like a kid still in many ways.

He will be a good player, but I just don't see why so many believes he is better than Evans when he hasn't shown anything.

I agree he and his agent overplayed their hand, but now he's going to make just over 3M while making payments against his 4-6M buyout? All to play for a team that just drafted 2 pure point guards in a row? In the freezing cold no less. I'm quite sure this is far from the scenario they hoped for.

Well I don't blame him. He has to pay 4-6 Mil of his own money to play here, it better be where he wants to play.

Whos fault is that ?

Someone in his massive camp should of tried to have a little foresight a couple of years ago.

He hasnt proven anything yet. No reason is good enough for an 18 year old to act like a punk and try to be bigger than some teams.

http://blogs.twincities.com/timberwolves/2009/06/rubios-father-staying-in-europ.html

The Timberwolves will hold a 3 p.m. news conference today to introduce first-round draft choices Jonny Flynn of Syracuse and Wayne Ellington of North Carolina.

No. 1 pick Ricky Rubio won't be in attendance.

Wolves president of basketball of operations David Kahn, through a team spokesman, cautioned not to ready anything into that, but there are plenty of questions about whether Rubio will end up signing with and playing for Minnesota this season or return to his Spanish team.

Rubio's father suggested the latter after the Wolves made the flashy point guard the No. 5 overall selection in Thursday night's NBA draft.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper Marca, the elder Rubio said: "He might go now or he might remain (in Europe) one more year ... or even two. It's all open, although the most likely scenario is that he stays in Europe more time. We have to talk with the folks in Minnesota ... and see what happens, because, at this point, we can go to Minnesota or otherwise."

Rubio has a $6.6 million contract buyout with his Spanish team and said after being selected by the Wolves that he isn't sure he will play in the NBA this season.

The Wolves took Flynn, another point guard, with the pick after Rubio, and many already are speculating that one eventually will be traded, even though Kahn said he believes they can play in the same backcourt together.

I think Rubio was killed yesterday. He is a young kid and I am sure that it is tough for him but he will overcome it.

I do not think (and I might be wrong) that Evans was so much better or even just better than Ricky but Evans was a safe pick and he is here and ready to play and the Maloofs and GP are too scared now to gamble.

GP: I have only 1 year on my contract and this team sucks big time. One more year like that and I am out. The Maloofs will never sign me and give the job to that young assistant of mine. What if we cannot bring Ricky to the Kings this year; what if he needs at least 1 year for cultural and language adaptation??! Either way I do not have a lot of time!! We need something and we need something good now. No way I will risk my future ... so, my pick is Evans.

The Maloofs: We are losing money, attendance is terrible, people hate us and 09/10 might be even more catastrophical. Ricky is the guy who can bring fans back, gives us national attention and ESPN highlights. But what if we cannot bring him this year? What if he is not that good, what if cannot play that good in NBA? We wanna have a star and it seems like Ricky is a rock star of basketball, he is everything we want but we cannot afford another terrible year. It will kill us. We need something and we need something good now. We should call GP and tell him to pick someone who is here, who will be here and who will help us this year somehow. If Rubio is not here because of his buyout, we are done. Fans will hate us. We cannot afford a 8000-in-attendance season. Evans .... GP ... pick Evans!!!!!!!!!!

I know it sounds rediculous and I guess it is. Just a pure speculation from my side but IMHO I think it was pretty close to that. May be different words but it was just a safer pick in times when mistakes can be lethal for both the Maloofs and GM.

Fair enough (on possibly saying one thing and doing another) but we'll have to see what he eventually decides to do instead of just taking all these comments from other people around him as gospel.

It's a money problem, it's not a "mama-boy" attitude.

He can't resolve his contract situation being picked up under number 4.

The point is that his contract with his actual team says that whoever wants him, has to pay a fixed amount of money to the team. That's how player's market works here.

Juan Carlos Navarro's situation was similar last year, and that's why he returned to Spain: he was losing a LOT of money because he was paying himself a crazy amount of money that usually is payed by the teams that pick up the player, not by players. As he returned to the same team he owed the money, they cancel the debt.

