Limited training camp will hurt Kings

Now that it looks like an NBA season may yet get underway in 2011, we are looking at a super limited training camp period. There are few team who will be hurt by this rush more than the Kings, given that we have some potentially pivitol new players coming in (JJ and Jimmer and hopefully a FA steal) who will have an immediate impact on team chemistry. Plus, we'll (hopefully) be experimenting with some current players assuming different kinds of roles on the team (Evans off the ball more?). In other words, I think it's going to be messy before the gel sets. Schedule is still unknown, but I'm assuming wins will be hard to come by early. Thoughts?

Heck, I'm just excited for some bbball. Oh, and free agency. :D

Worried about the young guys, without any sort of coaching and alot of free time they could be out of shape. But we do have some solid vets to rely on, lets see what free agency holds for us.

We said that the lack of training camp would kill the Niners and look what happened. You never know what could be in store.

Frankly, right now I don't give a tinkers damm about how much training camp or lack there of will hurt the Kings. Maybe tomorrow! But right now, I'm happy!

One bad year might not be too bad in such a deep draft. However, our next focus is showing enough support and getting an arena.

On the flip side as a young team with a lot of young depth, we might be able to withstand the highly compressed schedule better than the veteran teams who are going to run out of fresh legs.

Will they change the current NBA schedule or keep it as it is? Cus they probably will change it to make all the games fit in and everything, right? I wonder when they will display that.

It's Jimmer time!

I must admit I'm worried about Tyreke's foot though

Since the season is a shortened one, how do they decide what games are done away with? I'm assuming it would be the ones that have already been missed, but just want confirmation.

From a selfish POV, a good thing about the tight schedule is less waiting around for us fans. And I think the youth of our team, as Brick pointed out, could help us. This is a very good year to have a poor record, so I'm torn. Of course I want us to win as many as possible, but one bad season here record-wise wouldn't hurt. Most important thing is getting an arena done and I hope people don't forget that.

I thought I read that they will make a new schedule instead of just chopping off what is passed. I'm sure we'll hear more on this shortly.

I don't think it will be an entirely new schedule, because switching up arena booking dates will be tricky. There will probably be added dates for everybody, but I'd guess the vast majority of games scheduled past Xmas will be played as scheduled.

Agreed, but they will not (from what I thought I read) just stick with the schedule "as is" for dates after Christmas. There will be additions/adjustments.

Other than the three games on christmas day, I think they'll have to come up with an almost new schedule. The schedule has to be somewhat balanced as to interconference and division games. This can probably be done to some extent by keeping the same arena date, but by changing the team your playing on that date. Also, some of the arena dates have to be changed since I'm sure, as in the last lockout, there will be back to back to back games.

I have no doubt that the league already has an outline of the new schedule in place. Also, its been mentioned that it might benefit the Kings to have another bad season. Well if the draft age limit remains the same, thats true. But if they go to a 2 yrs of college rule, then the next draft will be one of the weakest in the history of the league. So we ought to wait and see what the outcome is before adding anything draft related to our wish list.

If we resign Marcus, our guard depth this year may be good enough to endure any missed games by Tyreke (Marcus/Jimmer/Salmons/Thomas).

That's true, but do you really want our star guard missing a big number of games for the second time in only his 3rd season? Hopefully it's all healed, but from what I know, injuries like these rarely go away fully. I think Westphal will have to manage Tyreke's minutes when it comes to backtobacktobacks

A few comments on stuff that has been talked about in this thread ..

Evans says he's healthy. I've heard it multiple times that his foot is ready to go.

I think we CAN work this short season to our advantage. Will we? I dont know, but I like the fact that we have young legs and solid depth at just about every position. And it seems as though none of our major players got completely out of shape. And I suppose having the same coach, even if it is a coach I don't believe in, is a good thing.

I agree that bringing in the same coach and the same system (what's our system again...?) will make it easier for us. Imagine the Warriors who not only have a new coach, but a new coach who's never been a coach before. *shudder*
They are probably going to have a very difficult time getting anything new implemented.

Our guys are young, and I would have preferred to have had a nice long training camp for them to gel with the new guys and perhaps figure out how to better play together, but as long as everyone stayed in good shape, hopefully it won't be too hard on them in the early going of the season.

After we win it all, will everyone discount it just as they did when SA won in the 50 game season?

I don't want an asterisk next to our first title run.

It's likely, but I wouldn't worry about any serious contention for the championship this year. Playoffs? Possible. I see us being very competitive starting next year.

Yeah, I was being a smart***. If we challenge for a ring, it's only because the top 10 teams went down in a plane crash.

I think it will hurt the Kings too IMO. This team needs some serious continuity and time to mesh as much as possible. Especially our two top players.

The opposite. Since Westfail doesn't have a system there is nothing for the players to learn. Just throw the ball out there.

Well, the last strike shortened season produced the greatest run in sac kings history. If I remember correctly, that team featured a new coach, major new additions via the draft, trade and free agency. I cant remember, but im guessing at least 50% turnover in the team from the prior year. It may not have been an excellent team that first year, but they were the excitement of the league and made the playoffs. Predicting what will happen in a strike shortened season is pretty unreliable.
