Thomas played well for us last year, and I don't see any reason to try and replace him unless someone significantly better is available. While I haven't seen Calderon play in the last few years, the numbers suggest that he was only marginally better than Thomas last year.
You also have to consider that at 23 Thomas likely hasn't reached his full potential as a play-maker. Calderon, meanwhile, turns 31 this year and will start declining sooner rather than later.

I doubt Calderon would be replacing IT. He'd be a backup and replacing Jimmer's minutes. Personally, I like Calderon but if we're looking at reserve PGs, I'd rather look at FA first. However, I think this team is committed to giving Jimmer those minutes for now.
I think if we were to sign Calderon, he would have to start. Right now, he's better at the PG position than IT is. And thats no disrespect to IT. And I'll admit, that I like IT coming off the bench better than starting. Now that would probably push Jimmer further down the bench, and maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing. It would give him more time to develop with less pressure. Everyone here seems to love Beno, but if you look at his career, it really didn't take off, until he arrived here in sacramento after sitting on the Spurs bench for 3 years.
Nash didn't really arrive until his 5th year in the league. PG's tend to take more time.
Well under the amnesty scenario (which is only a possibility at this point,) we wouldn't be "signing" him, we'd be bidding on him.

I like the idea of Jose as PG. Let he and IT compete for minutes as it should not matter who starts rather who produces. And there is always match ups, IT being the "pest" type like a Nash and Jose more a pure PG with his 9 apg. Then there is Jimmer. If he can become the prolific 3-pt scorer he is capable of then he is a "guard" in the generic sense and would get "spread the offense" minutes and be capable of bringing the ball up.
Calderon would have to spell the end of Jimmer. There is no way you can be a seriosu NBA team trotting out either Jimmer/IT or Jimmer/ Calderon backcourts defensively. It would be a slaughter. Jimmer's best shot at minutes, really from the moment he got drafted for us, was that Reke would be the backcourt mate there to take the tougher defensive matchup.
I don't see what Calderon would provide that IT doesn't. Play defense? Hardly. Don't see the point, other than to surrender more FA $ and trade capital when it could be used elsewhere. Get a top 10 point guard, or get a guard that is a wizened old vet that can teach IT some tricks of the trade if you want to make a deal.
Why not just swap Calderon for Salmons straight-up?There's a high probability Calderon will be amnestied. Why can't we just amnesty Salmons and sign Josè? It would make sense financially too, because let's say we give Calderon $3 million per year, I believe there will be a team out there willing to pick up Salmons, and $3 million is a reasonable price for him. So, basically, we would spend the same amount of money, but we would have a true PG instead of Salmons.
If they amnesty him, I'd think about it.

We don't need Salmons and maybe they need a SG. They can have one of IT and Jimmer too.
We don't need another guard. Salmons played well as a 2nd string PG last year. I'd rather leave our guards alone and if we want to give away people like a fire sale, let's get a SF. I'd focus on our biggest need by position and attitude. I don't think PG is our highest priority and from what I am reading, Calderon doesn''t help our defense. What's the point except shuffling the order and praying it does something?
Calderon has a lot more to offer than does Salmons. A fact of which, unfortunately, I am sure that Toronto is well aware.
