As far as I'm concerned, Smart just takes the better wing in any Buddy/Bogdan/Smart wing pairing. I certainly would rather have Smart defending the SF position than 95% of any "real SF's".

Give me Smart over Hood any day of the week. Hood is fine, but nothing special. Smart brings a fire to the game.

I also don't hate the idea of Parker either, but I think Smart would most immediately impact the team.

Smart can guard a SF if he has to though not super long. I would be interested in what he could teach Bagley about defending the wings.
If we are going to overpay Smart make it a massive 1 year deal like the 76ers did with JJ and than get him an a reasonable price next year, I love Smart but I would not give him 15 million + over 2-3 seasons we are better off trading for MKG or Marcus Morris or something like that if that's the asking price.
Most I would go is a Avery Bradley type deal of 25 over 2 years.

ugh I'd be a lot more ok with Smart as our starting SF if Fox and Bagley could shoot. Fox went 1-6 in his lone SL game. Bagley has looked horrific shooting from 3pt land. I think he's had 2 airballs this summer...not promising at all. Giles shooting touch is meh too.

He guarded 1-3 last year at 6'4". Draymond guards 1-5 at 6'7". Height isn't the determining factor.

Bagley, Willie, and Harry should all be good shooters for bigs. Skal should be even better than that. The thing with them is they need to put them in a position to spot shoot, or shoot out of the pick and pop. This squaring up and shooting threes out of the triple threat isn't the answer. I think one of them should develop into that but it will take time.

The Boston Celtics run a system in line with basketball of today where they switch almost everything. Smart gets changed onto PF's at times in their system.

Gotta think about the WC with LeBron(!), Harden/Paul, Curry/Klay//Durant coming off switches. Really no other guy I'd like on a "mismatch" than Smart. Guy is a dog. Horrible stats but a winner. He might shoot 4/12 most nights but in the 4th quarter in crunch time teams need a guy like Smart.
He's also contagious with his intensity. Kings need him. Agree with Jamal above, unless the Kings are still trolling the RFA market then offer him the same as LaVine.

I can't see how he would work with D'Arron Fox back court. The spacing would be horrible.
I guess Vlade doesn't see the value of a proven full size small forward.

That’s a Joerger guy. Always very valuable for the the Grizz 1-3 and guarded the best scorer whether at 6 foot 1 guard or a 6 foot 10 wing.
Marcus Smart can be a Tony Allen with an ocassional streakiness on offense where Tony often failed to finish layups.
Both Smart and Allen have 6 foot 9 wingspans.

So if he is the 3rd Guard, Buddy is the 4th?
That makes him our backup PG, Im ok with that - 15 mil for backup PG yeah sure why not?
Just pay our full cap. Why not? Are we really that cheap that we'll lose an impact player over a few million a year when this contract basically does nothing in terms of our long-term future?
Here's what we know:
-Next summer, we're back to being the ugly step-sister. We'll have a bunch of cap, but only the bottom of the bottom FA's would be willing to sign with us. We won't get a chance to nab a talent like Smart or Parker next year. Not even close.
- I think we have 5 core guys on the team:
Buddy/Bogdan: 2 more years from new contract
Fox/Giles: 3 more years from new contract
Bagley: 4 more years from new contract
So even if magically all 5 guys turn out to be studs who need to be paid 15+mil a year, Smart's contract will be an expiring the year we need to pay fox andGiles.
Lets say Fox, Bogie and Buddy all play 30mpg. That leaves 18mpg available for each position. Smart automatically takes the 18mpg for the backup PG spot. Then give him like 5mpg at SG and SF for a total of 28. JJ still gets time on the court and possibly even gets some stretch 4 minutes here and there.
I'm the first to say that I don't like playing guys out of position but a guy like Smart holds his own out there and is such a bulldog on defense, it's hard to pass him up. If Fox improves like Rozier, the Kings could make a run at some point and even play the two together the way Boston did. Instead of being one of the worst defensive teams, this team could jump to average overnight with Smart and Giles and then possibly up from there depending on if Hield and Fox can develop their defensive games.
I'm sure in the end they'll probably wind up paying the same amount of money to Rodney Hood who is essentially just a heartbeat at the SF spot at this point. Don't be fooled by this guy's points per game production. He hasn't played winning basketball in a few years.

He would play 30 minutes a night and be an impact player. I don’t understand how kings fan don’t see that we have to pay a bit more to get players to want to play in Sac. Talent is hard to find in the FA market. We paid 15 mil a year to Hill who was dreadful, we pay 11 mil a year to Shumpert so we could get rid of hill, we pay 8 mil a year to both koufos and temple who are probably worth the vet minimum. Moral of the story is that we overpay all the time for bad players so why not overpay a little for a good player ?
It's not great, but we have to control what we can get better at. Adding shooting for the sake of adding it doesn't make any sense if we get significantly worse in other aspects (ALA, Rodney Hood, Doug McDermott type signing). Losing out on a player like Smart is stupid just because he can't shoot. Maybe he doesn't start and still easily gets 30 MPG? We need another secondary playmaker and we desperately need a quality wing defender.
And who says we can't go add shooting next off-season? Just a few names:

My point is, shooting is the easiest thing to go find in FA and add to a set core to make them better. I'm fine waiting a year if we can get that core set, which I think Fox/Bogdan/Buddy/Smart/Bagley/Giles is pretty damn good.
