Al Thornton???

The Bee has often times been right on their draft day mock. The reports were this guy was unimpressive with the Kings in his workout with Corey Brewer...could that be a smokescreen to not build up much hype for the Kid? He's atheltic, can run and shoot and he's 6'7 ALL Petrie like attributes. I think I'd prefer Julian Wright to Al Thornton personally, but we'll see, the guy is already 2 years older than LeBron.

I'm cool with Thornton as our pick, just not at #10. If we picked him up at #12 while picking up an additional pick from the Sixers, i'd be cool with that.

While Thornton is far from the top player on my list, I wouldn't be completely devastated if we drafted him. I'd prefer him to Hawes. He's an excellent scorer, is fairly NBA ready and is very athletic. So he can play SF next to Kev. But I really can't see GP taking him even though he is GPs typical draftee! He actually looked pretty good in the workouts for Boston against Corey Brewer, looked very smooth and had good potential and recieved good praise (workout can be seen on espn).

Ultimately I just can't see us drafting a 23 year old small forward, and particularly not if Joakim Noah is on the board, as Cooper does in his mock.

What I learned from the Bee today -- Petrie loves Noah (Amick) but would pass him up for Al Thornton (Cooper). One of these things is not like the other.

Of course, I think I might rather have Thornton than J. Wright or Green -- at least he's shown he's an elite athlete and can score. There are just too many question marks around Wright and Green for my taste.

I really hope we don't take Thornton he is the one player in our projected range that I am really really down on. I want absolutely no part of anyone who is a 5th year senior. He is too old and already as developed as he is going to get. He has a much lower ceiling then pretty much any other lottery pick. I will be seriously pissed off if we take him.

I wouldn't mind Thornton at all, I just don't want him at #10(same way I feel about Yi). If we were to trade down with the sixers or pistons to get 12/21 or 15/27 or something like that, then I am cool with Thornton...but at 10 I will be upset...there is a distinct break at 11 or 12 with a steep talent drop off in my opinion.

Yeah I definitely agree with you there, if we do drop to around 15 or so I wouldn't be too upset with getting Thornton, but at 10 no way.

The catch here guys, if you read carefully is "Thornton to REPLACE Artest", so its obvious that Artest would be gone in some manner, most likely a draft pick thats higher or slighly lower than 10. Im sure that Petrie has Thornton as the 2nd player he would draft in the case the Kings end up with 2 of the top 15 or 16 picks. My belief would be Noah or Yi as the other.

Question to anyone here: If Petrie is not going to NY to be in the draft, and will be at Arco with the fans, if there was some deal he was planning on, wouldn't he be in NY? This smells like nothing is going to happen and itll be just #10 for us. Anyone?

As much as people want to hate on Noah, I dont care. I would much rather have Noah over Thornton. Where are Garcia and Salmons going to play if we draft our 10th SF? Why would we draft such a redundant position other than the fact that Petrie always inexplicably does. Just makes no sense.

At least if we get Noah, he can fill in at PF and actually get more than 2 minutes of playing time a game which is exactly what Thornton would get, just like when we had gerald wallace.

I don't think of Thornton as purely a SF, I think he could play PF some of the time, depending on coaching styles and matchup. He is an inch and a half shorter than Justin, but (as with Justin) he's not all about how far off the ground his head is when he's standing there. To put it another way:

Standing reach + max vertical leap
Hawes: 139"
Horford: 142.5"
Noah: 143.5"
BWright: 143.5"
Thornton: 145.5"

He is one of very few cases where tweener height doesn't bother me all that much.

Okay, what you're forgetting is that BOTH Sam Amick and Scott Howard-Cooper are trying to read something into tea leaves or smoke patterns. Petrie hasn't said anything about any particular players. Both of those writers, AND Voisin, are pretty much using the million monkeys/million typewriters approach. And I think they're listening to the projections and boosting the players they think have the best chance of being picked by the Kings because that shores up their credibility.

NO ONE knows what Geoff Petrie is going to do.

Umm...what? You don't need to shake someone's hand to make a deal. He just picks up a telephone and dials. I really don't understand your question.

Oh C'mon, we all know Petrie is going for the all SF team:

PG: Salmons
OG: Kevin
SF: Garcia
PF: Thornton
C: Reef

Wouldn't that be something (aweful)...
Seriosuly, it'd be a matchup nightmare (For Us)...

I'd actually like to see this team start a game. It'd be double the fun vs. the Spurs or the Rockets. (Rebounds? We don't need no stinkin' rebounds!) It's a real shame that Don Nelson wasn't available this offseason.

Edit: If the Kings draft Yi Jianlan I will eat my hat (and learn how to spell Jianlan). This is really quite convenient because I don't own any hats.

Last I know, the Draft has what they call "War Rooms", where they make last minute decisions, including trades.

Ok, you clearly misunderstand the term. Each team has their OWN war room full of their own Execs, Scouts, Coaches, etc. There is not some big War Room in NYC where all the GMs get together and argue and make deals.

I know that. Thats not the point. The point is, is that when you are close to the action vying to be the first team to trade, you have to be present, specially during a lottery pick. Clearly OUR warroom will be empty, unless wiseman Reynolds will be representing...GULP!

Oh, boy.

The Kings War Room is in SACRAMENTO just like every other team's war room is in their city. There is no "action" to be close to. We can keep going round and round in circles on this, or you can take me at my word - you misunderstand. No GM goes to NYC on draft day to be close to the action. They sit in their team offices and make phone calls. The fact that Geoff is in Sacramento is a GOOD sign and does not mean a trade WON'T go down. Obviously, a trade might not go down. But it won't be because Geoff is not in NYC.

How many times do you have to say "best player available" before people get it? I think Thornton is one of the 10 best players in the draft. If the other 9 are drafted before us, I'll be happy with Thornton.

At 23 he still doesn't have a great shot, his ball handling is average at best, doesn't have much of a bball IQ, can't create for others, and below average man D. I think his athleticism and length will make him a decent rebounder and help defender, he could be a good scorer around 16-20 but it won't be an impactful 16-20.

Assuming guys like Yi and Noah are off the board. Thornton would be the best player available, and I'd have no problem with us taking him. I think he is better than Julian Wright, in the sense that 2-3 yrs from now, you hope Wright can do the things that Al Thornton can do now. It's a judgement call between Thornton and Brewer, basically offense vs. defense.

I'd rather have talented SF like Thornton/Wright than high-risk-for-bust big men like Jason Smith or Josh McRoberts.

The #10 is a long shot to land us a talented big guy anyway. Curiously, kingsdraft.com's mock also has us picking Thornton, for the last two weeks now.

No prob, just remembered how there were team officials present for media/pictures when they picked in the lottery. Im sure thats not always the case.