So what Ricky was going to do is pay himself his all that money (that's an amount of money that usually is payed by teams, not by players, but being picked in a 1-3 position assures enough salary to pay it). His salary being #5 is'nt enough to pay himself all that money. So he has to wait until his contract expires.

That's the story.

7999 now :(

Father isn't renewing. I stopped going to games after Webber was traded and didn't renew my season ticket.. I was going to go in with someone the year before last but decided against it..

Father went to Memphis, and is a HUGE Memphis BBall fan and this caused him not to renew. It's going to be a tough year for the Kings as a team, and an organization.

I know it's not a huge deal, but for the 1st time ever I had my money ready to buy league pass if Rubio was the pick. That money stays in my pocket now.

I love watching ball movement so Rubio was my style of guy. I only enjoy the one on one style when it is a spectacular athlete that plays above the rim - Wade and Lebron type althletes. Evans is not an above the rim player. I'm optimistic about Evans but not excited, so no league pass for me. They'll get over it, but I imagine many small decisions like that are being made today.

rubio better stay in spain get better on his shot and expand his game... then GP will be there waiting

hopefully

minnesota messed things up by picking a starting 5 of pointguards.. maybe they will hire don nelson. nelson gets his dream of playing ultra small ball.

I say keep him there and we will keep Tyreke. He would have done the same to us. So why should we trade for him.
Are you for certain Rubio would have done the same if the Kings had selected him. I don't think so. Rubio wanted to be in Sacramento. Did you see the look on his face when the Kings selected Tyreke Evan. You could see that he was disappointed.

I assume the Kings aren't talking to Minny about offering some of our swings for Rubio simply out of pride. Which is silly. If you had a chance to get both guards, why not? The Kings could have packaged a deal for the fifth pick than Foye and Miller, and I assume they would have taken Rubio/Evans. You take out the risk associated with Rubio by doing it.

minnesota needs a SG right now.. and a C badly

we can exploit them half way into the season assuming they havent dealt rubio... all i can say is THANK the heavens he didnt slip past the twolves.. he could have been to the warriors

The best part is now when Rubio does come over he's going to have something to prove to the Kings front office. Expect to be killed by Ricky Rubio for several years to come. Unless the Timberwolves go Darko on him.

I'm kind of sick of all the pining for Rubio but if we trade Martin in some kind of Rubio deal I guess it would be interesting.

I know 99% it wont happen, but I think the kings should at least call the Wolves and see what they want for Rubio.

Even if we did, and I'd say it is VERY unlikely, but even if we did would Rubio want to come play for us after we passed on him?

He was rather screwed over by the Kings.

"La verdad es que los Kings de Sacramento me querían mucho y me hice esa idea"

translated: "The truth is that the Sacramento Kings really wanted me and I got used to that idea"

When he said that his financial situation was worked out, it was pretty much said with the idea that he'd be picked by the Kings at #4. He had worked out a deal that would work financially at the salary of a #4 pick. When the Kings suddenly passed on him, he had no deal with his Euro team anymore. He was back to financial limbo basically.

I was fascinated by him and would have welcomed him had he become a King but I'm not really happy with all the whining, etc. No, he wasn't screwed over by the Kings. If he bought into all the hype and smoke being blown his direction by the media types such as Voisin I'm sorry for him, BUT I do not think the Kings ever made any kind of indication that he was, in fact, the focus of all their attention.

If he had worked out a deal for the #4 salary, then I think his agent was pretty assured he wouldn't fall farther than that.

I think the situation was that he knew he could be taken #2 or #3 and that other teams were offering trades for the #2 to take him. The Kings at #4 was his safe spot beyond that. So he worked with JV on a buyout that worked at that salary level. The Kings had asked him to workout twice. He wasn't their only interest obviously.

People just didn't think he'd slip that far. It's been reported that the Knicks had a deal to get the #5 from the Wizards but were sure that Rubio would be gone by then, so Donnie Walsh passed.

And I don't think it's fair to call him whiny. He's blogged that Madrid has offered him a contract to stay in Euro but he has declined it because he wants to come to the NBA. He just can't come here until he renegotiates with his current team.
