[Game] Game 70: Kings v. 76ers - 3/24/15 - 7:00 pdt 10:00 edt

There are some Kings Fans for whom "efficiency" is the end-all and be-all. Sure, Cousins went for 33/17/3/4/4, but he didn't shoot it well, ipso facto, he had a crappy stat line. Or something.

Efficiency is incredibly important. There's quite a big difference between a player scoring 40 points on 20 shots (amazing game) and a player scoring 40 points on 80 shots (incredibly crappy ball hogging game). These two are differentiated by their efficiency, and if you only look at points you'd say both were great.

The bottom line is that you want to score as many points per possession as possible. And the league average is to score 1.07 points per possession (the Kings are a bit better on the season at 1.08). If you can't score at that level, then somebody else ought to be shooting. Cousins scored 0.92 points per possession tonight. Players who are marginally MORE efficient for this season than Cousins' night tonight include Kendrick Perkins, Austin Rivers, and Josh Smith. I think Cousins deserves a little bit of criticism for his shot selection tonight. It wasn't good.

I saw it more as a few poor selections and a bunch of shots that just didn't fall or were well defended. It's hard to blame DMC when he's quintuple-teamed and has no choice but to take a shot or get the 24-second violation.

Many of the shots Demarcus took were blocked by Noel. Plus, all the shots he took while getting banged up 5vs1 and receiving no calls also adds to those numbers.

Saw the first half and the last 1:20. Maybe I should do that more often. Great win. Good for pumping up our guys. Three wins in a row. Un-heard of in modern Kinghood. Phoenix tomorrow night? That'll be tough.

What's the formula for possessions again?

Possessions= FGA+ 0.44xFTA+ ???

I think its something with turnovers and rebounds, but can't quite remember

Add TOs and that's the standard formula for possessions. For a points per shot calculation I typically don't put in TOs though. And for Cousins tonight I was just plain counting (because I was grading him) so no formula necessary.

And I think that it takes more than inefficiency to be able to credibly say that a player had a "crappy" stat line.

Well, these objections are kind of my point. Cousins was being very well defended tonight. He was consistently double-teamed and often triple teamed, and Noel was in there to clean it up - he got blocked at least four times tonight by my count and he took a lot of difficult shots. Once this pattern has been established, the team should look to find other sources of offense (we do have them) who might be pretty open considering Cousins is being triple-teamed.

Convington is a FA next year if you want to talk about a guy who will fit into the system...great athlete with a great stroke. He's going to be a very solid wingman for years to come.

Tony Wrotten

Not sure what to think of Wroten. Talented, but I'm not sure if his numbers are him being thrown into a #1 option role that he's not suited for, or if he's actually a chucker. But he's extremely turnover prone, not a great FT shooter (although really good at getting to the line), not a good 3pt shooter and not a great playmaker.

I can't see blaming/downgrading Cousins, however, when the rest of the team doesn't understand their role when he's being smothered. He did his part.

Noel's been playing much better as of late. Luc could give Rudy trouble. Isaiah Canaan could always get hot and torch us as he did for the Rockets.

But the Sixers are also starting super-journeyman Ish Smith, are devoting significant minutes to Furkan Aldemir, who may or may not be a real person, and feature 97-year-old Jason Richardson.
I watched the game but didn't participate in the thread during the game. This comment is prophetic.

Wait. What?!?!
Oops, I should've clarified. I meant his FG% lol. Beyond terrible FG%, but it felt like he was super efficient on offense tonight. Anyone who didn't watch the game and just looked at the stats and thought he had a chucking poor offensive game, but it wasn't really that at all today. He did chuck a few unnecessary shots, but he was heavily defended tonight. I personally thought Cuz got the ball way too much. I think at some time, the Kings HAVE to start getting other players involved in the offense when Big Cuz is struggling. It just didn't feel like many players stepped up tonight on offense, or maybe we just kept feeding it to Cuz over and over again? Noel played amazing defense on Cuz.. great player to steal from the Sixers once they draft Towns

It also worth noting, he got quite a few of his own misses, so you could also look at it as if he shot like 8-21 along with 17-19 from the line, but "only" had 33+11+3+4+4 game...

I agree in concept, but the problem last night was that Cuz would get the ball, the defense would collapse all over him, and the other guys in the retro-blue jerseys just stood there like they were waiting for him to levitate out of the crowd. The one thing I hope Coach Karl can get through their heads quickly is that as good as Cousins is, he can be even better if his supporting cast does what they're supposed to do.

I don't have my notes in front of me, but from my recollection, despite his high offensive rebound numbers last night, I don't think he got very many of his own misses. In fact, I would not be surprised if he didn't get any of his own misses. I actually don't remember it happening once.

16 pts, 8 rbs, 2 ast, 1 blk on 7/12 shooting in 20 Minutes for Trob.

#Trobbandwagon
12 points, 5-7 FG, 2-4 FT, 0TO
4 points, 2-5 FG, 1TO
Robinson played two very different halves: promising young forward, who was hustling, taking guys off the dribble and drawing fouls; short PF, who was blocked twice. Only one of them played against an NBA defense.

Shaq went through the exact same mugging....you know what he did? dunked it on everybody that came in his path.

Shaq was 7'1" and 300+ his entire career, with a better vert to boot. As big and strong as Cuz is, there is no comparison. Shaq could physically do whatever he wanted out there, and it was basically impossible to stop him without a weapon of some kind.

Cuz vs. Shaq in the post. I'd pay good money to see that

Taking both in their prime? In the post there would be no contest. Shaq was a much much better post player than Cuz is. Make them start out at the three point/FT line and it's a different ball game.

I guess I'd just be interested in seeing Cuz get bullied in the post. It never happens in today's NBA. Cuz would kill Shaq from the free throw line imo. Too quick.
