When you bring in a player like Marcus Smart you hope that someone like Giles or Skal can spread the floor to offer Fox and Smart driving lanes.

I think the FO is betting on Fox improving his shot with a Smart signing. It might be ugly next season, but if Fox can get consistent from outside, a Fox/Smart back court pairing could be pretty dang feisty down the road!

Personally, I'm not sure I'd tell any reporter anything if I was in the midst of preparing an offer. :p I've praised Jones a lot lately but, as with previous Kings beat reporters, they aren't always party to in the inner workings of the front office. I think it's still worth pondering.
 
paying a defensive player 15 million per is just too much for my liking, he is still young and has upside to develop the outside shot but I don't think the interest is mutual between the two

My guess is Kings are interested but Smart isn't... he's been a big part of the Celtics rebuild and deep playoff runs. Money may win out, we'll see.

There's no market for Smart outside of Boston... has anyone stopped for a second to wonder why? Yes teams are limited on cap space, but he's a RFA. Boston hasn't presented him with an offer yet. They're letting him see what he can get in the open market before they talk money. Seems like he's getting very little interest, so his agent has put out rumors about the Kings.

As I said again, Smart makes no sense for this team. He is Tony Allen at best. He's a defensive specialists for a playoff team. He has "excelled" in a Brad Stevens system that made Isaiah Thomas a legitimate MVP candidate. A Brad Stevens system that would've made Jae Crowder a max player in the 2016 or 2017 FA market.

I seriously can't buy this idea of having 3 non-shooters on the floor at the same time. That's hideoous basketball in 2018. I don't care if you add Collison, Ariza, or whoever else. You're still going to have Fox-Smart-Bagley/Giles/WCS in your lineup. That's 3 non-shooters. It doesn't matter who you fill in between. I still count 3.

Where are these magical shooters located for us to sign? There are no rules to what you should sign first. There’s no set order. This team hasn’t won over 35 games in like a decade. At this point, we need it ALL, and especially on the defensive end and mental toughness area. Guys like Smart or even Artest who we acquired in 06, can only rub off on others and make an impact on the playing style and culture itself unlike any offensive specialist would do.

That’s nothing to scoff at. It’s beyond stats and what looks pretty
 
Smart does impact the game in a lot of good ways. Plus, in some ways, he's exactly the kind of player we need to give a bit of a swagger to the team. We have added couple such players recently in Fox, Giles, and probably even Bagley. If we add someone like Smart, it adds to the critical mass, and hopefully starts rubbing on the rest of the team.

That said, his shooting his atrocious, and he is a high turnover guy (per basketball-reference.com, last year he made 127 turnovers in 1614 minutes. To be fair, Fox made 173 turnovers in 2026 minutes, so perhaps I'm being too harsh on Smart. I'm giving Fox a bit of a pass since he was a rookie). He also plays a position where we need least help). So, I'll be wary of committing too much money on him. While I think 15M would be a bit too high, it might be okay if he brings the same fire and passion we saw in Boston.
 
The most I'd pay Smart is 3 years, 10 MM per year. I like him, but it's discouraging that his 3 pt shot is still sub 0.300.
I say throw 20MM per year at Capela and get it over with! Bagley can play 3 according to our GM! haha

This thread ain't dead til I say it's dead. :p We've got some 100+ comments about Smart. If people want to stop talking about him, the thread will drop off but I'm not gonna close it or anything.
 
The only argument I heard is that because Frank Mason III doesn't seem to be good enough as a back up (after, what, 4 Summer League games) So we should bring in Smart. Except IMO I'm not willing to give up my starting guards to make room for him. And I doubt he'd want to come and be a back-up PG.

This move is just simply, not smart.

lol yeah this is exactly what I thought afterwards we are waiting for the next Carl Landry/Belenlli/Z-Bo signing why on earth would we bring in a player going into his prime (unless he's consistantly on the brink of a knee injury) who gives us the toughness/heart/defense we have lacked for 10 years. O well onto next season talking about how we are going to sign impact players when everyone else has money as well.

They go into every off season acting like their wad of cash is going to finally land them the big free agent and that's basically never happened in the history of the franchise.

They have no clue how to evaluate players. Their scouting department and talent evaluation are both stuck in the stone age. They keep looking into these shiny bottom feeder players who have no impact on winning but can put up some flashy numbers on the box score. They are supposed to be NBA 3.0 with all this technology and they are evaluating players from the box score you get in the Sunday paper.

I like watching the Celtics because they play the game as a team. Smart is a tough nosed player that plays defense and works hard. He is worth pursuing.
 
I believe Smart conveyed thru his reps that he will not sign an offer sheet with the Kings for any amount, and Kings are trying to save face by saying they aren't interested in him anyway.

That position would seem tolack any real support, whereas the post-mortum of the past two off seasons seems to establish a pattern of baseless stories leaked to the press by agents to enhance playres barginging position while the signings/offers that Vlade does make are generally kept under wraps. All things being equal the best predictor of current or future behavior is past behavior.

The word in Celtics circles yesterday was exactly that - agent leaking info to reporter with less than stellar track record to boost interest. There were conflicting reports as well that he turned down a previous offer of ~48/4 million mid-season and that he is only seeking a "reasonable" offer in that range right now.
 
Fox will get considerably better from deep. His Spurs game last season shows he has it in him.

Smart and Fox to start. Bog at the 3. Hield off the bench.
