Alright, we got the 8th pick, options...

I'd imagine Glenn was being sarcastic, probably in reference to Reke? Nonetheless, pretty much all the elite NBA guards came into the NBA with that specific weakness. It's really not uncommon.

I wasn't being sarcastic at all. Perhaps I have lost my ability to judge a basketball player in the last few months.

Feels like way too much for the 1st pick. Essentially 3 top 10 picks for the 1st? Yikes.
In the right draft, the first is worth that and more. #1 is where you get Shaq and Duncan and Hakeem and LeBron.

But I don't think this draft is shaping up to be one of those no brainer HOFer #1 pick type things.

My take as well. Not so much the 3 for 1 as the 3 for 1 in this draft.

Sorry, misunderstanding. I wasn't sure what point you were making. BTW, I will reply to your message tomorrow. Been a little busy the last couple of days. :)

CBS has him rated 12th, 16th and 19th. He is a remarkable athlete at 6'4". He has great court vision and can push the ball extremely fast on the break. He is a high flyer. He is great on defense. He is a poor jump shooter and even has trouble with free throws if I remember right. He would be worth a pick if we didn't need outside shooting. I haven't been checking in here often because I've been in and out of the hospital. Don't even remember sending you a note. I've been preoccupied.

Per @KBergCBS, Kings have made calls to teams ahead of them in order to move up in hopes of drafting Joel Embiid cbsprt.co/1iHv2cu

Interesting...

Well, last year Smart was ranked behind Ben before he decided not to declare (And his draft stock took a hit this year too), so being that he's going as low as 8 i'd be inclined to disagree.

What? Smart was being called a top 3 pick last year, some have even questioned his return to college because it may have lost him 5-6 spots this year. There was even talk of him being the #1 pick originally.

This is from Elfrid Payton's media day interview:

Q: How would you fit in with the Sacramento Kings?

Payton: I think I would do well and come in and help the organization turn around to get in the playoffs. I think it would be a great fit. My strong points are defense and my ability to run the team by giving my teammates shots when they need it. I can get those big time stops when they need it, too.

I really like Payton, but I worry that whatever trade the team does will involve having to give up on getting Payton.

Yes, I agree. But I think we are in a position that we need to compete right now for a playoff spot. We can't wait any longer, because DMC will not be here forever if we don't show him we can be a playoff team in a very short time.
So, I'm ok with giving up some young talent with "potential" for proven players who can help us right now.

I don't really care. It's quite possible it was a friend. Even if it wasn't, who cares. Take him anyway, you'll have him for four years and then he'll be a RFA. Makes no difference. Though if we don't trade up, there's literally no way he makes it to us.

I seriously don't understand why people would want to pass on a player because he possibly likes the lakers. Even if Sarcasm, Who cares? If we draft them, they're ours

I wouldn't pass on him. I just reported a fact that looked curious to me. Anyways, if we don't move up there's no way we can draft him.

I'm only joking about the laker comment of course. (though I don't enjoy hearing the prospects eulogise about the Lakers, naturally)

Always seems the Kings are in the same place on draft day, one pick too late. All reports indicate that the Lakers are very high on Embiid and that it is a good chance he slips that far, I bet he even has a promise from them if he does. I actually have the Celtics taking him one pick earlier on my mock draft, but perhaps they will go in another direction.

This actually makes sense now though why the Kings would want to trade up and are talking to the Celtics, if they do that then they probably can get Embiid. I'm just not sure what we can trade them. Our pick isn't as good, we have no second round picks, we won't trade McLemore to move up two spots, and we can't absorb salary. The only thing I can think of is that we trade an expiring contract for a contract with more years on it at a similar salary.

I've had the odd feeling that Gerald Wallace would once again be floundering on the Kings bench before his career was finished.

Good point, you may actually be exactly right on that one and what if Embiid doesn't fall? Is it worth taking a Gerald Wallace contract in order to get Embiid or perhaps Vonleh?

Top 3 I think will be Wiggins, Parker, and Exum, after that is where the questions come in. Vonleh probably goes either #4 or #5 so that leaves one more spot before the Celtics pick we would trade for. My guess is that it's Marcus Smart going #4, but it could easily be Embiid too.

Vonleh is the one guy that has a chance of falling to us that I really don't want. Just not getting a good vibe from him... nothing about his game gets me really excited.

Embiid is huge boom or bust. Swing for the fences type of pick for sure... probably gonna leave whatever team drafts him constantly wanting more as I don't think he's gonna stay healthy. Who knows though... just my best guess.

So it's Goron/Randle/or Smart for me. Smart is the guy I'm really hoping for but I'd be excited with either of those three. I'd take them Smart/Gordon/Randle.

I don't think this draft is the next great draft that everyone was predicting at the beginning of the year, a lot of depth, but no definite stars or even definite quality players, there are just too many questions. That's why I've been an advocate of trading down, I think getting multiple picks in the first and second rounds can all potentially turn out to be quality players.

I like Vonleh because if he bulks up some I see some Serge Ibaka in him. He is underrated defensively, rebounds well, blocks shots, and can consistently hit the mid-range jumper and can even extend it to 3-point range. The thing I don't like is the SF talk and that he seems to want to be a great 3-point shooter, that should be a bonus, but not a main part of his game.

I'm not a fan of Gordon, Randle, or Smart. Gordon is undersized, a poor rebounder for his athleticism, and has no offensive game. Randle is undersized and doesn't have the athleticism to make up for it. Smart can't shoot well, makes things worse by taking too many poor shots, and is way overrated in his ability to create for his teammates.

Now if you could get these guys later in the draft it would be worth it. Gordon is very strong defensively, high basketball IQ, and if he could learn to use his amazing athleticism better he has star potential. Randle could end up being like Zach Randolph if everything goes well. I think Smart will always be somewhat productive, but until his shot gets better and he learns when it is better to shoot and when it is better to pass he will always be limited. However if he does learn these things he can be a star, kind of sounds like someone else we used to know.

Good, I'm hoping we keep it... or trade back a couple of spots if Smart/Gordon are gone.

We really don't need another kid. Highly risky. Kid fails, its another losing season. At the end of which convincing Gay or any other respectable free agent to stay becomes dicey. After which convinving DeMarcus he wants to stay becomes dicey. Kid works out its all grand. But it would be kind to call that a 50/50 shot, while established players are known entities. We are asset poor. That #8 is our best asset. It has to bear serious fruit if a 28 win team is going to become a 40+win team in the West. As we speak West teams all over are once again loading up. Dallas got Chandler back, the Nuggets Afflalo for free, New Orleans freed Asik. These are all teams we have to leap, and they are trying to get better with targeted vet acquisitions.
