BOS/MIN Trade (MERGED)

Looks like a 7 player deal + draft picks went down just saw on TNT.

Seems like the key pieces were

To Bos:

Wallyworld
Candyman

To Min:
Ricky Davis
Mark Blount

Don't have any reference other than TNT.

We better beat Boston w/Ricky Davis & Blount :)

I saw that too, I didn't get to see exactly what though. TWolves just got a hell of a lot better right? They're getting Ricky Davis+ for wally?

Wally, Candy man, go to Boston

Blount, Ricky Davis go to Minny.

those are the main players of the trade

-also an exchange of draft picks

Beat me to it.

Marcus Banks

(updated info on draft picks)

Well I remember a sportswriter saying the Artest trade was holding up all other trades. Looks like the logjam has broken.;)

Basically Boston sheds the Blount salary, while the Wolves shed the Wally salary and decide to hitch their boat to Blount as their center. Kind of a little bit odd from Minnesota just in that they have complained all year that they haven't shot as well as they hoped, and then they trade their best shooter. Oh well, lots of bodies, but kind of a shrug.

This trade does nothing really. The Celts get a 1st rounder too?! Man, I didn't think that the Wolves would have to give up their 1st to dump Wally.

Boston just took on another very bad deal to dump another, but Wally is a very good player.

Paul is as good as gone, boston is building for the future. I am guessing he may go to is chi town or houston.

The are essentially the same players going to a different place.
Davis and Blount are better players; Davis, for one, actually passes the ball.

I'm bothered by this trade for the simple fact that I don't like seeing players that spent their entire careers with one team leave; so far, we've had two such players traded in the span of thirty hours or so. Among active players, the Top 10 list of players who have played their entire careers with the same team now reads like this:

Code:
Kevin Garnett MIN	815	11 Seasons
Kobe Bryant LAL	666	10 Seasons
Allen Iverson PHI	652	10 Seasons
Tim Duncan SAS	627	9 Seasons
Paul Pierce BOS	567	8 Seasons
Dirk Nowitzki DAL	565	8 Seasons
Austin Croshere IND	527	9 Seasons
Shawn Marion PHO	493	7 Seasons
Zydrunas Ilgauskas	CLE	450	9 Seasons
Jeff Foster IND	419	7 Seasons

I have no idea what Boston could possibly want with Wally Szczerbiak. Yeah, Blount had a bad deal, but Wally is making $36 million over the next three years. Now that's a bad deal, even if he is a good player. But it's not like the Celtics are getting cap relief.

Seems like Minny made out best here, even giving up the first rounder.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The struggling Minnesota Timberwolves shook up their roster Thursday night, sending swingman Wally Szczerbiak to the Boston Celtics for guard Ricky Davis in an exchange involving seven players and three draft picks.

Davis, Mark Blount, Marcus Banks, Justin Reed and two conditional second-round draft picks are coming to Minnesota, and in exchange the Celtics are getting Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi and Dwayne Jones and a future first-round draft pick, the teams announced.

The Wolves were in need of a spark after losing their last two games by 20 points or more.

"Through this trade, we've become a much more athletic team," Timberwolves vice president of basketball operations Kevin McHale said in a statement. "With Ricky Davis, we've added one of the more talented shooting guards in the NBA -- both on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Plus, with Davis and Trenton Hassell together on the court, we'll have a great defensive presence at the 2-3 positions."

McHale planned a conference call for reporters Thursday night.

"It was a tough decision to trade Wally," McHale said in the statement. "He has been the ultimate professional and a very good player for us through the years. I wish him nothing but the best of luck with the rest of his NBA career."

The Celtics said they were glad to get Szczerbiak.

"We are ecstatic to acquire a player of Wally Szczerbiak's quality to complement Paul Pierce and our young talent base," said Danny Ainge, the Celtics' executive director of basketball operations. "In Wally we are receiving an All-Star player who is playoff tested and who has been a winner at all levels."

Davis, a 6-foot-7 guard, is the Celtics second leading scorer, averaging 19.7 points per game, and the 7-0 Blount is the team's third-leading scorer at 12.4 points per game.

Banks, a point guard and former first-round draft pick, was made expendable by the development of Delonte West.

The 6-7 Szczerbiak is averaging 20.1 points, second on Minnesota, while the 7-0 Olowokandi, a former first overall draft pick, is averaging 6 points. He had been a big disappointment for the Wolves, who signed him as a free agent in the summer of 2003.

I'll give the edge to the Wolves in this trade. They lose a good shooter in Wally but get back a good scorer and better defender in Ricky Davis. They lost Olowokandi -- that itself improves them by a notch.

But this trade makes no sense if that is the case.Unless they think they are ready to move forward with Wally World as the go to guy.

Well, they give their best shooter for 2 pretty darn good ones. Blount is an excellent shooter for a big man, and Ricky is a very streaky player. He knows how to score in bunches. It makes more sense from Minny's side to me. I see them making a run at Francis.

PG: Francis
SG: Hassel
SF: Ricky Davis
PF: KG
C: Blount

this is a lineup that can light up the score board from all angles. Minny aint done dealing.

Hah! First Peja gets traded and then of course Wally gets dealt. I always considered him a poor mans Peja! In all seriousness Wally is a pretty darn good player in his own right, He played better after Pippi longstockings and Golem left too, but Minni wasn't winning and they have to try to keep Garnett happy. Ricky is playing really well this season and his style should mesh with KG as long as he knows his role. Can't really say who got the better deal.

Wally is a career 50% jumpshooter. 50% for a jumpshooter!

Except for Blount. He is one of the worst rebounding big men in the NBA.

that is what i am getting from must boston forums that this move was made just to give more playing time to the young guys. And i think pierce is gone for some draft picks and expiring contracts. And Minn is not done dealing either, they have four points guards watch for a trade for a flip murray that is what i am hearing from minn forums.

But he is a VERY GOOD shooter. Very athletic as well. In KG and Blount they have two big guys with good touch and range. They will be able to spread the floor very well.

oh sweet, i can actually cheer for wally now ( i love wally, but could never cheer for him since i hate the timberpuppies)
