Would rule change alter your #1 pick?

Anyone else catch the tidbit (can't remember from where) where Stern and the rules competition committee are considering a rule change that streamlines more with FIBA as FiBA is trying to stremline more with NBA rules. FIBA is looking at moving the 3 point line back and making a square key from the trapezoidal. One rule the NBA is looking at forgoing is once the ball hits the rim from a shot that the defender would then be able to swat it away without it being goal tending.

IF that rule were to go into effect, I would think the value of a Hasheem Thabeet would SKY ROCKET, it'd HAVE to.

Let's assume that rule does in deed go into effect. Does that change your draft strategy this June with the #1 pick?

Personally for me, it does. As I'd think Thabeet becomes a much more viable option with an accentuated strength in the rules to fit his skillset.

Yep. I read this too. He will be advocating for the change in the offseason. My understanding is he has pushed for this before, but rather passively. He will be pushing much more strongly this year.

Here's some info:

The committee also debated whether it should change the goaltending rule to make it consistent with FIBA’s rule for international competition, in which the ball is in play and may be swatted, rebounded, or dunked once it touches the rim. In the NBA, players cannot touch the ball until it comes off the rim on its own. The matter was discussed, with some members favoring a change because it would make for exciting play and eliminate extremely difficult basket interference calls for officials. But there was no consensus, as committee members opposing it worried that it would be too drastic a change and might reduce scoring.
“It just didn’t seem like something that people were real enthusiastic about changing since the consensus in the entire room was that the game looks pretty good right now,” Litvin said.
Jerry Colangelo, managing director of gold medal-winning USA Basketball, was in favor of adopting FIBA’s goaltending and basket interference rules because NBA players competing internationally wouldn’t have to adjust to the vastly different rule on a reaction play that happens quickly in games.
“The FIBA rule, the live ball on the rim, that’s an exciting play,” said Colangelo, a former head of the rules and competition committee. “And I think it would be a great addition to the NBA.”

So unless you hit all net, your shot can be swatted off the rim?...

What is this spacejam?!..

yeah, good idea.

That would eliminate offensive goaltending.

No, I don't think it changes your draft pick. It's not like bigs dominate in euro play because of the rule.

It means you need better shooters, just what petrie likes. :p

NBA bigs are too big and too atheltic for a rule like that, although meeting FIBA halfway I think is a good idea to bring the sport back under one umbrella.

And yea, I'm already on the Thabeeet bandwagon, but this would jsut add something else. He could practically stand flatfoot and swat them away off the rim.

He could proactively stand flatfoot and swat them away off the rim.

Reminds me of this.

He's available for a 10 day.

Well our existing bigs won't benefit cos they can't jump for nuts
Whatever, I can't believe how many times I've seen Hawes commit offensive goaltending following a missed shot. I think this would help a LOT for a player like Spence and Thompson who are both very reactive to the ball coming off the rim and both hustle.

I like the idea honestly, and the rule change seems to fit perfectly with the skillset of Thabeet. Being the most biggest AND most athletic player in the NBA would be a huge benefit for a rule like this on both offense and defense.

WITH the rule change, I'd consider Thabeet with our 1-4 pick...without it I seem him as a 5-15 range guy. Just my opinion.

..... 'course, in the NBA you have to have the bigger body to get closer to the rim to dunk or swat. Too many times Hawes gets blocked out. JT on the other hand would benefit as he has much more a nose for the ball and basket. Thabeet should benefit as well but how good is he at blocking out? Even at 7-3 you have to bang away some really strong "bigs" in the west: Bynum, Amare, Prizbilla, Shaq, even Dampier. I vote for Thabeet.

Hawes is 20 years old...he's still a boy in terms of his body's physical maturation. He'll bulk out naturally and be better at boxing out as that happens. Theres a huge difference between a 20 year old and a 22-23 year old male physically.

It definitely would give Thabeet more value. But what the NBA giveth, the NBA can taketh anytime they want. Therefore, it might give Thabeet 5% more value in my book, but not more.

dwight would average at least 5bpg if that rule is implied... pretty much shooting percentage goes down...

the only way you can score is

all net... or you dunk it..

next thing you know theyll be allowing to block bank shots... duncan better retire before that rule is implemented
